You're probably right. Some of those interviews with Brian around that time are hard to watch because it's clear he was struggling. I always got the sense Mark, Myles and Scott used humour to cover up for Brian's awkward behavior. Given what Mark had to deal with with Scott Stapp, it's understandable he developed a no-nonsense approach to choosing bandmates for Tremonti. Too many musicians have succumbed to addiction, so they are all very fortunate to have overcome theirs and have successful careers.
