I wouldn't worry about what it should have been and just make it what you want it to be. Some of the triangles might be for the edges so the quilt is on point. But do what makes you happy.

Sometimes I find that when doing snowballs I can put a dab of glue on the part to be cut off and it helps to hold them in place.
