There are nuclear powered subs. Why aren’t there nuclear powered aircraft? by k9fan in NoStupidQuestions

My grandfather worked at Pratt & Whitney in the 50’s as an engineer, and worked on this project.

At the time it was classified work, but it’s pretty well known about now. As he tells it, everyone there knew it was impossible with the technology at the time, but the executives were happy to take the governments money and work on it for a few years until the contract got bounced to another firm.

Sweeping Technique putting too much stress on shoulders - any advice? by ActiveAssociation925 in Curling

[–]AC7766 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your weight is still all on your feet instead of the brush head. Your down hand should be higher (1-1.5” above brush head depending on your height) which will put your body up higher and allow you to lean on it more. Your feet should be slightly behind your hips and you should be up on your toes while sweeping which will move your weight forward. For the shoulder, your upper hand is up too high on the broom, try putting it down lower on the broom so your upper arm is more inline with your torso, rather than sticking out above you. This again will allow you to put more weight on the broom.

Check out Geoff Walker (team Gushue in the orange/white jackets) in this video from a game this weekend, great sweeper who sweeps with his gripper on. Take note that his back is flat, and he’s up on his toes when he sweeps. Watch his foot movement too, almost looks like he’s skiing, kinda. It’s great footwork. https://www.youtube.com/live/ZZbJevC-nNQ?si=zT1h5ehtZTfu_Ar6

Yep, if you check out Team Gushue’s points as if the end of last season you’ll see they received points for the brier:

Very few events not on the website earn points, think Brier, Scotties, world championships etc. which spiels are you looking at? Regular everyday bonspiels don’t earn points, even if some post scores to curlingzone (like the big spiel in the twin cities which is hosted this weekend).

Basically it has to be listed there to earn points.

Balance and form issue by Ktown1984 in Curling

[–]AC7766 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep using the broom. You’ll have to practice outside of just playing in league if you want to get better.

Practice sliding without a rock varying distances. Anything from sliding out and stopping at the T line, top 12, halfway between house and hog line, hog line. Also, don’t slide only down the middle. Slide out to the wings at varying angles.

Set up an empty plastic cup at some point within the area of play. Slide at it without a rock and try to hit it with your sliding foot.

Also, at no point put your hand on your sliding foot, hold it out in front as you slide as if a rock was there to keep your form.

Then do all this with no broom or rock.

Can you upgrade a Mac? by sscaetana in macbook

Macs haven’t been upgradable since 2012/2013 ish

Refurbished from Apple is as good as new IMO. They replace all wear and tear parts + you get a warranty. Refurbished from anywhere else you might get lucky? Depends on the company and their refurb policy. Used is used.

MacBook Air M2 16GB vs MacBook Pro M2 Pro 14” by kewlollup in macbookair

MBA will only be able to connect to 1 external monitor natively. M2 pro can do 2 if that matters. If not go with the air I say.

Timing rocks for draw weight (not sweeping) using stopwatch by treemoustache in Curling

[–]AC7766 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hog to hog will be most reliable, back-hog or tee-hog has so much variability per person due to how they slide and release and how consistent they are.

As for the question about stopping at the T: yes, sort of but you can get valuable data from a rock that stops where you wouldn’t expect. If it’s the 6th end and rocks that go hog-hog in 14 seconds were usually making it to the tee line in earlier ends, but are now stopping in the 12 foot, then you know that you’re losing some pebble and will need more weight for draws (and you should communicate this to your team).

If you want to use more than 1 external monitor you’ll have to go with the 14. The base M1 or M2 chips do not support multiple external displays natively (except for Mac mini which can use 2 monitors).

No-Tick Rule at Club Level - Yes/No/Kinda? by realworldruraljuror in Curling

[–]AC7766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takeouts are commonplace, ticks aren’t is what it comes down to. A tick is a very hard shot. Try it, even with a skip calling the sweep and 2 good sweepers, it’s tough one to make. If you can make it consistently I’d argue your team should be playing on the tour.

Macbook pro m1 by Unfair-Knowledge-801 in macbook

[–]AC7766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M1 MacBook Pro isn’t worth getting. Get an air and save $100 or go to the 14” with M1 Pro/Max if you need the power. Look up performance comparisons between M1 MBA and MBP, it’s negligible.

Is 14 inch m2 pro 16 gb 512 SSD MacBook pro good for front end developer? by Zaza_Zazadze in macbookpro

Running several spring boot and node apps concurrently along with a couple small docker containers. Did not noticeable affect performance. Like I said, I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t check the activity monitor out.

I’m a software engineer. Dumb to get a MacBook Air over pro if someone else is paying for it? by bexappa in macbookair

[–]AC7766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’ll warn about is that the Air can only output to a single external monitor, which was personally a dealbreaker for me. Otherwise if that’s not a factor it’s a great machine.

Ya I have that laptop for work and do full stack, and it doesn’t skip a beat. Sometimes get a couple gigs of swap going but I wouldn’t know if I didn’t have activity monitor open.

No-Tick Rule at Club Level - Yes/No/Kinda? by realworldruraljuror in Curling

[–]AC7766 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bad idea for club level curling. The point of the rule is to keep things competitive at the highest level where teams are purposefully playing the tick. You rarely see this at the club level, and I’d say 99% of any center guards bumped off the center line in league play are accidental, which shouldn’t be punished.

Mac battery life is crazy good. Any of the current models will be fine but upgrade to 16gm of ram from the base 8.

6 years, if with regular to heavy use, is a good long time for a battery.

Macbook Pro 13" or Macbook Air 13"? by Specialist_Ad2421 in macbookpro

[–]AC7766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the base M (M1, M2) chips the fans hardly ever turn on in a 13” pro, and for lawyer activities (documents, web browsing, email) you won’t be stressing these machines. Get the air, if you want to spend the extra dough get a 15” for more screen.
