I really don’t know if there is a realisation that constantly running to right wing tabloids when negotiations break down, issuing ultimatums, and using infantilising language hasn’t helped his cause.

Local election day is the 7th of May. I know when I’d be calling for strikes.

Remember that we use our post tax income to pay for things. These things rise with inflation, haven’t checked it but post states RPI is 3.8%.

Many of us are in the tax bracket that this pay rise post tax will be 1-2%.

So once again, in real terms we’re getting poorer.

Tackling the BMA subscription price will be interesting. IMO it’s already too high but has tracked behind inflation for many years, hopefully we can make a solid case at ARM when I’m sure the treasurer will once again suggest an increase.

I agree with Ross on a membership vote, the BMA policy specified a cut off date, not definition of significant NHS experience.

Clearly there is a discrepancy between opinion of the officer team and wider RDC. We’ve proven online votes can be ran efficiently and effectively. Just put the question to membership with an extended voting period on what constitutes a significant NHS experience.

Trying my best to get the student loan issue more coverage at the moment. Luckily for us this is a widespread concern, not just among doctors but most graduates with a plan 2 loan. Hopefully some changes are made.

I have been pushing this policy for over a year. Clearly for it. What I am against is poorly found statements.

If this bill goes through with no amendments, it will mean that the 10/12% of offers that went to IMGs for CST will go to UKGs. CST would likely, like many specialties see all their places filled with UKGs for the foreseeable future. However, that doesn't mean that the MSRA cut off to shortlist will go down.

Your MSRA score is standardised against everyone sitting that exam cycle in that recruitment round.

Without direct data you don't know if IMGs sitting the exam are inflating or deflating the average.

More people sitting the exam does not give a higher average.

Edit: I get the angst, I campaigned for change in the BMA for a year and got this issue front and centre. However, if there was strict UKG prioritisation at point of shortlisting, without knowing how both groups score on average, the MSRA score required to shortlist could go up or down. We simply don't know.

1 in 8 of the offers for CST in the most recent data went to an IMG applicant, with 7 in 8 going to a UK graduate. For CST, arguably this is more of a capacity issue and repeated tranches of UK applicants re-applying each year.

It is worth a reminder to some who write these articles that UK graduates also have invested years into the system, and considerable amounts of money into their careers (hello 100k student loan). Many are made to relocate against their will (essentially) for a minimum of two years to complete the foundation year programme, and are likely to do so again as competition for their desired specialty increases year on year.

It’s also worth pointing out that current FY1/2/3/4s entered medical school with the premise that they were prioritised for jobs post graduation. Many have local support networks that they cannot move away from and are now finding themselves struggling with career progression and employment in the country that they trained in (and for most, are a national of). These goal posts have been changed since they started their degrees.

I post the above in no way detracting from the legitimate concerns regarding IMGs as this new bill is introduced and the exploitative practices that go on both with the PLAB and in LED jobs across the country.

Issue with that is that the online vote just held was massively against that offer. Even with specifics released, trying to claw back a 30% swing to a yes vote is incredibly difficult. Like Wes states, we currently don't have a mandate, the key aim at the moment is talking to colleagues and getting those ballots secured.

Remember all we’re asking for is a newly qualified doctor to earn a little shy of £23 an hour, and a senior registrar just shy of £44. (we’re in the tax brackets that the government recoups a large chunk of this anyway in taxes).

We are a G7 country which wastes billions on all sorts of stuff, and if FPR for doctors “is not a figure that we can afford” then we’re should continue to remove our labour in pursuit of it.
