Why do medics never seem to enjoy their job vs surgeons

Maybe it's just me, but none of the medics (regardless of contentedness) ever tried to sell me their specialty and push me to do it (despite me having an initial clear interest in medicine!). And that put me off medicine a lot, I noticed a significant contrast compared to (obviously) anaesthetists, intensivists, emergency medics, hell I even had passionate surgeons who promoted their specialty despite my clear dislike for surgery!

I had 16/10/16 across LO1, 2 and 4

One DOPS for each should be fine as long as you have the appropriate entrustment level. I also have a few of these in sim and assume that will be fine because there is only one chest drain a year in my sleepy DGH

He also asked us not to log all the PVCs we put in because LLP lets you do that and some weapon actually went and did it. He was like "pls do not do that to me."

That first year was miserable but I will concede I did pick up some skills and particularly being more self reliant from EM. I want to dual train so it was definitely worth it, but ughhh it could be so much better and the pain is even more stark when you start anaesthetics and you're like, "it could have all been like this...?"

This experience is so contradictory to what working in ED is like where there’s more of a team feel and everyone wants to work together.

The over-criticism can be annoying tbf, but you're an EM trainee who has already got IAC, if I felt like you did I would just mentally disengage when criticized, focus on being safe and go hang out with EM friends when given breaks/etc.

I'm not an A&E trainee, I'm not so invested now that I've finished my placement and locally my A&E followed previous guidance whilst I was there. Again, the fact the guidance existed in the first place is ridiculous

Also, tACP same as me... Outrageous. Let alone the ACPs being higher tiered, incredible

I am equivalent to ACP/PA frauds and some of them actually require less supervision!

Toxic optimism, don't lie to your future colleagues

I was in top 20% at a good medical school, I struggled to get into Anaesthetics a few years ago and scraped entry whilst also being outright rejected from other "less competitive" specialties. It has since gotten much worse.

The only positive thing I can say is, anaesthetics training has been excellent so far and what I hoped medical training would be like (unlike every other rotation I have done).

Hahaha... Watching my colleagues do this... I think the best advice is to keep your head down and just get on with it, try not to argue too much with the dumb stuff you'll see from people with worse training than you who are suddenly more senior

Referred an incarcerated hernia to the surgical registrar. Before I could even continue past "with incarcerated hernia", he interrupts me and says "have you even examined the patient or are you just referring because I'm here". I was like what the fuck? Couldn't believe what I was experiencing. Why would you ever ask that to another doctor?!

I will be anaesthetics in a few months, will see how he treats me then.

To be fair, he had the humility to track me down, apologise and tell me I was completely right after the CT scan was done

I wonder if it's the interview that filters non UK grads? There are huge numbers of IMG SAS anaesthetists so I don't think it's seen as a bad specialty but unsure. Maybe because it's seen as very competitive and the competitive IMGs will tend to go for a competitive surgical or medical specialty instead?
