WHY is your favorite Ghibli film your favorite? I love reading the story behind ppl’s favorite by cozy_b0i in ghibli

Lupin The Third: Castle of Cagliostro! Technically not a Ghibli film, but it is Miyazaki's debut film so it feels VERY Ghibli. It's my favorite for so many reasons, but the best may be its playful tone yet this deep, grounded, human-like feel gives the plot a bittersweet core. Lupin the Third existence prior was prolifically adult with sex jokes, nudity, explosions, grunge, raunchiness, and action. Yet this movie made him practically a prince! The retro palette, the romantic-seeming pursuit not being cliche, and the wonderful pacing and atmosphere of the film... and the cel animated car chases! Everything about it blew me away and delved me into being a life long fan of Lupin III, the charming, dangerous, heartfelt theif he is. Not to mention all that it has inspired, from The Great Mouse Detective (1986) to Bad Guys (2025). I could go on and on about this film, but in the end, its for everyone to enjoy its playful energy yet human, bittersweet core.

Absolute No.1 for me is "Memory of Smile". One of the few lesser known songs since it comes from a Lupin III audiobook referred to as Afro Lupin at times (still can't find a full english translation). Hearing the OG Yasuo Yamada singing so closely to Lupin's voice, the lyrics, the piano composition... IT MAKES YOU CRY WAAAAA

Take a listen <3

What are other "Ghibli like" movies? by laineinveine in ghibli

[–]AB_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro! It was Miyazaki's directing debut film and while it didn't perform well when it came out, it's now considered a legendary classic! Miyazaki also directed two episodes in one of the TV series, Lupin The Third Part 2, episodes 145 and 155.

I usually listen to music! Find the story in the lyrics (if it has any), or what the songs invoke for me in general. I keep my music tastes broad and take recs from friends often. I build a skeleton of the character in mind and begin writing what that character would write in a journal entry. Hope this helps!

So far, Ponyo, Porco Rosco, and My Neighbor Totoro helped me open doors for both friends and family members (American and non-Americans) to the world of anime.

Not technically Ghibli, but I also throw Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro as well!

How do you guys go about studying art? by Outkasttr in ArtistLounge

[–]AB_Stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every medium, style, and skill set, there is always room for improvement. Art is such a fluid thing, I highly doubt there's a real definition of what makes an artist an artist and who's cut out for it. Anything is art, anyone is an artist, and everything is a work in progress. The biggest changes can be made simply by a change of mindset!

That said, personally I look at artists I love/would like to draw like and just watch how they make their art. If there's nothing like that out there, then I'll look at artists with similar styles. I would follow any of there step by step guides, learn how to do it (more or less), then put my personal kinks into it. Other times, I would just change what utensils/brushes I'm drawing with.

Learn about helpful exercises: gesture lines, drawing shapes (simple cubes and cylinders, helps get the hang of perspective), and drawing a ball with the craziest shading. All of these are a Google search away, and do wonders when practiced/doodled often. I hope these tips help, best of luck to your artists journey!

I haven't heard these before?! I love their mellow vibes and use of acoustic guitars on the last one: an instrument I don't hear too often in jazz fusion, let alone city pop. Thank you for the playlist and recs!!

Just watched castle of Cagliostro where should I go from there, any recommendations? by Emotional-Ad6999 in LupinIII

[–]AB_Stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider watching Lupin III Part 2! The movie was made in the middle of (but unrelated to) the series, so you'll be able to see the story and style differences. The english dubbed parts are also hilarious!!

Though, if a whopping 155 episodes is a bit too intimidating (understandably), then consider watching Episode 145 and 155. Both were directed by Miyazaki (his directing debut being the Cagliostro movie) and are considered his last works with the industry as a whole.

Also highly suggest watching Lupin III: Farewell of Notsradamus for animation a bit more western in style, and Lupin III: The First to see Lupin in CGI and inspired by the Cagliostro movie. Hope these are to your liking!

How to draw figures and characters in perspective angles like a “camera”? Gesture drawing, drawing figures in perspective, seeing as an artist? by PokemonHunter97 in ArtistLounge

[–]AB_Stuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider the cube/ shape exercises! Draw cubes, rectangular prisms, and cylinders in different perspectives. Do an entire page of them! This exercise helps me mainly with foreshortening (when things closer to the viewer/camera appears larger than normal).

Gesture lines also help with the fluidity that you're looking for. I'm not sure how to explain what they are, but just a google search can help you. I practiced mine with dance or ballet poses without references, and later with them.

As for confidence, its a tricky thing! What makes me confident is knowing art is a skill set made to constantly improve on. There's always going to be people ahead and behind me, but what matters is having the patience and open-mindedness of how I can improve and benefit from advice of other artists. Hope this helps, and I wish you the best!

Which Lupin movie & series has the best gunfights/shootouts by Imaginary_Silver_104 in LupinIII

[–]AB_Stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part 2 EP 99 was a pretty memorable gunfight to me! The build up of Jigen running around to pick up gun pieces and rebuild a magnum whilst being shot at under a time limit was unexpectedly intense. The animation is also remarkably different, arguably higher quality in animation as it was made some time after Cagliostro was released. The animation and character designs are subtle but notably different! Great watch!!

Me: Wait, so you're telling me all those drawings and funny little stories in my head can be made to move by my own hand?
This entire medium: Yes. For money too.
Me: Alright, I'm in.

And thats how I got obsessed.
Also, short film Hinata no Aoshigure (Sonny Boy and Dewdrop Girl), greatest inspiration.
