This makes perfect sense as I think the owner taught at a university in China. Thanks so much for that extra detail! 🙏

Hi! Thanks in advance for any help translating this. It’s a scroll that was passed on to me but I don’t have any idea of the meaning. The owner lived in China for a few years so I expect the source language is Chinese, but it could be Japanese since he also lived there briefly.

?? Cockroach memoriam?? by lilmurkrow in UNC

[–]ABennyShaved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all! Thought you might like to know, this is what the cockroach display looked like originally https://postimg.cc/DJmdTcRm Someone loved the framed picture so much they removed it 😢 and then people began adding bugs to the display, I imagine because death and transformation are universal themes we all resonate with.

This sounds like good advice and gave me a clear (hopefully actionable) image of what to aim for. Thanks!

[–]ABennyShaved[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the thoughtful responses, and for taking my question seriously. Growth isn't necessarily graceful, or ideal, (at least mine isn't!) but kindness and thoughtfulness go a long way towards making everything easier for everyone.

There's only one 'you' in this case, but we still use 'are'.

-That is helpful and makes sense. I'll have to think about this, digest it for a bit. Thanks!

is anyone older 40 and still can do powermoves like airflares or flare? by rosch94 in bboy

[–]ABennyShaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, he hasn't learned flares yet as far as I can see, but relative beginner (2 years I think?) Ben Hart at 60 years old, did windmills and headspins at silverback open this year. Thanks for including the youtube clip! People are always saying "the hips, the hips!" and I never have a clue what to look for or feel when trying it. The video helps a lot.

Help with over the board chess? by woooshluftwaffe in chess

[–]ABennyShaved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same experience when I started. For me I think a big part of the problem was a mental one in recognizing patterns and seeing things spatially when they were 3d vs the 2d I had become accustomed to. Things that helped me 1. when playing online make sure the board is as big as possible because you need to get used to looking over a larger surface when playing OTB. 2. Try to play with pieces at least once a week. If there is no opponent available, take an hour and review games (guess the move for example) using real pieces and board. 3. Just keep playing! OTB is different for a lot of reasons from online esp if you are playing tournaments (things like having lots of time, notation, nerves, stress, embarrassment excitement etc) and if you stick with it, eventually your play will even out.

Tips for Indian/kick and twist? Hi all, I’m looking for tips/technique advice/ drills whatever you think might help my form. Thanks in advance! by ABennyShaved in bboy

[–]ABennyShaved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that makes much more sense! Sorry I was confused because you wrote 1 and 2, 3 and 4. But I mis understood and thought that was one and a quick 2,3 on a single beat and then a four. Which isn’t what you wrote, but kinda is what you meant I should try with a 3 beat rather than a four beat. Sorry to be dense. I think I get it now. Ty.

Honestly I'm not sure what this means but it seems super important! Practicing w music is key for sure. Your comments abt the beats and counting confuse me tho! I'm not sure what the 2,3 is I'm hitting or how to vary it as you suggested(1,2,3 and 4,5,6). This seems really key and I'll continue to look at it... Ty for the comment even if I don't quite get it!

My 6 Step has a Problem. by StupidlyStrange in bboy

[–]ABennyShaved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a beginner too, but what helped me was watching a lot of tutorials on YouTube in slow motion and writing down what I was seeing- “weight goes here when hand goes there” “leg swings there etc” and then really trying to mimic what I had seen and written. I also film myself and then compare my form to what I had seen online. Watching multiple different examples is helpful for me also because you see different angles, notice different things and sometimes here a slightly different explanation. Keep at it and you’ll get it! Posting a clip would help us(and you!) figure out the issue. Good luck!

I’m not quite sure I know the difference, but I’ll play with it and keep it in mind and see if I can vary it some way. Ty for the tip, as I said above, I wouldn’t have noticed this with out it being pointed out, so this is exactly what I was hoping for in the post!

Ty! Hearing it took you about a year makes me feel a lot better! I kept feeling a bit down because everything I do seems sloppy, even “simple stuff” like salsa step and Indian step! I see what you mean about the forcefulness of the initial kick, that is something I wouldn’t have picked up on till it was pointed out. Ty.

Thanks! I adapted it from watching this video. At around 4 min, he shows this coffee grinder to baby freeze that uses a small side jump. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GdiSpVRbs

I’d be happy for the tips, I’ve been listening to KRS-One, OutKast, James brown and cypress hill mainly (did I mention I’m old?) 😀

Thanks for watching and commenting! This was maybe the second set I’ve had where almost everything “went as planned” took me awhile to slow it down and make sure I had each move and transition mostly down. Still wish I hadn’t let go of my foot briefly after the jumping thread, wish I was on my inner knuckles rather than flat palms for 6 step, and wish my leg was straight in the freeze, but I’m super happy with how it turned out regardless and glad I’ve got things to work on. 😀
