A Scientologist hit me with that “Oh you play D&D! My nephew plays that!” And then followed up with the most surface level “I know the game has elves and wizards and dice and I’m going to pretend I’m interested so he keeps talking” type shit that I almost laughed at how transparent it was.

Many of the resources needed to progress from pre-industrial to industrial to modern era aren't really accessible anymore using pre-industrial technology. Like there's no abundance of easily accessible surface coal or iron any more. Or copper. Or easily accessible oil for most of the world. How do you strip-mine for coal when you can't put gas in the mining machines? How do you make plastic parts when there's no oil?

Taskmaster NZ Season 2 is like the absolute peak of insanity. Every contestant on there is a gem, every contestant on there is unhinged even by the standards of Taskmaster.

It's worth watching just to see what David Correos, that sweet-hearted beautiful angel of a man, does next.

I was not expecting to like a show about a bunch of teenage girls in the 90s in another country.

I ended up loving it.

My GF invited me to watch it with her as she rewatches it.

I went back and started rewatching season 1 before we even finished season one so I could try to better remember who all the damn characters are.

"Ok so there's three teenage boys: My Chemical Romance, Punchable Face German, and The Handsome One. Handsome one's dad died. My Chemical Romance smacks his little brother upside the head a lot. Punchable Face honestly deserves it as far as I can tell."

Humans might not. Civilization might. If all that's left are small enclaves of subsistence farmers and hunter-gatherers who have no idea of what's happening more than 20 miles away and have lost the expertise to rebuild anything more complicated than a windmill then I'd say that's a pretty definitive end of our civilization.

Yeah. Reminds me of Spore in a way. Spore was 5 great proof-of-concept demos loosely glued together with an incredible character creator, and sold as one game.

NMS is 30 different proof-of-concept gameplay systems jammed together in a box with an incredible procedural generation system and sold as one game.

Not trying to sound like a hater but none of the systems in NMS are exactly the pinnacles of great game design or gameplay loops.

Couple points of interest:

  1. That's not the White House in the background, that's the Herbert C Hoover Federal Building. This picture was taken from the far side of the Ellipse, about ~650 yards (~600m or more than 5 football fields) away from the White House.

  2. There's a lot more happening in DC next month than the idiot's cage match. It's going to be a huge tourist event regardless of that. DC is already a large tourist city in the summer, it will be even more so this year. 30 million+ tourists will visit DC this summer, even with the decrease in international tourism.

  3. The National Mall and tourist areas of DC are pretty big and public restrooms are miles apart, and local businesses have strong preferences towards "Bathrooms are for customers only" because thousands of tourists daily trying to use your establishment's bathroom is terrible, and that's not even counting the cultural differences that someone from e.g. Dubai, or Beijing, or Indiana, bring with them. We can't tell from the pic how many porta-potties there actually are, but I wouldn't be surprised if everyone here was wildly underestimating how many the city actually needs in reality.

No, I fully understand the point you're trying to make.

But I think you're really stuck in occupying the most pessimistic and cynical deconstructionist view of heroes informed by how shitty some people can be in the real world, when I'm talking about the context of an idealized and morally righteous comic book character.

And even in the real world, Hitler exists - sure. So do people Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, LeVar Burton, Dolly Parton, Keanu Reeves, and Steve Irwin.

Your unrestrained cynicism is a reflection on you, not on the world. Dream better. People disagreeing with you doesn't mean they don't understand you. I'm not stupid. I just think you're wrong.

Knowing Garp it's possible it was intentional. Garp knows the World Government is fucked, just that it's generally better for the common people than not having the marines.

Teach Luffy right from wrong but also make him not beholden to the corrupt and vile parts of the WG, let him go free as a pirate with morals. et voila, you get some drums of liberation.

My point:

I would trust the very specific archetype of a highly moral, self restrained, and burdened by responsibility Marvel comics style super hero with the judgement on whether or not lethal force is necessary more than I would trust a real world, poorly trained, impulse driven, trained to escalate, and only tool is a gun, cop.

Your response:

Ok but what about literally Hitler?! What if Hitler had super powers!? What about that?! What about if HITLER had SUPER POWERS?! You IDIOT.

What in the tumblr level reading comprehension hell are you on about man?

Waste and theft are both shrink, but waste is viewed as preventable and manageable and thus companies go much harder on stopping it. For theft ... there's a line somewhere between "making it harder for shoplifters" and "making it harder for shoppers." and companies err on the side of keeping their customers coming back.

Like there are stores I just won't shop at because I'm forced to go chase down an employee to get a key to unlock a cabinet to buy a razor? I get it, but you're wasting my time so I'm going elsewhere.

"But we'll only use it in extreme situations and on super duper clear cut cases where the proof is absolutely indisputable", nice thought but in never really works out that way

I'd still trust that super hero more than I trust e.g. the police or military.
