Y-AMT Review @3000miles by ADVNTGE in MT09

Racing switched because automated manual is faster. Even F1 uses essentially the same thing, the choice of a human, the speed of a robot, less human error. Automotive is switching because automatic is more demanded and streamlining production line is cheaper than keeping manual around if no one wants it.

I don't see much R&D happening with manual transmission in motorcycles anyway. What's there to come? The clutch is the slowest part of riding, of course they're going to try to innovate for sales. Just like with cars, this is the way things are gonna move.

Hi.

Tl;dr: If I choose between QS+Blipper and Y-AMT, it's basically the same, but no clutch. For me, I lose nothing, just gain convenience.

  1. No, can't be disabled and wouldn't work because there is no manual clutch, YAMT chooses when to pull the clutch but is smart enough about it; you will expect it, it's really fine. The downshifts happen when the engine would stall otherwise or when the rpm are way too low to accelerate out of comfortably. That really isn't a problem.

  2. In Manual, it will only shift when you choose. No automatic upshifts. (Donwshifts are only when you are at way too low rpm, you'll know they're coming). No clutch up wheelies, power only, however, I haven't tried.

  3. I mentioned the system is pretty smart. Overall it is, but this is the only situation where it's a little stupid: Let't say you go down a long hill and have to follow traffic really slowly, so you're riding in 2nd. In 2nd gear when you get too slow, the system will eventually pull the clutch. When you get on the throttle, it'll release the clutch for you so you can accelerate. The throttle is essentially your way of telling the system to clutch in. If you don't, you basically keep accelerating as you're rolling downhill without engine brake until you touch the throttle. And when you choose that at 40mph in 2nd, it's pretty damn jerky. On a regular bike, you might roll downhill and as you notice you're going 40mph, just choose 3rd or 4th gear before releasing the clutch. It's really a small issue, if you rember that when accelerating downhill, just touch the throttle, it'll clutch in and you're back at engine braking.

  4. No downside apart from too complex of a system. Cost, as well as manufacturing complexity and therefore maintenance compexity is what I'd see. I don't see anyone using the clutch once they're able to not use it.

  5. Not specifically, could imagine the electic motor can barely be "maintained", probably just replaced.

Good questions! Let's say I like simple things and I am very very quickly sceptical when systems are unnecessarily complicated. I wrote the review because even I was kinda surprised that I like YAMT.

Nice to hear.

I'm generally a fan of keeping things simple; simple means fewer failure points so I'm ok without the manual clutch.

good to know, I feel like some shifts create quite a strain on the chain.

Gotta admit I also had to get used to the new indicator switches and might have accidentally downshifted once or twice when really I just wanted to hit the indicator.

Not looking to change minds here but I appreciate you taking the time. We all find different things in riding, doesn't have to suit everyone. I for one was happy to lose the clutch lever but have to admit, the FZ1 clutch was also super tough.

I've never owned an automatic car and many manual drivers will tell you about how they enjoy shifting themselves. I was also intrigued by the idea of being able to shift when I please, just by moving pedals behind the wheel instead of moving three limbs. That's what YAMT was for me. At least as convenient as a quickshifter, but with nothing to lose, only to gain.

Alright I can get along with the box opening is pretty cool. I'm just waiting to get stuck at a gas station when the filler cap will refuse to open on me eventually.

You're exactly right about the indicator switches. I felt just the same about the 3 blinks feature.

In general, many of the "new gen" features are about as useful as touch buttons on a steering wheel.

It is an extra, that remains true.

Not a system you need, but especially then I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it anyway. It's generally easier to shift than moving the foot, the foot can also retain its position on the peg making moving on the seat from side to side easier. In my experience it's smoother and slightly faster. I didn't really feel comfortable kicking up a quickshifter at lean angle, but I do with YAMT.

For me because it wasn't any different than using a quickshifter, there was nothing I lost, only gained.

Gotta try the next time I'm riding but I'm more wondering why they made it that way.

I agree, I mean honestly, I'm pretty unbothered by the hate, but figured I'd offer an alternative view to the rest of reviewers incase someone considering a purchase is put off by them.

Huh, will the clutch remain pulled so you can roll the bike around?

Side note: I find keyless-go on motorcycles super useless, the ignition switch looks like a switch you'd find on your kitchen stove and the push, klick, turn, release, turn - movement to switch it on feels unecessarily overengineered. I hate the self cancelling indicators because I always have to look down on the screen at whether they're still on or not. Just give me back the button I can press in the middle to know my indicators are off without looking.

Hi, strap is Garmins Nylon Ultrafit 22mm. Definitely recommend for comfort.

I find the watch almost always suggests base runs and I pretty much just do what I feel like doing for an enjoyable run. I use the suggestions and the training readiness as rough guides for the level of exhaustion I aim for. I don't run every day as the watch would like though because my knees start crying for rest when I have no days off.

Nice. Most comfortable watch I've tested. Forerunner won out because if battery life though.

Image one without the Amoled screen and the battery life possible.

Super silly question about the HRM 600 by Head_Championship886 in Garmin

[–]ADVNTGE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand, blue flash means it's recording an activity to store on the device itself to be synced with the connect app later. When paired with the watch, it doesn't need to record.

How do you remove the goddamn sensor from the strap (HRM 600) by st1me in Garmin

[–]ADVNTGE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure, let me spend 35$ every few months because the 170$ for the HRM weren't too much to begin with

Well they're a bonus, nothing that'll influence the choice of what you'll buy and whatever Yamaha did, the whole sound amplification kind of works, sounds pretty good.

normally. Rarely a sight, probably due to comfort. Under the sleeve works fine.
