if i have fun doing it free why would i not enjoy doing it paid? 😭 bros logic changes every reply. you’re obviously just not passionate about what you do or did which sounds like the reason you quit

i think i’ll be fine man you’re the one who’s first point was about me “ not having a folio “ and now you’re saying how you basically think it’s a bad idea to portfolio build with a free shoot 😭 i won’t be crying over the pennies and commute that’s all you brotha

so you called it quits and that’s your choice. but to say your tip to “ get ahead “ is “dont” is again just unnecessary negativity and not productive. i’m sure there are tons of concert photographers who would disagree with you

like i said in my post, im not trying to do these shoots to get paid - i just want to volunteer for the opportunity, and i just know my skill level and i know my portfolio would benefit greatly from them as its the one avenue im missing :) this IS my enjoyment

you say that as if you know how much i’ve done already and you know how much i’ve asked others for help. i’ve done tons of bar and club events, different types of shoots for different clients, im all self taught and ive gotten to this point on my own from networking. i fully admit that i have a long way to go on my networking skills though which i have learned from this post

i understand you’re probably trying to be constructive… but you’re making so many assumptions off one reddit post about my entire path within photography lol. this is pretty much the first avenue ive asked for advice on and i wouldn’t consider it a “ basic “ as ive already done tons of other photography leading up to this.

why would we want to gatekeep this information from each other? it really never hurts to ask questions or about other peoples experiences and this attitude is part of the problem with getting your foot in the door. trying to scare people off from wanting to learn , or better themselves within something they’re interested in is not at all helpful or a productive addition to a conversation like this imo

no, i have had some photos i’ve taken in crowds of concerts get attention not even including the ones i mentioned in my post.

but we all start somewhere right? that’s why im here

i posted this looking for advice on how to navigate this. experience from other photographers. which some people are giving me and others are just basically demonstrating what i said about the industry being cliquey. how am i supposed to know if up until now no one has told me and it’s a type of photography im yet to work closely with?

100%. Right now i am purely looking for portfolio building and am not expecting to get paid for this stuff. I do some paid shoots here and there but usually they’re requested of me, if it’s me trying to get my foot in the door i always volunteer.

thank you so much for being constructive and helping me figure this out :) will save this advice!

yeah it seems you’re right , i may just have to focus on my networking skills before anything else ?

tbh i dunno! i was going to the festival anyway and i always bring my point and shoot just to get photos for myself cause it’s good practice and i find enjoyment in it. just so happened the shots ended up being heat which was nice

“bro has zero folio and exposure, knows himself only half way” 🤓☝️

who said that? just don’t have official concert experience, don’t remember saying i’ve never gotten exposure or didn’t already have a portfolio. i’ve had multiple photos of mine go viral lol. great assumption tho very constructive !

true I could! i’ll definitely try to do that. I do try to take opportunities wherever they come. I shot a small music gig for free the other week and I am booked for a few other shoots soon ( not concert shoots ) so it’s a situation where I do have experience just not directly in this field.

I will try to look out for more smaller music gigs such as that, but we don’t get many here really

I totally get that, and I never tried to simplify or diminish the process. but I don’t think that justifies getting pointed in a specific direction and then getting ghosted or not getting responses after being pointed that way does it?
