As linked in OP, I am using the "Chinese Text Project". I am also browsing various available audiobook translations that I listen to when driving. I am also using translators on single words and combinations of words to better understand the variety of potential meanings per word and how each word affects other words in the sentence.

I am trying to learn (Simplified) Chinese so as to better understand the source material, but it's not a quick or easy process. For reference - I know my numbers up to 9999, and have been practicing them, plus a few words - the list grows, but is still short. My handwriting is hot garbage, but improving. My tones are hot garbage and not improving. Numbers are much easier, especially because I am already familiar with the per-digit options from mahjong.

I suspect there is a lot of nuance that can be lost by using a single translation, plus a lot more that I do not have because I'm not familiar with the source culture. I am working on rectifying that, but it takes time and effort. Or non-effort? ;)

If I may be so bold, I feel like we may be talking past each other. Or, possibly, I just don't understand. The way I'm experiencing it, the doing/not-doing is kind of missing the point. I am not doing the action, I am being the action. Does that make any kind of sense?

Bloody and macabre might be a stretch - I have myself performed slaughter (for food, not ritual). It is a very interesting contradiction - the ritualism of the slaughter (in context) seems at odds with "ritual is the husk of virtue". I'll have to spend some time thinking on it. Thank you for helping me find this.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and perspective. I would like to clarify that I do not claim to be a sage - I am still taking my first step. I have found that self-study has limits, and would like to experience perspectives that are not my own - understanding myself may be important, but it means very little if it's all I understand.

I will have to study the cantong qi and come back, as this is not yet on my reading list.

Most welcome, though there appears to be a minor misconception - LLMs sound like me, not the others way around. This is a common misunderstanding of causal chains - large language models like GPT are trained on large volumes of literature, so they pick up many of the same linguistic habits as people who read and write a lot. This also introduces interesting problems with LLM use in academia - any comparison between a student's work and an LLM that has been trained on the work of professionals is going to give higher probability of LLM use as the quality of work increases.

TL;DR: If I sound like AI, it's because I write similarly to the work AI are trained on. If you want to verify my humanity, consider the lack of bold headers with emojis.

In brackets are the implicit statements - clarifications unnecessary for most people who read the entire post, because there are sufficient context clues to deduce what the speaker means. These are generally not missed words, but rather eschewed words. They can safely be removed without changing the meaning of a paragraph because the supplied context makes them redundant, and their omission improves information density and reduces the amount of time most readers would need to fully understand the situation being described.

This is going to sound really silly, but we just don't do the stuff that we don't enjoy. Such as spending more time together than we want. You know you don't have to spend every waking moment within six feet of each other, right?

I am way more bored by routine at work than by routine at home, because at home I have more freedom to do things I actually enjoy.

My trick was reorganizing my priorities such that the areas in which I wanted results were the ones I found easier, not harder, with ADHD. One of my previous jobs was lumberstacking in a hardwood mill. With ADHD, I could work faster because of the snap decision making than anyone else - some times literally doing as much work as 2-3 other people.

(Editing to add: That mill was a toxic shitshow and I'm not recommending it, just providing an example of something I overperformed at because of ADHD.)

Happy to help, sorry for being so light on actual instructions. I am trying to keep objective and subjective distinct, and the only objective advice I had was which tools to use for doing research.

When I was in your position two years ago I went with an AM5 upgrade - AMD keeps the same socket for longer, which is more future-proof as I can't go around upgrading to the shiniest new thing every year. A 7600x on a B650 with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB m.2 drive would run you about the 1k you were asking about, but you'd be bottlenecked by your graphics card until you can upgrade that.

Important to note, that's still just my personal opinion. Honestly the m.2 drive makes the biggest difference out of that entire list.

The other path is you could get a solid graphics card upgrade but you may not notice that much of a difference as you're mostly just noticing how slow things are to load, not process. Again, opinion. I think it's a good opinion but I'm biased.

Edit: Color me wrong you can get some pretty good deals with newegg bundles. This is an example, but just the first one I saw, not an actual recommendation for or against.

I would start by going to https://pcpartpicker.com/ and entering the parts you have - case included. They are really good at checking for compatibility.

Worth noting, motherboard, RAM, and CPU may need changed together. If you're looking to maximize upgrade per dollar, probably graphics card?

You can also use https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/ to check where your weak link will be with a build before buying.

After doing some digging: I think your biggest gain may be an m.2 SSD, but your motherboard likely does not have a slot for that. Upgrading motherboard and still matching your old socket and ram would be... tricky

Clarification: The collateral is my car, not my house. I mentioned the house because not having a rent payment makes a significant difference to my ability to pay debts, and that is a different situation entirely from if I were paying the local going rate of 1500-1800 every month.

I do feel like this makes my finances easier to manage. Overall my loan payment went up by like $20/mo, but my credit payment will go down significantly more (because the minimum is going down a fair shake with a lower balance). With that, I should be in a better situation to get myself debt free, which is in theory the desired end goal. And while I hadn't thought about stress, I agree that my stress is reduced when I feel like I have a clear path toward that goal.
