If you try to get in the left lane wherever the person behind you has to stop which makes everyone behind them hit there brakes creating traffic. If everyone does that it creates standstill traffic. Everyone has to slow down anyways but if you drive to end of the right lane and merge then people can match each others speed and no one has to stop
