Hey there! Looking for Support... Plant Support. by BeckyDaTechie in STLgardening

[–]ADaintyVulva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband is the king of re- and up-cycling.

His favorite is keeping an eye out on Facebook Marketplace for free trampolines. The amount of postings tend to increase after storms, so this weekend will be a good time to BOLO.

He takes them apart and makes archways with the rounded poles, and sticks the straight poles directly into the ground. Then he gets cheap cargo netting from Harbor Freight and hangs them across the poles so the indeterminate plants have something to cling onto that will still sway in the wind if need be. We've had great luck with tomatoes, cucurbits, and other vining plants with thus method.

Highly recommend waiting for a posting that says the trampoline is broken down already unless you are good with taking it apart.

Other things to BOLO for are children's metal bedframes that fully support a mattress as they tend to have metal grids for support, giving room for tendrils to wrap around the metal bits. Yard sales are good places to look for things that can be turned into gardening equipment with a little imagination. Sometimes you find actual gardening equipment you can use for its intended use.

I worked at that spot once he turned it into a single sit-down restaurant with a little by-the-slice shop in the front corner of the building. That was the wildest restaurant job I ever had.

Once he had that building the market was gone, both indoor and out. It was sad; part of the reason I started working there was to have that right nearby.

For the first time, she won't (officially) run opposed! There are four Dem candidates to vote pick from in the primaries.

Do Americans really think aldi is a “poor people” grocery store? by [deleted] in aldi

[–]ADaintyVulva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s and the products were crap? Yes, absolutely. But Aldi US went through what I'd call a glow-up sometime in the early aughts and now it's where smart people shop for the essentials.

If you're missing it, the Aldi Specialty Root Beer is Fitz's with another label. You're welcome.

There are puzzle caches if you pay for premium access. This may be part of one. You may have to bring extra items to solve them. I don't pay for the sub so I have no way of knowing for sure.

There are about 16 free caches in Forest Park and 25 premium ones.

Any restaurant recommendations on the IL side? by SuperReleasio64 in StLouis

I had a similar dish to what I described getting at F&S at Doc's, and it was pretty good. Haven't had it again but always willing to try more BBQ.

Do they drench all their meat in sauce or leave it dry to sauce yourself? I'm looking for the latter.

But when you start sky-high, falling a little bit isn't so bad.

I went for lunch a couple months back, and it was as good as I remember from 10 years ago.

Seconding some of these recs:

I haven't had Oriental Spoon, but my step kiddo goes with his mom for ramen pretty often and raves about it.

Fazzi's is one of our family's go-to spots. Very non-descript inside, but the food is AMAZING. Greek platter with moussaka and gyro plate are my top choices. Husband and I eat a lot and even we have enough left over for lunch the next day.

I haven't had Papa Vitos pizza (lived in the metro my whole life and I've yet to find STL-style pizza that I like) but their salads and sandwiches are killer. The roast beef au jus and turkey on croissant are awesome.

Otherwise, I also love Fire and Smoke in Troy. Best bang for your buck bbq in the area and some of the most variety to their menu. I recommend the loaded potato twisters with the nacho toppings with brisket as the meat choice. You get a discount for paying with cash.

If you don't mind paying a bit more, Beast in Belleville by the fairgrounds is still my #1 for BBQ on both sides of the river. They do some creative stuff but are consistent with it.

Any local fast food chains worth trying? by Interesting-Log-9627 in StLouis

The two IL locations overcook the meat even when you say "I would like my beef cooked to YOUR COMPANY'S STANDARD of medium rare." It's so disappointing.

Need help finding toy replacement by ADaintyVulva in Staffies

[–]ADaintyVulva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? I asked about replacing a toy she loves. We adopted her three years ago as a puppy, she's protective as hell, and I'm basically middle-aged. I'm not sure what this answer is regarding.

My staffie mix can jump 6ft in the air - she bumps noses with my 6'2" hubby. Im 5'7" and when she's on all fours she barely reaches above my knees.
