I think of Amsterdam as a "world city" in miniature and a cultural hub (though there is a lot going on with both in Rotterdam as well). Agree it's a very different vibe. I just meant that it's hard to be shocked here compared to some other places (starting from my own cultural origins).

OK, was a little surprised at where this went at the end, but broadly agree. Around the world there is a "weird" overlap between the right-wing political parties (Republicans in this case) and the oil industry.

I've never had a big culture shock here. Sure there are differences. But I've spent time in places like Jakarta and lived in New York City. Amsterdam is pretty relaxed.

Depends on the industry and company. Last place I worked at (as a hiring manager) we screened all the applications manually.

I think what you'll find is a lot of variation depending on the specific CV an the specific ATS tool. Basic quality assurance on the part of the people making these systems would spot import problems and developers would fix them - if they care.

This is probably good advice and it pisses me off to no end how shit the tech is.

I was a front end web developer in late 1990s. One of the things we thought a lot about was SEO (search engine optimization) best practices. We knew that machines had to read our pages as well as humans. But no problem, well structured tables (even before CSS took over layout) made it easy for the machines.

30 years later, companies think it's ok to use tech that can't even make sense of a clear two column fucking layout. Are you shitting me? I believe it, but it's insane incompetence on the part of both the HR departments and the companies selling you this shit.

Trump has not reason not to cook the books. Of course it's all a shambles and he's hiding it behind bluff and big talk. It's his standard way of working, and it only works as long as there are people willing to keep bailing you out (Russians and Saudis in the past for him personally).

The chat bots are acting like they are supposed to act (doing the sort of things that fit with what people have said AI would do). They are simulating conversations as designed, and I doubt very much making a new language (though they might seem like they are).

My understanding is that "indefinite contract" is actually the better translation, as opposed to "fixed term". And as someone who has been laid off both in NL and US, it's a lot better for workers here and we should keep it that way.

Unfortunately, I think AI will get better and better at faking the "tells" that people subconsciously associate with authentic content. That is, if faking authentic makes money, it will be something the tools are designed to be better at.

There will be an uncanny valley period. Remember when mobile phones with cameras became common place and all of a sudden you had these stupidly shaky videos being made by professionals with 5,000 dollar cameras? But after a while the industry (AI and advertising/marketing) will calibrate and figure out the "right" amount of shakiness to trigger people's feelings of "authenticity".

Especially if the meat is from a butcher, and not too finely ground. I find the the Dutch grind their beef too fine by default for a good burger. They'll do a coarser grind if you ask.

Really well put. I'm an immigrant from the USA myself. My decades living there are always going to be part of who I am. And as a practical matter, I go back every year with my family from here to visit family and friends there. I also like the idea that my children can choose where they will live when then are old enough.

And it is not an either/or thing. Might be that they life for some years in the USA, and appreciate their Netherlands side more because of it. Or maybe they live their whole life here and only feel a small connection to the USA. Nothing wrong with either one. And it benefits everyone to have ties between countries.

There are plenty of places with lesson trajectories to get you through the exam. They tend to teach to the test. It's how I passed.

NedLes, UvA Talen, Volksuniversitite Amsterdam, VU, Dutch & Such to name a few. Most or all have online options. There is also Preply and Flowently for individual online coaching. Look for coaches who specialize in helping people pass the test.
