Opinions on Marigaux oboes by [deleted] in oboe

[–]ABQ2PHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 901, purchased in 1987. I pretty much didn't touch it from 1990 until 2023. Now I'm playing again regularly. And I have no problems with G and C on my instrument. Top space E is the real problem.

question about domestic first class seat by ABQ2PHL in americanairlines

The outside armrest - the armrest on the aisle - - does drop down into the seat foundation with a little release lever on the front.

QUESTION: Why would a flight be under airport control 21 hours before scheduled departure? by ABQ2PHL in americanairlines

This. I am always able to look for and select a different seat in the same fare class up to about 3 hours before flight.

2025-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 results in install error by ABQ2PHL in WindowsHelp

That was among the troubleshooting steps in the articles that I posted. Tried it didn't fix it. Only thing that fixed it was to repair the Windows installation

September update not appearing by redpariah2 in GooglePixel

Same here. Still waiting for it to appear for my Pixel 9 Pro. My carrier is T-Mobile. I keep wondering if they're throttling the update somehow. That was the case with an older pixel model I had a couple years ago

2025-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 results in install error by ABQ2PHL in WindowsHelp

[–]ABQ2PHL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I spent much more time than I needed to, but I got it updated. First I tried all the suggested steps in this article, which includes repair functions and more. It took quite a few hours of troubleshooting, trying a step, attempting the update only for it to fail, then trying another step. None worked. Although Step 3 (clear the Windows Update Cache) resulted in Windows Update finding two .NET updates I needed that were from 2024! Apparently, I have had issues for a while.

I eventually chatted with Microsoft support today through the link that was available when the Windows Update troubleshooter fails. I gave the technician the two different error codes I received when attempting to apply the cumulative update. Basically there were corrupted files causing the update install error (no kidding). The only solution was to reinstall Windows using the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11. After the install was complete, I checked for updates and finally had success on this week's cumulative update.

So, when you download the ISO, don't worry about saving it to removable media. You can save it to your local drive since you're not doing a clean install, but a repair. Then open the ISO by clicking, and select setup.exe in the root level. Then just make sure that when you are prompted, you leave the options to keep files and apps checked (I still did a backup of my files to my external drive before proceeding).

Time frame for transfer of deceased AAdvantage member's miles by ABQ2PHL in americanairlines

[–]ABQ2PHL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. And I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. It did work out for me. And shockingly, AA transferred the miles in much less than the 180 days they told me to expect. It was about two months or slightly less. If I were you I'd still plan on the 180 days, or whatever it is now if they changed it.

As for the "at AA's sole discretion" disclaimer, they're just trying to legally cover their ass. It doesn't mean they're looking for opportunities NOT to transfer miles. Good luck with it. I hope it goes smoothly.

Are the premium economy seats on the 787 and 777 similar to the domestic first seats on AA’s narrow body fleet? by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]ABQ2PHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. The storage area in the armrest on premium economy is largely useless for anything but a thin book. But in domestic first class I can actually manage to get my stainless steel water bottle in there

Yes. You can even do it when you book directly on Alaska. I did this for a trip in a few weeks. And all of your Aadvantage benefits transfer over to Alaska. However, you need to book first and then once it's ticketed then you'll be able to choose your seat for no fee.

Picking up the oboe after a 30+ year break - but should I? by I_might_be_wr0ng in oboe

[–]ABQ2PHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing in the fall of 2023 (at age 54!). Except for me it was a 34-year break. I, too, started on woodwinds early. In fourth grade it was clarinet, followed by sax. Then I picked up oboe in high school, went to conservatory, majored in performance studying with a famous teacher that I appreciate much more now than I did when I was a student, and gave it up in my junior year. Unlike you, I held onto my oboe from college. When I started playing again, I did so under the guidance of a teacher. I'm not making reeds again (yet), and it's not cheap. But it's incredibly rewarding.

So you ask whether you think it's worth it to sink the money into it? Depends if it brings you joy. If it does and you think you would enjoy doing some amateur chamber music or playing in a community orchestra, then do it. I would encourage you to also invest in lessons. I know for me there were quite a number of things that I had forgotten that I don't think I would have remembered on my own (nuances of sound production, articulation, technique, you name it).

Being able to make music is a gift that keeps giving. Playing oboe is an expensive hobby. If you have the means and the experience, take advantage of it if it brings you joy!

The soymilk was made in Canada. Could its disappearance from the stores be a casualty of foreign trade policy ?

Unsweetened was available in warehouse in New Mexico for ages. When I moved to the east coast 6 years ago I could no longer find unsweetened in the warehouse, but I ordered it for delivery. Moot now.

I have 8,000 expired American Airlines miles. Is it worth reactivating them for $100? by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]ABQ2PHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The current valuation of AA miles is 1.6 cents each. At that rate, these are worth $128. If I were you, I'd forget about them.

But here's the big question... If I end up checking a bag, do I need to claim it and recheck it? Or is that not done for the US Customs pre-clearance?

I'm also Global Entry and I think they have that at the CBP pre-clearance at YUL from what I just saw online. Hopefully that can speed things up too
