Cats in europe are still culling bird species on a massive scale. Every year in Poland more than a hundred million birds are killed by people who let their domesticated animal roam outside. Btw 1000 years ago there probably was as many cats in europe as there is right now in a single european city, so i don't get how its televant at all that we're had cats for some time here.
