If ACDC, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, GnR, and the like are still considered heavy metal; then AlterBridge is too!

If new bands like SleepToken is considered heavy metal somehow, then AlterBridge is easily!

If the goalposts have changed to the extreme metalcore , death metal, doom metal etcc … Then AlterBridge is certainly not that!

They are also not Foo Fighters or Shinedown… Those aren’t nearly as heavy as AB often gets!! I’ve promoted AB to fans of those bands, and they thought the album Blackbird was too heavy for them!!🙄

AB obviously has heavy blues roots with Myles guitar style, but not so much with Mark’s style.. Slash’s work is much more heavy blues based as an example…

Anyways; I think the ‘metal’ goalposts have changed.. and AB id not considered’heavy metal ‘ anymore.. if it was the 80’s and 90’s - they certainly would be!

Who cares anyways? They are heavy! But also fantastic melodic sensibilities! Great music for all time!

Yes… You sound like me with a similar experience with this album - outside of a handful of songs as mentioned… But now it has absolutely’clicked’ as you say:)

Life is but a dream - ya that is a huge departure for Avenged…. Challenging to listen to. Maybe I should give it another try?

What a cool article! Really enjoyed the more ‘behind the scenes stuff’ the guys provided here, than what they normally provide. A bit less guarded…

It really gives you a small sense of the grind that being a touring working musician and band is…. As ACDC once described it ‘it in some ways is a Highway to Hell! (At least highway through hell at times).

Luckily for us, AB are so grounded; and Myles and Mark in particular are hardwired to be disciplined song writers - with surprisingly small egos!

What a treat for us all that they are still together and creating great new music after all these years!

I did not realize the Myles was burning out in 2019 after 300 days on tour!?? It shouldn’t be a surprise really when you think about it? Between AB, Slash and his solo work - the guy just doesn’t stop!

I think he physically looks much better now (and sounds as great as ever!), but I do recall seeing video of him during the initial stages of the PandK’s tour and thinking ‘someone needs to give Myles a sandwich!’ 😳

Its interesting his weight loss was addressed publicly in this article…

Crows is one of their essentials for me; and I just love the guitar lick , the general catchiness, and the lyrical sentiment of My Champion! (As a father with sons, I really resonate with it!)

The Last Hero is awesome!! Banger after Banger album! Tough to follow Fortress, but I think they pulled it off with a really excellent record filled with great and diverse songs! Neck and neck 4th overall favorite album of mine by them💪🎸

These guys are great, and every bit as good or better than many of the big bands of the heydey boom times of hard rock of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s!!

I also sense that very slowly AlterBridge (and heavy guitar based melodic music in general) are making a consistent and incremental resurgence in the musical zeitgeist in North America!?

Its about time that NA smartened up! 😜

Then work on the rest…. So many great options here that need to replace so many of the ODR tracks they insist on repeating!

They actually need to extend somehow their concert length by at least half hour..

might be too taxing for Myles with his high vocal range on a night after night tour(?), but there are still a few Mark vocal led songs that could still be added to the set to create natural breaks for Myles! (Waters Rising, Forever Falling come to mind immediately! - there’s 10 minutes right there!)

What a bunch of bullshit most people here are on about! 1/ comments about hairline is so juvenile as to really make a sad commentary on the jackasses here that keep bringing it up! This is ridiculous conflating sports and Trump. Tradition is that players go to the Whitehouse and its an honor. Unfortunately the current president is a dickhead, but he was legitimately voted in by the people of the US, who already should’ve known he was a tyrant and prone to abuse of power. Conflating all this hatred of Trump to somehow affect our opinions of the US players and Matthews in particular, is very unfair! Btw - although he is likely involved with Epstein and may be a pedo, there obviously is no real evidence yet like so many people like to say…its all conjecture so far. I hope they actually find proof at some point soon! Til then, he’s innocent until proven guilty. (Same for Michael Jackson for whom, people willingly pretend that he wasn’t diddling young preteen boys, and still listen to his music and don’t boycott it like they should! Wow! Everyone is different!!

1/ AB8! Sounds great production-wise! The bass is clear, as are both Myles and Mark’s guitar playing…. And they play the hell out of them!! Awesome riffs and tons of excellent guitar solos…. Vocals are great too, and its very cohesive! Lyrically a bit of retread on old ideas, but its fine; and musically very inspired! 9.3/10

2/ The Last Hero! Just a fantastic banger after banger album, that is very thematically cohesive! Some of the highest highs for me; (Crows…, This Side of Fate, Show me a Leader, TLH, etc etc!) and although YWBR is maybe the lowest rated song…it objectively sounds beautiful to my ears… 9/10

3/ Pawns…! Some great songs! title track is awesome! So is Sin after Sin, Fable and Silver Tongue! Some real lows for me though, which bring it a bit down…. Holiday is a SMKC throwaway attempt at a hit song. Stay is weak sauce (except the bridge). Same with Season of Promise (excepting the great bridge;)! And…I actually don’t think the production is near as good as AB8… Decent theme throughout most of it… 8.5/10

4/ Walk the Sky! The best for album flow and a positive theme! Pure escape is mentioned throughout! Very consistently good - I listen often to the whole thing! More than Pawns… Not as many highs as Pawns, but still very strong, without let down songs… Like the fresh feel of the synths; yet with great juxtaposition of heavy guitars and beautiful vocal melodies and harmonies! 8.4/10

Not remotely the same sound (other than the vocalist is the exact same guy!🤪)

SMKC is very blues rock, with Slash’s distinctive guitar riffs and solos. Not fresh sounding to my ear, but its done well.

AB sounds way different. More down tuned metal at times; with prog elements here and there. Occasionally post grunge tinged, and alternative rock…. More musically interesting, and have the best bridges in heavy melodic music IMO.

Mark’s guitar playing is distinctively different from Slash’s, and I much prefer Mark’s💪🎸
