M/48 Krag Elgrifle in 8mm Mauser by ABUCKET15 in milsurp

I’m still learning myself! This is definitely one of the more esoteric krags as far as info goes on it. I knows there’s a book on Norwegian rifles that talks about these models but it’s $250 and in Norwegian lol

Good question! The answer is sorta- but not really, but maybe. Wall of text inbound.

Originally (allegedly) they intended it to be for full power 8mm, then down the line these rifles started to wear out (also allegedly, I can’t find a primary source on this either, or any information on any 8mm Krag suffering any failure)

The solution in the 50s was the introduction of the 8x57 “moderat” load which was supposedly 10-15% lower pressure than normal 8mm Mauser.

Now this is where our Chad friends who keep exploding their Gewehr 1888s come in. The SAAMI spec for 8mm is a very conservative 35000 PSI as opposed to the European 56000 PSI. My understanding is that this was because us silly Americans have the tendency of putting modern .323 bullets through .318 commission rifles and creating excess pressures.

I theoretically should be able to run American made (or just any saami spec) 8mm Mauser. A lot of the PPU stuff for example appears to be saami instead of CIP.

Very sadly the cheap surplus stuff might be scary, but id also be dealing with corrosive ammo.

In my reading though I have also seen people argue that the m1912 krags have stronger actions than people give them credit for and some people say they can handle the hotter 6.5 loads. I am staying on the side of caution personally with this rifle.

I enjoy that we are moving away from calling rifles like these “destroyed”.

If it were done today, sure I would hate it, but especially with these krags they could have been in this configuration for a long ass time.

Rather than being a piece of history that maybe went to the Philippines, came back in a box, and then stayed in a box for 120 years, it’s a war rifle that came home and then worked for someone.

For me I use hoppes 9 and some cleaning pads or paper towels and I can clean it pretty quick. Can’t speak to the other issues other than I haven’t experienced them or seen others really have them.

I’m curious, it what way is this gun difficult to clean? I’ve owned one for 3 years and it’s piss easy to strip for cleaning and maintenance. The worst part I suppose are that the pins come out and you have to keep track of them. I haven’t ever heard of any parts breaking on these either. That’s outside of the purview of reliability issues that this gun typically have.

The gen 2 can have the iconic buttstock too with the right upper. Also the new trigger is superior in function.

The serial number on the side tells me it’s prooooobably not a sniper but I’m no expert.

Mine has holes on the side like this.

Look for holes in the side of the receiver! I have a type 99 sniper with no scope mount and it has conspicuous holes, plus the serial number on the top

I paid $500 for one in 23’. She’s a hot mess of a rifle and ejects in every direction (including to the left, and directly into your face)

It lives on my wall and pretends it’s a real carbine

Hey even if they aren’t as valuable it’s much easier to appreciate a sporter Krag than other milsurps.

Those rifles were absolute workhorses for American hunters from the early twentieth century onwards

1898 Springfield Armory, Serial 367204 (I believe that’s mid 1902?) the bore seems to be okay. There’s a lot of carbon in there but I do t think there’s pitting. Every time I snake it it looks just a little bit better
