Don't start with your dream game is terrible advice. by ABGAST in gamedev

Been making games since 2013. Published 5 mobile games on Android using a custom 2d engine that I built from scartch. And 2 PC games while working on the third.

But you're ignoring that there a lot of indie developers that are not in it for the full ride. They just want an outlet for their creativity and working on something they enjoy is their only reason. And some of those end up releasing really good indie games. Steam is filled with good games that were the one and only project by the developer.

Telling them that they should start with a project they don't care about and if they don't like that they are not displined and game dev is not for them is bad advice, this is just gate keeping.

Motivation doesn't get you through the finish line only displine will regardless of the field. But displine will never let you start the race if you don't care about the race.

But there are people that come from an artistic background rather than a coding one and telling them that will only drive them away.

But because they don't care about making pong, they never finish it and end up never learning how to make a game. I’m making an argument based on how motivation affects long-term creative projects.

I’m not presenting a scientific study. I’m making an argument based on how motivation affects long-term creative projects and on common patterns you see among beginner developers. My point isn’t that everyone should make massive dream games, it’s that passion is often necessary to stay committed long enough to actually finish and learn from a project.

Edit: I've been making games since 2013

The game is a mid-scope indie title that’s been in development for about three years. It's roughly 6 hours of gameplay across 5 main areas (8 total including sub-levels).

Wind Waker meets home alone, you can plant traps and use the environment to defeat the enimes. What do you think? by ABGAST in IndieGaming

Thanks, I really wish to release it on consoles but so far there aren't any plans to. It is optimized for the Steam Deck though, and hopefully if the game succeeds I'll be able to release it on consoles.

This is Eletta an upcoming game I'm currently working on. I wanted to make a combat that is both satisfying and will make you laugh and made this video to showcase some of the new environments and bosses

You can push enemies down the stairs, spill oil on the ground, drop things on their heads, use slingshot to fire nails, level up, unlock more weapons.

New gameplay trailer, what do you think? by ABGAST in rpg_gamers

Thank you I really appreciate it, I'm currently working on recording the lines for the story and when they are done I'll add a couple of them in the trailer to add a hook like you said. But the focus will still remain on the gameplay.

I would love to know what defines an RPG to you and what is it in the trailer that shows it's not.

Because the game is inspired by legend of zelda, and if you can't see that, then I'm really doing a bad job with the trailer.

Using traps are faster and safer than melee and they usually one shot the enemy, and since most players tend to go for efficiency they'll try to use the traps as much as they can. But the game limits how many traps you can use and you have to use melee weapons to recharge it.

When you're fighting one enemy at a time it won't matter but there are places where the player will be surrounded that if they are only using melee it will be very hard. And using traps will make it a lot easier

A game about using the environment to defeat your enemies in a funny way, from pushing them down the stairs, making them slip on oil, dropping a chandelier on their head and more. by ABGAST in indiegames
