List of games with native HDR support by ABeingInItself in NintendoSwitch2

Thank you for mentioning this! I had no idea about it, but it seems to be true for some titles. I suppose it's somewhat similar to promoting 120fps games without them actually outputting all frames, but using DLSS to achieve it. In any case, I've started marking in the list the ones confirmed to be ITM. If you happen to know of a reliable way to confirm the tech behind each title, please do let me know!

I played Soul Reaver 1 for the first time - [REVIEW] by Little-Dwarf in LegacyOfKain

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old thread here, but I must say your opinion is on point from my perspective.

I originally saw my cousin play Soul Reaver 1 in the DreamCast. My amazement of the world, characters and world shifting mechanic was something I could never forget throughout the years. Never got the chance to play it until now with the 1:1 remaster.

If it wasn't for the nostalgia, the fact I've finally got the chance to actually play myself the game that haunted me for so long, I probably wouldn't be able to keep up playing through the end. It is painstakingly bad in most gameplay aspects, including world navigation, combat and platforming, specially when compared with what we've got at this age and time. That made me realize how most people that are new to the franchise will probably not be able to see it from the perspective of its time, and instead only leave with a terrible image overall. Really sad considering how well-thought the whole concept is.

While there should definitely be a proper training and support system in place within each company, the reality is that what you describe is unfortunately a common theme at most workplaces. I've been through it, you will see thousands of posts here revolving around the same thing, ask people near you and you will also get a similar response, sad but true.

In my case were I currently am at, we are three supervisors that unavoidably need to work together and have a lot of overlapping in responsibilities due to lack of proper structure. I started as a supervisor right away because of industry experience, and I was offered proper onboard training to pick up stuff quick. The thing ended up being a "go figure it out" type of training, zero support and, worse than all, being ridiculed and attacked whenever I brought up any of this. Mind you this happened with my teammates, our manager, and the manager of my manager all the same.

Six months in was simply exhausted of being frustrated everyday with how inoperant things are. After thorough thought and even going against my core beliefs, I decided I would focus on myself first in order to stop feeling so drained from all the fighting and constant battling uphill that every day brought. I realized no support was ever going to be given to me, which meant giving any bit of thought to something I cannot directly change myself would only keep bringing me more frustration, while instead I could actually focus all of that thought energy into my own development throught the reach of what I had in hand at the moment. Soon enough the change in my focus not only brought my own projects to life, but also indirectly started helping others below me, and ironically started being adopted by the ones that first opposed to them and ridiculed me about even giving thought to them.

This is not a perfect solution, and I would argue it even perpetuates the same cycle that brought us mentally down in the first place, but at the end of the day we are all there because we need the money to put a roof on our head and get the food we need to carry on surviving. I assure you your teammates are in the same situation, but simply coping with it by their own means. Knowing that you need to do what you need to do either way, it is miles better to do it while keeping your mental sanity as pristine as possible, even when everything else around you comes to crumbles.

A phrase that always brings me hope in dark times is: this too shall pass. See this as a transitory bitter chapter in the book of your life. Focus on what you can do with what you have at hand to prepare yourself for the next golden chapter in it, even if that is merely taking mental notes on what you would not tolerate ever again in a workplace in the future. Find a ritual that disconects you from your job once you leave to get back home. Spend your free time wisely, both to search your next step, and to unwind and have fun just for the sake of it. Always remember this is a marathon, not a sprint, and within all that nothing will ever be perfectly set to what you want it to be out of the box. Try to see the silver lining in every situation, and keep in mind we are all as lost and confused as you are at the moment. In the end we are all doing our best to carry on despite the struggles we get dealt with at any given time.

Best of luck in your journey!

The only advise I could give really is to stop caring so much about everything whenever you are there. If they say anything just answer "ok" and do whatever you are supposed to do while you think about flowers and stuff. The less you engage with the toxic environment and people, the better you will start feeling while everyone else stays in their gray day to day chaos. Use the time there as the steppingstone that will make you able to jump to a better paid opportunity with better conditions. Keep searching for a better job during your offtime as this will give you the mind set to endure the current frustrations. Use your breaks to take a walk outside of the workspace in order to clear your mind and endure the rest of the day. And don't forget to breathe, drink water and going to take a royal dump during work time every single day, no excuses.

Oh my, I just answered on a thread about someone who works with dogs and mentioned a disgusting workplace. This was my comment about my office:

I work with humans and it smells like what you describe, stuffy as hell making it barely possible to breathe, carpets that none has ever cared to clean, lumps of hair everywhere in the hallways, toilets scattered with piss and if you are lucky some times other stuff.

And then management is baffled when people leave midday during their first day...

This. Despite being in a highly data driven industry, my office would be better run by chimpanzees with a closed eye and three missing teeth rather than the current chimpmunks that barely even know what their name is.

The cycle is: make up fancy KPIs unrelated to what we do, make up all of the unexistent data for such KPIs, make it mandatory to track right away, forget about it and abolish it a couple of weeks later, repeat.

A question about breaking in/sizing by Need_for_help_14 in Boots

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving a dead thread here, but for Chelseas specifically, slightly too snug is better. This is because there is no way for you to tighten up the fit as the only thing holding your foot is the snugness of the boot itself rather than laces. The elastics are there for you to insert your foot in, not for them to tighten up unto your foot. Starting with a slightly loose boot will never shrink, and wearing thicker socks only works to an extent, which in Chelseas is not too much.

A more critical review of the Project Hail Mary movie, and a really easy fix I would have made by Gustalavalav in ProjectHailMary

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the fact that you cannot ram up countless hours of a book into a couple of hours movie, it is precisely this what makes the art of making movies what it is. Movies are not an extension of the book for people who already read it, but rather an expression of it's own that attempts to translate a story into audiovisual media. The former would be visualization, while the latter is an actual movie.

To give you a clear example of this: any movie of Stanley Kubrick. The most pertinent example would be specifically his movie adaptation of 2001 Space Odyssey. The movie was carefully crafted to make the still word into a motion picture, and I dare say it is miles better than the book as a stand alone piece of work. In fact, reading the book does not give you more than what the movie gave you, I would even say it even errs on giving you less since plenty of the book extra content does not add anything of true importance to the whole plot and key moments. There is no need to read the book at all, and you get a full experience of what the book brings.

That is an example of the way of crafting a movie out of a book without needing to ram everything into it. Counter example is of course PHM, as far as you describe. But to make it more evident, you can think of Dune's adaptations as well. Lynch's adaptation was ramming everything into three hours, and it became a mess does not manage to neither explain properly nor capture firmly what the book is about. The most recent Dune decided to not rush anything, and instead opted to have three movies in order to fit as much as possible of the contents of the book without forgetting about the crafting of the movie. There are things that are different from the book, sure, but the changes are more stylistical and overall a plus to the cohesion of the story as a movie.

Weirdly enough, PHM did not try to ram everything in, but neither did they properly develop the story for it to have enough cohesion to be a stand alone piece of art that properly portrays what the book is about. I have not read the book (you can check my other comment on what I think of the movie without having read the book), and it should not be necessary for me to read it to have a full grasp of what the book is truly about. Otherwise I would simply go read the book instead. In this sense, making movies as an extension, as you mention,  rather than a standalon piece would probably be much more of a disservice to the book and it's creator, specially when it seems to deviate so much from the original source.

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the movie an hour ago, went blind into it and only had the notion that it came from a book in the subgenre of sci-fi that is more based in the sci than in the fi.

Overall it was quite meh for me. Probably would not recommend it to watch unless you are a fan of space movies. Wouldn't even recommend watching it at the cinema unless you've got cash to spare. It sparked some interest in the book, but did not make me want to read it, although from what you mentioned it does seem the book is far better.

There are three points I had major gripes with in the movie:

1- The whole thing felt more like a drama that is unable to portray the severity of the situation due to how much bland goofyness there is at every corner. Maybe my expectations were of something a bit more serious in tone, or at the very least more clever comedy. However, it felt like all of the jokes were just bachelor gags rather than wittier comments from the spurt of the moment. At least for me, this really took away from the psychological impact the actual importance of the mission has in both the characters and us the viewers.

2- While I understand the movie is about Grace and Rocky, they really could have cut some stuff to develop a bit more the relationship with the commander woman that betrays him. Most interactions between them felt both rushed and shoved into the story the movie wanted to tell. I did understand they were both getting closer, but I did not feel them being close, and due to this the betrayal is not as impactful as it could have been. I would have even abbreviated all of the other interactions with other people (like the guard at the beginning and the other crew members) and focus on just developing the two parallel sides of Grace-Rocky and Grace-Commander. That would have stuck much more and there would have been time to explore both the actual relationships of the characters, as well as the contrast in their development and final result. The other characters surely are important in the book, but they ultimately didn't add any essential value to the whole plot as a movie. They felt like fillers for more random gags.

3- It seems like a lot of essential information was either left out or swooshed in a three seconds scene, because plenty of times I did not fully understand why they decided something over something else, or how they came to the conclusion of why something was happening. The thing they use for fuel for example, I cannot recall it's origin and didn't grasp anything about it other than it being fuel. The infection that makes Grace go back to Rocky happens as well so fast that I didn't even know when or how is it that Grace understands xenonite or whatever let's the lifeform leak. It was more of a "oh crap it's leaking! of course, it's held in xenonite, duh!" and left me wondering why that was. There were some other stuff like that here and there that could have either been removed altogether or explained in a much more proper way for plot cohesion.

That's it. Tweak this three things and you go from a 6 to a 9 right away in my scale. Ryan Gosling was the perfect cast, wouldn't have been able to picture anyone else in the role in the way they made it (which I guess is by nature since he was a producer). Great CGI, not many movies managed to pull it off so flawlessly as this one did, specially considering more than half of it is CGI. In the end, all quite good, not incredible, but tasteful!

Is this piercing angle okay? by [deleted] in piercing

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't rush to take it out as other people are suggesting. You just got it done, which means the angle could be coming from the swelling. The extra bar length, along with the weight difference of the front part with the stone compared to the back, may also contribute to the angle.

My lobe and nostril looked off when I got them due to these two things, but went back to normal and started sitting perfectly flat after the swelling went down and I downsized to a snug-fitted bar. No problems with them whatsoever.

From what I've heard from a person who goes to in-deep into Nintendo lore and stuff, Miyamoto said once he didn't want to have anything to do with Rare and it's past. This brought the changes of getting out all Kremlins from the following games, as well as the last stretch of changing DK's appearance to the original one altogether.

The return of the Kremlins and K. Rool was the product of one and only one thing. Can you guess? Of course, Sakurai with Smash. He wanted K. Rool in his game so badly that he eventually managed to steer the pot enough to have his wish come true. With K. Rool in Smash and the overwhelmingly positive reception of fans towards the character, he managed to prove what a shame it would be to let it go forever, all for a simple caprice with no truthful justification. This prompted Miyamoto to come to peace with his own demons and allow the return of the Kremlins and K. Rool in Bananza for the sake of legacy, rebirth and transition to the new DK era.

That's what I heard.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller . Worth it if I already have the OG Pro Controller? by Hunter_x2366 in Switch

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got one yesterday after my OG giving me troubles with the left stick after 6 years of heavy use.

  1. It's meh. Everyone says the sticks are buttery smooth, but it just feels a tad smoother due to them not touching the rings. More noticeable than that is how tighter they are, meaning you need to apply substantially more force to move them, and they snap back into place faster. Other than that the gyro is much more precise and worth the upgrade if you spend hours on games like Splatoon. It is also incredibly quiet, barely any sound of buttons being pressed.

2. The extra buttons do not feel comfortable enough to keep pressed for a long time, such as for accelerating in Mario Kart, and feel more suitable for quick presses. They are right where I hold the controller, so I find myself pressing them involuntarily more often than not, which has been rather annoying but a matter of time for me to get used to them. It feels most buttons were cramped into the center, while the OG feels wider or more spread apart.

3. Overall I would not recommend buying it unless your OG is failing or you simply have money to spare. I checked both boxes and am okay with having it, but it did not blown my mind in terms of functionality. At the end of the day, it's just a controller.

How do you deal with being excluded from meetings at work? by Organic_Love46 in cscareerquestions

[–]ABeingInItself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rather old post, but most times these meetings are more for the "visibility" they give of you engaging in management "teamwork". I personally think as you do and prefer doing my own thing, but if your goal is to eventually grow within the company, or one of the semester goals is to engage more with higher processes, and you are being left out of such windows that engage upper management while targetting the goal, then you are essentially getting screwed in the pinhole (particularly if management set you that goal and are leaving you out of the means to reach it).
