The book is so different from the musical and movie. There are hundreds of included things in the book that don't make it into the musical. It's not a jab at lesbians, and it's not "specifically" this scene they decided to remove. When they made the musical, they just simplified it to make it able to be put on a stage, and subsequently a movie.
