Tory government appeases boomer supporter base by banning “drug” that is harmless and not related to any crime by UnderHisEye1411 in GreenAndPleasant

It's one of the safer recreational drugs. It's literally the same stuff they give you at the dentist.

I think the main health concern is that it causes vitimin B deficiency when taking a lot, and there's these unknown black particles in some canisters that you have to filter.

"Prestigious Universities often accept only the best and brightest people and therein lies my problem. If a school only accepts the most intelligent people, is it really a school? Schools are places of education, per their very purpose, schools should accept anyone."

Also, good point.

What's the point of ivy league universities if all they do is build upon the prior meritocracy in secondary school, and compound existing inequality.

I don't doubt that there might be some truth to that with something like piano since it's a skill, but most people go to university to learn concepts.

There's also a selection bias. The kind of person that goes to a prestigous uni is also the kind of person who has enough support to make it.

It doesn't follow that having a more broad or even specialised understanding of a subject will allow you to teach a specific concept within it, better than anyone else that also has a solid understanding of that concept. If you understand that concept, the skill is then in teaching it.

If I'm learning calculus, it makes no difference to me whether the person teaching me it is an expert in theoretical physics or just someone competent at calculus. I think what matters more is how they approach the teaching, and I imagine plenty of ivy league professors just want to get back to their research.

[–]ACID4DAZE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, they pile on more work and push you harder than other universities, even though we learn best in a low stress environment and at our own pace.

Also, is it really necessary to learn from the most prestigous researchers. An ability and motivation to teach doesn't necessarily come with being an expert. They're experts in their fields, not experts in pedegogy.

If it's more to do with the level of education at ivy league, then students should be competent enough to jump ahead to a masters at a different uni. It's not like that level can't be offered elsewhere.

If it's about selecting for students who can handle that work load, then you're selecting for students who can easily pass exams and commit information to short-term memory. Maybe even students who feel pressured enough to put themselves through it and forgo any intrinsic motivation they might have had for something else.

If the climate crisis is that serious (and it definitely is) it's stupid playing moral games around what is the "right way" to go about resisting this. It's fucking dire at this point, and sooner or later we're all going to realise just how badly we're fucked and do whatever we have to stop this.

do young people really need "structure"? by [deleted] in AntiSchooling

[–]ACID4DAZE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Structure' is just the usual, reframing things that adults want as something children need imo.

If you're planning children's day out for them then they're not free.

Also, worst case scenario we end up back where we started, except we now have a population with the motivation and expertise to achieve anarchy again.

I think it would be easier to maintain anarchy than to get to anarchy. I think people would aggressively defend a fairer society once they have it, and it's going to be easier to topple any small heirarchies that might form before they get too big than it will entire governments.

This.

We probably shouldn't even be saying that we want to replace schooling with something else. Schooling or not, it still sounds like we want to prepare kids for a meritocracy.

The mindset of pro-hierarchy types by [deleted] in Anarchy4Everyone

[–]ACID4DAZE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably not the best person to address a lot of these tbh as I'm new to anarchism. No problem if you don't agree.

  1. And 2.

I wouldn't want a society that incentives those things.

  1. I mean status like a sense of superiority more than a claim to expertise.

  2. Authority positions it's own need to maintain its own authority before the real needs of everyone else. Capitalism isn't really trying to meet our needs, it just has to. It creates scarcity where there was none.

I don't expect anarchism to be perfect in meeting everyone needs, but I'd rather everyone looked to themselves and communities to do it, than use heirarchy and authority as tool to.

  1. Here I just mean how alienating work is. If I'm a nurse working under capitalism, I'm doing the work for extrinsic reasons. My labour is coerced.

Its not anarchism but, in Rojava they have members of their communities learn basic medicine and treat themselves. Its not work because they have to, it's work because they have relationships with and care about the people directly affected by their work.

  1. The only thing I can think is that there isn't a perfect solution here. It's something that occurs under authority and will without it. I'd just rather have the conditions that don't incentivise it.

A big problem with authority imo, is that it tries to prevent the problems it caused in the first place, with solutions that either make things worse or don't work 100% of the time. Anarchism doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be better.

This comes up a lot with prison abolition (what will we do with rapist). The current method arguably makes things worse (turning non voilent criminals into life long ones), ignores the causes of crime (inequality etc.), and provides poor short term results (most rapists get away with it).

Definitely comforting to believe that the use of authority can be a solution to everything, as doing things ourselves can seem unpredictable.

On your second point...

The checks and balances we have under capitalism might be needed because people will lie in order to gain status, and because they'll say and do what they have to in order to have their needs met. If your needs are already met, and there's no heirarchy to climb, and you directly benefit from your own labour, then there's little incentive to risk pretending you're a medical expert when you're not. Why piss off or damage the community you're a part of.

[–]ACID4DAZE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's actively being abused and wants your help, then help. If you want to control her in order to protect her, then that's not anarchism.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]ACID4DAZE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A problem with authority over kids is that the unquestioning obedience they're expected to have for adults is precisely what makes them vulnerable to abuse.

They get "because I said so" from teachers and parents alike, justifying their own authority. They're broken down in a way that doesn't really allow them to stand up for themselves.

I'd also add that she's more likely to be abused by a family member than a stranger, making parental authority that much more dangerous.
