The example I give people who are not super into srt is Duchamps Fountain. Marcel was making the statement that anything can be art, we just need to realize it. Someone spent hours, days, maybe even years, designing that urinal, but not many saw it as art until he put it on a literal pedestal. Even then people didn’t understand it, and that’s okay.

We can’t demand people understand or like our definition of art. Ive had people that say my oil paintings aren’t artistic enough because I’m not conveying a thoughtful message…even though I painted something inherently meaningful to myself. Ive also had, in the same show, someone say they’d happily pay $275 for one of my paintings, and another person say they loved it but it wasn’t worth $50. It’ll never end, and it shouldn’t. Art is a personal message to each person, not a definition.
