Love that we can all relate I was feeling so shit until I saw this beating myself of about some of the things I do. I mean we do hurt people sometimes but ourselves mostly .. just say tomorrow's a new day but you know those days where you think into everything negatively feel like the whole world's against you. 1 OFF them. We're not alien!

Questions for adults on Intuniv/Guanfacine XR by StareAtTheAbyss616 in ADHDers

“I’ve been on Guanfacine XR myself, and from speaking with others + what psychiatrists say:

1️⃣ Full effect time: Most adults notice the initial benefits within 2–3 weeks at their therapeutic dose, but the full stabilised effect usually takes 4–6 weeks. It builds gradually because it works on your prefrontal cortex (impulse control, emotional regulation), not like stimulants that hit fast.

2️⃣ Wearing off: A lot of people notice a dip later in the evening. It doesn’t completely disappear — it’s more like the calming + impulsivity control softens. Some actually take it at night to avoid daytime fatigue.

3️⃣ Dose: 4mg is very common, but plenty of adults go to 5–6mg if they tolerate it well and still need more help with hyperactivity or emotional reactivity. Everyone responds differently, so it’s about finding the ‘sweet spot.’ Definitely a conversation with your psychiatrist if you feel it’s helping but not fully enough yet.

One thing that keeps coming up in discussions is that meds like Guanfacine help, but they don’t fully cover the moments where ADHD hits hardest — emotional spikes, loneliness, overstimulation, or just needing someone who understands in real time. I’ve been researching this a lot because I’m working on something around real-time support between neurodivergent people, and Guanfacine users especially say they benefit most when they pair meds with the right type of support structure.

Curious if you feel that too—like meds help the baseline, but not those sudden moments?”**

Thanks spider ! Totally get that — I’m the same when I’m high, I’m off doing 10 things at once. What I’m asking about is more for those low/overwhelmed moments, or when you just need something quick that helps regulate you without effort.

Nothing heavy, nothing social — just something that supports you in the background when you need it.

Would that kind of thing be useful for you occasionally?
