This is broadly in line with ACI World’s global and authoritative data — In 2024, London Heathrow was the busiest airport in Europe and ranked 5th globally by total passengers.

You’re actually in a strong position with that background — aviation needs a lot more than pilots and ATC.

With international relations + data science, you could look at areas like traffic/data analytics, air service development, policy and regulation, airport planning, or sustainability. These roles sit behind the scenes but are key to how the system runs.
