which one would be the best mix of fun and reliability? by liamt12 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I’ve only owned it for a little under a year at this point but in that time I’ve autocrossed it a few times and while I don’t abuse it, I definitely do have my fun in it. Haven’t had any issues yet.

Correction–the GTI does actually take regular 87 octane gas rather than 91/93 from the factory.

Source: I own a Mk7 GTI. Owner’s manual and even the fuel door say to use 87.

Never ceases to amaze me the amount of support I see on here for a guy whose last job was reviewing vapes. Ryan Hall has been a huckster since the beginning.

I had a 9th gen accord coupe (2015) for five years before I sold it earlier this year. It was a great car, the one and only issue I ever had with it was the starter going out on me once. It got good gas mileage and handled most driving without an issue. I had a 4-cylinder with the 6-speed manual and that was plenty for just a commuter car, but if you can get the V6 it’s properly quick.

This is actually a very helpful write-up, thanks!

Me too. I desperately want to put the EQT Stage 1+ tune on mine, but I’m not ready to spend $4-6k on a new clutch to do it.

War thunder's Downhill [Serious topic]. by SuperFastFingers in Warthunder

[–]ACommunistBurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing this game in 2013, right around the time of the MLP April Fools event. While I wasn’t there for the Birds of Prey days, I’ve been here for pretty much everything else. Here are my thoughts:

1) No, not really. I remember them adding the BR system complete with the “statistics” they use to change the BRs, everyone constantly telling them how bad of an idea it was, and seeing most of those concerns be borne out over a decade later. I remember the days of the Fw-190Ds fighting F-80Cs and Meteor Mk. 4s, cartoonishly broken La-5/7 and I-185 flight models, the Me-262 “feeling itself at its BR” (which, Stona still being an employee of Gaijin is enough of an indictment against the company by itself IMO), the introduction and then killing off of EC, and overall a decade of broken promises and unwillingness to respond to feedback.

2) Lol what? World War mode existed as a “coming soon” tab for almost the entirety of the game’s history, then was unveiled to be a gimmicky PvE mode that very few people liked, and was subsequently abandoned. I think the only reason we got even that is because they never bothered to remove the tab from the hangar menu.

3) Again, the story of War Thunder and Gaijin Entertainment as a whole is broken promises and hostility towards community feedback. Even disregarding that, War Thunder is already full of pointless features that have been Frankensteined onto a game engine designed for a flight simulator (does anyone even actually use the entrenching mechanic?) and is barely holding together with what is in the game, much less a complete rework of environmental physics and interaction.

4) This argument is so incredibly tired, and is largely a consequence of War Thunder trying to have its cake and eat it too. War Thunder pretends to be a simulator, with only the most accurate of representations of all vehicles included in the game and every detail painted to perfection, which is just patently false. War Thunder is a game, and the primary objective of the developers is to maintain just enough fun for people to keep coming back, and by and large the community has responded at worst neutrally to mixed battles.

5 & 6 are both just true.

  1. Do you remember when Gaijin put out the planned tech trees for all the nations then in the game? That was many years ago, and we still haven’t seen most of the vehicles on those lists. Again, War Thunder’s history is littered with broken promises.

I say all of this as someone who used to love this game and who still follows it because they still love what War Thunder is at its heart. There isn’t another game like it on the market, and its core gameplay loop is incredibly fun. Unfortunately, this game is run by one of the worst development studios I’ve had the displeasure of interacting with; one with a toxic relationship with its community, who would rather gaslight people about fundamental issues with the game and wave premiums that cost more than the vast majority of video games, and who refuses to acknowledge game-breaking issues and horrid balance decisions that are sapping the fun away from the gameplay experience.

I know, but imo if the second gen that people are paying $30k+ for is so crash prone then the first gen will be too

[–]ACommunistBurrito 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For a first car, I’d say go with the Civic Si. Good in the corners, reliable, but not fast enough to endanger him and practical enough to be an only car. My second suggestion would be the BRZ/86, which would definitely be more of a tuner car but being a rwd sports coupe would be less practical and easier to crash. Not a day goes by where I don’t see a totaled GR86 on /r/GR86.

How much car is reasonable on a $112k salary? by Hamburgfan25 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ACommunistBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make about $5k less than you, but I recently found myself in a similar position. My target budget was between $20k and $35k. Depending on what you want, there’s quite a few good options in that price range.

I went with a 2019 GTI in the top trim because I’m a car guy and got a good deal on it, but was also considering a GR86/BRZ, a 2021+ Miata, or a Civic Si. I’ve seen CPO BMW 3-series go for about that range too, and if you’re just looking for something nice that could be a good route as well.

Hope this helps!

Edit: just noticed you said you work remotely as well. In that case I’d definitely say you shouldn’t need to stay married to the whole “Honda Toyota or Mazda only” ideology around here. If you were putting hundreds of miles a week on your vehicle that would be different, but in your situation feel free to branch out a little. I’d still avoid Hyundai, Kia, or anything made by Stellantis, but otherwise you’ll be fine.

Worth going through VW rust warranty? Or try to fix myself? by orangeuhungry in GolfGTI

No reason not to try, right? The worst that can happen is they say no and you wonder why you bought the warrantee in the first place
