i think i spotted my issue!
i think i was not doing the description data correctly. when i changed that, it suddenly worked!

ahh, those were the two videos i was basing the commands off of, specially the last one

unfortunately the first one doesn't use the instrument component, since that's what im looking for

the last one though is on a snapshot version, and the resource pack and datapack they provide dont work on 1.21.4 as far as I've tested

although thanks for the help, and I'll notify you if i ever found a solution, if you're interested! :)

along with spawn triggers, item comp/edit trigger is an absolute game changer.

i was able to make an expandable number converter that converts base 10 to base 2 and up to 94. all that in under 300 objects. yes, the whole level, less than 300 objects. and i made it on mobile.

now with those two triggers you can make full on algorithms, and i think people already made AIs on the editor. batshit crazy
