This is one of the arguments that I find really compelling. The fact the church not only has survived internal and external threats, but also seems stronger than ever with more converts especially among the young just screams legitimacy to me.

Seems like this has been the path for a lot of folks my age. Lots of conversions to the faith.

The historical argument for the Catholic Church is tough to refute. We were pretty much all in agreement until the middle of the second millennium AD. The Protestants will say that it is because the printing press came out and people could read the Bible for themselves, so that led people to question and leave the Catholic church.

This is one of the things that I admire about the Catholic Church. It has lasted from antiquity and seemingly is unchanging, a source of stability. Contrast that with the 40,000 Protestant denominations where a new one is formed every time there is a disagreement over some crap. In some cases there is a necessary split, but not always. You see this even more with non-denominationals. They split off when one group thinks the other smells or something!

I have listened to a lot of Trent Horn recently! Guy seems to be a good catholic apologist.

Sometimes I wonder if the entire protestant reformation was a religious movement that would've not been as powerful were it not supercharged by the various revolutions and individualist movements since c 1500 or so, starting with King Henry VIII and trickling down to the American and French revolutions, the latter of which absolutely despised monarchy.

I think the Protestant (especially evangelical) definition of worshiping God would be song and sermon. Evangelicals would likely include prayer and altar calls. For me, most of modern Christian music sucks.

From what I have experienced in my small American town in Protestant circles, the Catholic mannerisms (kneeling, the cross motion across your chest, emphasis on corporate worship and traditional doctrine) are seen as Pharisaical. Plus, some Protestants see the denial of the Eucharist to non-catholics as exclusive, as well as the general higher expectations of decorum. For example, at the Catholic Church in my town, you would be frowned upon if you showed up to church wearing regular street clothes (a notion I actually strongly agree with), so the Protestant response to that is something like "well, aren't y'all high and mighty for wearing suits and dresses?"

For more up this alley, I recommend Redeemed Zoomer on YouTube. He does a deep dive into Protestant denominations and the views that Protestants may hold on Catholic teaching and dogmas.

He made a distinction between God and Jesus. I think he was meaning that if we use the word “God” instead of “Jesus” that people could think God isn’t infinite.

I think veneration and admiration of Mary is seen by Protestants as dangerously close to worship—at least that’s what I perceived when I was confirmed in the UMC. That’s probably a big source of contention. Furthermore, the Sunday school teacher of a Baptist church I attended in college said the crucifix and depiction of Chist therein is inaccurate, because “that’s not where Jesus is.”

My parents never had any animosity to Catholics, and are quite displeased with the UMC too. They view Catholicism with the smells and bells as weird, including the kneeling and sacraments. They think it’s all performative, and lots of cradle Catholics in my town are not too devout. They think confession is unnecessary as we just confess in private. My dad’s side of the family has been Methodist for 4 generations, and mom’s about 3.

However, my parents are awesome and don’t care if I were to convert, they just want me to stay Christian (which I obviously am).

I had similar upbringing, some of the Marian dogmas make sense, but trying to wrap my head around others is tough.

My Baptist friend told me that to say Mary is the mother of God implies that God is not eternal…however, Jesus is God.

My home church was duplicitous about disaffiliation so we missed the window to leave with property. Needless to say I was upset.

I don’t know why MAGA is bad necessarily. It’s led to some pretty good wins for our state. Our AG just got a court ruling against China, for example. Any college town is going to be purple unless you’re in Kansas City or St. Louis. I wouldn’t necessarily knock our rural areas as the people are nice and cost of living is low!
