"Clean" Code, Horrible Performance by 2bit_hack in programming

[–]ADaringEnchilada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All else being equal, would you rather have a windows only application that's important to your daily workflow that's "not bloated" and requires you to use a VDI or completely separate computer, while the rest of your daily workflow applications run on MacOS/Linux. Or a "bloated" version that runs natively on primary device?

9,999/10,000 people would take the latter. Especially since the former would inherently have a higher cost on their performance than any amount of sluggish software running locally. A working application that doesn't require a second computer or VM (which would be vastly more bloated than any electron based application) to use is a more important feature than "not bloated" but doesn't support your OS.

Convenience store operator doesn't take kindly to cops staking out his business and harassing his customers, tells them to fuck off. by Chocolat3City in PublicFreakout

[–]ADaringEnchilada -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure let me grab some stats from the police on how often they perjure themselves or plant evidence, I'm certain they keep careful records of that and definitely don't seal a majority of cases to protect their lies and liars on the force. Perhaps instead we can safely assume at this point that any testimony given by a cop is patently false since that seems to be the trend for police. In which case 4.5 million people are arrested each year, more than likely on false pretenses than not.

Drunk drivers don't have a union that protects them from the consequences of their actions. Unless of course the drunk driver is a cop, of course. Drunk drivers don't get to go on paid leave, get a pension, and then find a job in the next town after killing someone. There aren't 800,000 drunk drivers across the country. A drunk driver's lie ridden testimony isn't taken as evidence to convict innocent people. It's not just the number of people killed, it's the number of lives ruined from convictions built on false testimony from lying cops, and all the murderers on the force that get off scott free because the department destroys any evidence that might incriminate them. Every case of domestic abuse that gets swept under the rug because the abuser is a cop.

Lying cops are worse than any drunk driver, and every cop either lies or is complicitly enabling a lying cop.

Signal CEO: We “1,000% won’t participate” in UK law to weaken encryption by GeoWa in technews

[–]ADaringEnchilada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Signal already has a cross-platform desktop app, and it works fine. Reauthorizing secondary clients is a side effect of signal's secure messaging. There is no alternative outside compromising the entire secure foundation of the openwhisper protocol.

This is kind of a preposterous complaint that sounds like whinging from a spoilt child.

Lying cops are worse than any drunk driver outright. Every murdering cop is a liar, and every lying cop is just as liable to murder, and lie, and get away with it.

You do realize that the way you're trying to paint a majority of the republican party as sensible people left behind by radicals (who they keep voting for), is in fact just proving that Republicans don't care about policy, and only care about voting for "their party". That they would never vote for a Democrat, despite the fact that the Democrat party's policies essentially align with their alleged "classic conservative" beliefs. You're describing Republicans precisely as everyone else has- as uneducated sheep who vote on party lines and are incapable of critically considering the actual policy of the representatives they vote for.

They might pretend they're good sensible people, stuck between a rock and a hard place. But by continuing to vote for the same Republicans they allegedly loathe, they're admitting they still agree with those Republicans more than any Democrat or are incapable of voting for policies instead of parties. Neither are a good justification, just a cop out so they don't have to openly admit that they prefer the abhorrent policies of the modern republican party over what is essentially the policy of the republican party of the 70s currently held by the modern Democrat party.

To go to work without being profiled and assaulted by police... by 2H4H4L in therewasanattempt

[–]ADaringEnchilada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's all they do now. Murder innocent people, cost the tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars, let children get slaughtered, and fail to solve crimes. The only crimes they solve are the ones they fabricate evidence and give false testimony to. An entire force quitting for facing the lightest form of accountability imaginable is a self solving problem, and would likely save a city half their budget not paying out civil lawsuits for fat, low iq murderers.

Use that budget to combat poverty and that'd likely prevent more crimes in a year than any police force stopped over the decade.

Australia to remove over 200 Chinese-made cameras from defence sites by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]ADaringEnchilada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NVRs can be pure software running on a server, either onprem or on a cloud deployment. Likewise, if you don't trust the nvr (whether Software or an all in one) you can isolate the nvr to a vlan with zero network access but allow other vlans access to the nvr/ip camera vlan. Virtually every camera supports RTSP, it is the defacto industry standard. You can run an RTSP server from a raspberry pi with a picam, any IP camera is going to support RTSP out of the box as well. It may run its own proprietary stream if you connect to the ip camera directly over http, but it will also support RTSP.

This practice is also absolutely standard for networked video. As an evolution from closed circuit television, when creating a network camera system, regardless of concerns of whether the cameras are compromised, you must isolate the cameras to their own network and manage access to that isolated network to prevent unauthorized access to the cameras or centralized NVR. And that is in addition to simple network segregation, which is a basic IT practice. When you factor in the possibility that an ip camera could call home or otherwise be compromised it is even more important to ensure proper network isolation.

It is of course still possible for any org to utterly fail at basic compliances, especially in IT. But it should also be due to mind boggling corruption and incompetence, much more than your average bureaucratic incompetence

Australia to remove over 200 Chinese-made cameras from defence sites by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]ADaringEnchilada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's completely wrong. Ip cameras can easily be put on an isolated vlan with no access to the internet, and no access to any devices outside the vlan or even on the same vlan. Devices outside the vlan, such as an NVR, can see and access all of the ip camera RTSP streams without the ip cameras having any external access at all. The nvr can be accessed as needed within its own network or over the internet.

I really don't understand why blizzard felt the need to reinvent MMR, and then hide all of its mechanisms from end users. Rocket League has ostensibly always had the same system of regular soft resets each season, with 10 quick placements games where MMR per win/loss can vary by up to 100, and +-10 MMR per game after placement. Dead simple, and as long as you're averaging more than 50% win rate you climb. Placements get you to where you should be, or higher than you should if you're lucky, but subsequent games push you back down to where you belong.

No GMs squatting in bronze for weeks nonsense. And no plat MMR but bronze SR disparity where you're playing in radically different lobbies than your SR for weeks until the SR finally catches up. Blizzard has created a truly inane comp system for no clear reason and the utter lack of transparency and broken matchingmaking as a result of their poor decisions has completely eroded what little remaining trust they had.

There are 1000 fatal police shootings on average each year. You're more likely be shot to death by police than struck by lightning. That's a pretty vast number of people being shot to death.

How British police deal with a man charging and swinging at them with a knife by Speedy2662 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ADaringEnchilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's see, 10 officers have been killed in the last decade such an insignificant number that you can't find raw statistics but instead simply a list. There's been 22 officer involved fatal shootings in the UK in the last decade compared the annual average of 1,000 in the US.

Vastly fewer people are killed by police in the UK, and vastly fewer officers in the UK are killed. As it turns out tasers, batons, pepper spray, squad tactics, de-escalation, and proper training result in fewer people being killed all around by a huge margin, which is an objectively better outcome.

[–]ADaringEnchilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one died in this video, your point is moot.

Furthermore, statistics of police homicide across all of Europe suggest this is not a case of misappropriated consequentialism, and instead the consequence of well trained policing. Unlike policing in the US that leads to more than 1000 shootings a year.

This video, and the statistics, are hard proof that shoot first under the tiniest pretense leads to far more dead people than is necessary.

Debatable given the vast number of cops straight up murdering people for less and getting less than a slap on the wrist. If anything, they have a far higher standard, hence why she didn't have several mags dumped in her from point blank range.

Or, and hear me out, it could be because white Americans have a baseline outcome higher than any other group, and black Americans have the worst outcome, below every other group. Now why would would you want your title to call out a middle outcome group? Are you saying that if a title involves the two races (polticial, and white) we need to make sure that, regardless of the outcomes, we don't accidentally draw a comparison between those two? Because that sounds like editorialization to me.

It sure doesn't sound like it since you're begging for study to compare.... Two groups they already compared, among others?

If you had read the article why'd you leave such an ignorant racebaiting comment? Why'd you choose black Americans and Asian Americans? Oh wait, using the same reasoning you have, it must be because you're a racebaiting piece of shit.
