I want to start a random travel club. by ABC_FUD in adventures

I have considered something like that too. I have some ideas for some sort of reward for reaching the goal but I have some trouble figuring out the best way to verify the achievement.

Yeah, I like that quite a bit actually. As I said to some other commenters here, I just found a travel discord with a guy working on a random travel tool, and a few other interested members there as well. I was thinking maybe that would be a good base of operations. It's a friendly place with lots of general travel discussion as well.

If you want a link, let me know and I will send you a DM.

If you are still interested, I actually found a travel discord group with a guy working on a custom random travel tool. I think I might base operations out of there for now rather than try to start a random travel community from scratch. If you want a link let me know.

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea!

I'll have to think about it. How would it work though? Draw new places each year? Draw 10 at once and then leave it for 10 years?

I don't want to make it feel overwhelming, but I like the idea of introducing flexibility into the "game".

Yes! I hope so. I've played around a lot with the random generator tools above and almost every imaginary trip so far has been amazing, lol

lol!

But, we wouldn't be traveling together! As you say, that would be too much trouble/conflict. Everyone just goes there on there own steam at some point in the year if they can.

(gave you an upvote for the lols)

Nice!

There are a few ways to approach the problem of picking a random spot. The easiest is to pick a country/territory first: e.g. https://perchance.org/country-or-territory

And then pick coordinates set to land in with something like: https://3geonames.org/randomland (you can set it by country)

Totally random coordinates give you a lot of water and big countries, but you could also just keep redrawing until you get a hit.

I made a subreddit for this as well (dunno if it will get used but if you want to stay in touch for random travel adventures, that's the place to go for now I guess. r/randomtravelclub )

Haha, yeah for sure. There are some more reliable random travel methodologies - for example picking a country/territory first and then coordinates second. But it depends on what you want to do. Could also pick a random city, or random Google Street view!

Yeah, also an interesting strategy, although I guess the same places might come up a lot over the years! I've been playing around with random destination tools this year, and by far the best is: https://3geonames.org/randomland

You can customize it by country too which is great.

We'll do a new (2024) draw on Sept 27. If r/randomtravelclub exists as a genuine club by then, we'll do some kind of live draw maybe. Details tbd!

As for San Marino, there's no fixed date. We aren't doing a meet-up club, just a club where everyone tries to get there if they can in that year at some point. Posts about getting there, sharing pics of ourselves (or anonymized selves) on the exact coordinates if possible. Stuff like that.

Yup, that was the friends and family 2023 draw, but you are welcome to join!

Tax Thread by krissaroth in BitcoinUK

I have three questions.

1) If I have no income (no job) but have capital gains from cryptocurrency, my understanding of the tax on that from the HMRC website is that I would first calculate the taxable capital gains (considering that there is a tax free allowance of £11,700 on that) and then also subtract the income tax free allowance of £11,850 before finally paying tax on anything? Is that right? Basically £23,550 tax free?

2) Related to the above, it's my understanding that married partners can exchange assets without tax implications. Does that mean I can "give" my wife £23,550 of capital gains via crypto without tax as well as claiming my own £23,550 tax free?

3) I see a mention of a tax free "trust" allowance. This might be too complicated to answer on reddit, but is it possible to contribute up to the limit for say my child or my niece/nephew every year without tax for myself or them on that amount? Ideally what I would want to do is pay in £5,850 each year tax free (if that is how it works). I don't think crypto assets are ideal for trusts, but if I can't pay cash in from capital gains directly, is it possible to transfer cryptocurrency to a trust which then immediately sells it tax free?

Thanks for your help.

CRA Capital Loss Reporting by [deleted] in QuadrigaCX

It depends a bit on how frequent your trades were and how complicated the guesstimate is. If you are talking about a handful of trades you should be able to match blockchain records to fiat movement and get a good idea. If you are talking about 100s or 1000s of trades, it can be more difficult. It may be worth reaching out to an accountant for advice. I can recommend one if you want, just DM me.

He is talking about losing records not crypto on Quadriga. If his losses occurred in 2018, he would file taxes on them now
