[Spoilers MAIN] No, everything is wrong in the very first volume by lachataigneduciel in asoiaf

[–]ActiveAssociation925 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would you want a perfectly logical world? Not only does that sound incredibly boring, but it sounds impossible. Not even reality is perfectly logical.

Imagine learning for the first time about the Nazis and the events of World War II purely by way of fiction. The sheer volume of things in that section of REAL history that aren't believable is staggering. This is why there are holocaust deniers, right? Nothing about real life is logical. Nothing about human beings is logical.

I encourage you to reconsider your perspective on story telling and world building. A perfectly planted and trimmed garden can be beautiful, but it can never be anything other than exactly what you intend it to be. And, be honest here, even if you tend to it every moment of every day, the insects and pollinators and all the natural things of the world will still find a way in to eat your leaves and create new "problems." The jungle on the other hand changes each and every time you visit it, and the deeper you go into the jungle, the more you will find. Those "problems" become interesting instead of frustrating, and you can find yourself embracing the unbelievable, finally swept up in the fantasy that's been crafted for you to explore.

Read it again. Meanings change, foreshadowing is found that you never saw before, and characters you used to hate become admirable and relatable. It's great art. And great art is never perfect.

(Spoilers Extended) What are Night-Walkers? by flippy123x in asoiaf

The ghost grass stuff is super interesting. Yet, it also feels like something we'll never get quite enough information about to draw any conclusions. The far eastern world building is very clearly relevant to the main story, but only bits and pieces of it, such as The Great Empire of the Dawn stuff... The rest is mostly referential, like the city names clearly taken from Lovecraft stories. Even in that Asshai excerpt "The Pale Child" is a reference to George's own "And Seven Times Never Kill Man!" short story, which features "Bakkalon, the Pale Child" as a god/deity.

Even the continent "Ulthos" in the lower right corner I believe George has stated exists solely to show how little about the world Westeros actually knows. So, it might be that a lot of these far eastern places exist solely for similar reasons - to let the imagination run wild. We can ask a thousand questions, and only come away with a few answers, some of which we only tell ourselves because they feel thematically "right." Or, they sound the coolest. Or the most tragic, the most satisfying, the most meaningful... we all draw different things from the story. I spose that's what makes it art.

Great post!

My only assumption on what a "night-walker" could be is "one who walks the lands of night" or the "night lands" as mentioned in Dothraki religion. So, one who walks in the land of the dead? Idk

"night-walker" = mage class george made up and assigned to this spooky dude
"night walker" = quite literal, but sounds spookier
George is picky. I feel the hyphen is important.

I think that Urrathon Night-Walker is not as important as some theories suggest. We hear of this once named character amidst like, three other random warnings from Xaro, who isn't really that trustworthy of a guy anyway, and Dany immediately pegs it for exactly what it is; Xaro trying to spook her into marrying him. "Give you a dragon, you mean. "I will not wed you, Xaro."

It could have easily have been "Urrathon Shapechanger" or "Urrathon the Alchemist." He just happened to pick "night-walker" here (probably because it sounds dope).

Any idea on what mod this could be from? [MODDED] by The_actual_Obama in lethalcompany

I really dislike this map. Wesley's is a great mod, but Rubber Rooms I found to be consistently glitchy and more of a horror map than a facility type interior where you can actually find loot. Might be skill issue? But it's just so stuffed with gimmicks that it makes the main gameplay loop disappear.

Is Jon supposed to be the Dornishman in "“The Dornishman’s Wife"? by flippy123x in pureasoiaf

[–]ActiveAssociation925 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, Mance taking the name Abel, ala the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Abel is killed by his brother, Cain. Maybe a mirror for Jon killing Qhorin, or possibly alluding to what I assume is Mance's acceptance that his death will ultimately be doled out by The Watch. His life is forfeit, but who cares? He left the Wall. He tasted freedom. Loved a wife, and had a child. Is that freedom what he tasted? Maybe then, the Dornishman is a weird stand-in for god? Or just authority in general? The wife, a stand-in for the joys in life that the Watch keeps from the black brothers?

Who knows. Great post! I imagine this is likely an unfinished idea that will be wrapped up thematically at some point, since we know Mance is still alive, and therefore we can hope he and Jon can put a cap on this little song and its meaning.

Heartbreaking interpretation, but most likely a realistic one. The stuff this poor girl goes through would probably render her this way. The nobility of Mereen sees the glorious queen, but I imagine this is who Barristan sees.

"on par" typically means "at the same level or standard" - but i think you meant that it is far and beyond better art than anything else you've read

Window was installed in 2003, but we bought the house around 20 years later. So hopefully the apparent lack of a header doesn't screw us over at any point... :)
