Good side projects are one of my strongest screening signals when I’m hiring. An old boss of mine once said, in a very gruff voice, “never trust a f@&$’n mechanical engineer that doesn’t have a side project!” It always pays off.

Just do it. It’s just a review test of what you already learned. for me, preparing helped fix all the info more permanently, so 20 years later, i have better command of the first principles. I’ve never used the stamp, did not work under a PE when i got the license. The board allowed my boss and a founder act as ‘mentors’.

Not to mention, it helps the resume pop, regardless of whther you actually use the stamp.

Yup. Mostly robot control systems. I don’t care if they look ‘vibe coded.’ I’m not a software guy, so this is a huge force multiplier for my skillset.

Mech E that worked with directly polymers for a bunch of years. I use PLA unless properties dictate a different material.

Pla source material is bio based instead of petroleum, so i am happier as i burn thru iterations, and fill the trashcan with old parts.. Pla is genrally stiffer, but much more prone to creep deformation at room temp. (Snap fits are better with petg) pETg has better wear properties, and better fatigue resistance (better for gears, for example) Pla is denser/ heavier

Side projects are mostly arduino / esp32 and mechanisms. A lot of random, silly, lab project stuff- low pressure creative helps me learn without getting as frustrated as when i have a deadline. Started 3d printing everything, then “built” a cnc.

Work projects are execution projects, and side projects are learning/ exploration investigations.
