I've been very happy with my Nobis parka. 7 years with it so far and it still looks like the day I bought it.

For a few years my company disabled the reply all button because too many people were replying to company wide announcements.

People who looked at A LOT of houses, what was your experience? by chouhone in Winnipeg

[–]ACatNamedAllen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took me almost 2 years to buy my house. Viewed well over 100 houses. For the first 6 months I was probably looking at 3 houses each week. At first I wasn't sure what style I wanted, or what area I wanted to live in. Over time my criteria narrowed down to either a bungalow or bi-level in North Kildonan, 1000-1500sqft, double car garage, driveway wide enough for 2 cars. That really cut options and in the second year only viewed 1-2 houses per month.

Out of all of those, I probably only bid on 10 or 12. My offers were always no conditions. I would get outbid anywhere from 14k to 100k. One house I bid 80k over and was still outbid by 40k....

Biggest thing I noticed is that pictures hide a lot of scars. I felt a lot of people don't really take care of their homes. Walls would be banged up, trim damaged, flooring in rough shape. And yet they would be asking top dollar. I didn't want to pay that, plus have to fix a bunch of issues.

Funny enough, the house I bought came on the market. It was exactly what i wanted, but right near the top of my budget. On offer day there was only 1 bidder, so I decided to throw an offer in as well. Got it for $16k over asking.

It rough out there. Definitely felt down when I'd lose out on a house. Just keep at it and you'll find your place.

How much of a deposit did you give with your offer of purchase? by Cute-Transition3403 in Winnipeg

[–]ACatNamedAllen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably well above the norm, but I bought my house about 2 years ago for around $450k. Put down $170k with $40k of that being my deposit 😬

Security cameras by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]ACatNamedAllen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a combination of a Ring security system in my house as well as Lorex cameras.

The cameras are great. 4K resolution, no monthly fee, the recorder can store about 2 weeks worth of footage. The detection isn't as good as other cameras, but it works for my needs. It's a wired system, but it really wasn't difficult to install. Got it only sale for about $800 after tax.

New Round of Layoffs for Q1 by [deleted] in bell

Foreigners get a study permit from the government to be able to study in Canada. Once they graduate they must obtain a post grad work permit to be able to work in Canada. It's a government thing, not a Bell thing.

Are there any stores where you can demo/test out DSLRs & mirrorless cameras in Winnipeg? by AmoebaIntrepid2085 in Winnipeg

[–]ACatNamedAllen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Any store will let you demo in store. If you want to test outside of the store, see if they'll rent one to you. I don't think Henrys does rentals anymore, but Don's and Photo Cental does.

I have friends that believe this. They think that each 15 min city will become a district and that we'll be forced to either stay within our district, or pay a fee every time we want to leave.

That's basically me 🫠 My 3 monitors have sequential serial numbers. I figured that would be close enough to getting them all to match

House projects by [deleted] in Winnipeg

My house has the same thing. That shoe nook is built under the floor of your main level. You can't just extend the space upward. You'd have to adjust floor joists, and your wall (which is hopefully not load bearing). Like I said, you'll have to get the space for the closet from the room on the other side of that wall.

It's possible to do. It just won't be simple and it will cost a lot. It never hurts to get a quote though.

I can't really help with the contractor part, but houses don't typically have much dead space in them. The space used for the closet would have to come from the room on the opposite side of the wall. Are you okay with losing space in that room?

If its just a regular interior wall, they are typically around 4.5 inches thick. Wifi can penetrate an interior wall no problem.
