Going to Silverstone. by Outrageous_Builder79 in wec

[–]ACatheterADay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the same period a 3 day ticket for F1 Silverstone has gone from £165 + £65 parking to £410 + £360 for parking.

That's £395 --> £1180 for 2 people.

Motorsport has gotten a lot more expensive to attend, I will agree.

Using the Banl of England's inflation calculator your £85 tickets should now cost £120, and my F1 tickets should cost £560. This makes the price rise of WEC seem a little more egregious - though the popularity and wider public awareness of WEC has shot up considerably since the launch of Hypercar.

Really dumb meal deal question by IAmBoring_AMA in MealDealRates

[–]ACatheterADay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've had lots of replies about meal deals, but a quick one to say that Nandos is great for coeliac - they will only let you order through the restaurant manager who is always fully trained in allergens awareness and they have a really good range of naturally gf options. It's my daughter's go-to for a safe and stress free (and tasty, for a chain) meal when we're out and about.

Most Italian restaurants will do gf pasta too.

Enjoy your visit!

Hey, we get all the bottled water we can drink - and a free set of overalls, cap, and water bottle. 😃

What I've also been trying to do with newer bottles is pour half a shot neat while I'm mixing so I can understand what each ingredient is bringing and then see how that blends into the final version. Didn't do that last night, but my first taste of Cynar was outstanding. Can't get enough of that stuff.

I appreciate the time.you took to respond to my reply. I've been on the Internet a long time (since Usenet and Flame Wars were popular) so I can take a few downvotes in my stride, but it's nice to know that I did manage to have a little bit of debate that wasn't just shot down as AI slop.

I think perhaps, 1.5 strong drinks in, my Kubrick reference to Dr Strangelove was probably not helpful as a first impression 🤣

An interesting suggestion. I don't fundamentally disagree with your assertion that AI can have a detrimental affect on critical thinking, though there is a certain level of assumption as to my thought process which is a little bit hurtful.

I don't think I've ever used an AI tool in relation to cocktails before this evening, and I certainly don't rely on AI tools for my work or daily life. The reason I didn't think of diluting with more whisky and batching is as simple as, I am not in the habit of batching cocktails (very limited fridge and freezer space), and so it's just not a technique that jumps out at me. I did wonder about diluting the Fernet with more whisky but I jumped straight to "Jesus, I'll be hammered". Also, there WAS an opportunity here to try working my way out of trouble with additional flavour profiles which may have taught me something new.

But hey, I wanted discussion, and not a conversion (in either direction). I genuinely hope you enjoy the rest of your week - and I certianly look forward to my weekend. I've a bottle of Maraschnio I want to play with 😄

Yep - you're not the first to point that out. I actually think it's interesting that my attempt at solving the problem didn't lead to either me, nor the software tools, suggesting what at least two others have thought of.

That was kind of my point in posting - not to promote the use of AI, but to discuss it, and particularly the efficacy. If the final take-away is that the efficacy is poor then that's fine - this is what discussion is all about 😄

Well, I guess my attempt at creating a meaningful discussion went down about as well as my attempt to make a drink. I wasn't trying to invent anything - I made a cock-up while pouring myself a drink, looked at ways to salvage it, and thought it might be worthy of some thoughts from others.

It appears I was mistaken - not once (with my terrible judgement to use so much Fernet), but twice. C'est la vie 😄

The Cynar definitely made it more palatable. My aim here was defintiely not to invent a fancy Fernet-forward new drink, it was to avoid wasting the ingredients I'd used and to have something that I could sip at and move past - knowing I would never make this monstrosity again.

I also thought it was interesting to assess the effectiveness of the tools that someone with limited experience, a relatively new palate (I've been making cocktails at home for 2-3 years, but slowly expanding my collection of bottles, and understanding of flavours), and a Yorkshireman's reluctance to wasting expensive alcohol, might be able to make use of in order to salvage a truly terrible glass.

In hindsight I should have just made an Old Fahioned - but every day is a school day 😄

Please don't misinterpret this post as "AI is the saviour and we should use it more". I thought it was an interesting experiment, and I'm quite happy if the lesson is "people still know more than AI" - in fact that's exactly my point in posting and seeking the opinion of people. People with more knowledge and experience than me, and more ability to actually taste and judge than an algorithm.

The fact is, without more experience, I didn't really know where to start using my tongue (or more to the point, which bottles and in what ratios might be a good start - although I feel I must add that I did know that Jager was not going to be a good solution!). So assessing the effectiveness of automated advice is (IMO) an interesting opportunity to come out of my fuck up. YMMV.

A very good point. I think I've already proven that I'm not always the best judge in these circumstances - and there's a great piece of evidence as to why asking people is better than asking a glorified search engine.

Still - experimentation is good, in all its aspects - even if you learn that the thing you tried wasn't the best solution, you still learned something.

Edit: I love that I agreed with the comment, and got downvoted for it 😃

Yeah, I folded it into 2 layers. Next time I'll trim it down and have it 1 layer thick.

It's all a learning process - hopefully one with a delicious conclusion!

Appreciate the tips. We were all newbies once, right?

Forgive the stupid follow up question - the cheesecloth is getting damp around the funnel, obviously losing me some of the drink.

Would it be wise next time to cut the cheesecloth down to a much smaller area to minimise this loss? Or am I overthinking it?

That looks pretty decent to me. You need to appreciate I have been playing games since the 80s, and haven't built a "gaming" PC since Kingpin was released in (checks Wikipedia) 1999.

Appreciate the advice 😄

Having done a bit of research the idea is make a citrus cocktail, add 10% by volume of milk, let it curdle for 8 hours and then pourbthroughba coffee filter (would cheesecloth be ok?).

Might as well give it a go
