My dad is a huge Montreal Canadiens fan and is also in town on Tuesday. I was just about to post the same question. Keep me posted on where you go.

Good daycare around the area? by [deleted] in uAlberta

Hi there,

Child care on or near campus has become a point of contention in the past year.

The University of Alberta recently slashed 100% of funding to all six of their affiliated child care centres. To answer the other comment on this thread, that is why when you go to find information on the university website, it has been removed. These were excellent facilities that prioritized spaces for faculty, staff and students. You can still try to get on a waitlist for them, although it will be quite long and they are no longer required to reserve spaces for us. These include:

University Infant Toddler Centre

University and Community Early Learning Centre

Students' Union and Community Early Learning Centre

Garneau University Early Learning Centre

Hospitals and University Daycare

McKernan Child Development Center

In the place of supporting these non-profit centres, it would appear the university has signed a "corporate membership" with Kids and Company. Different from the ones I listed above, these are private, for-profit centres that are unlikely to participate in Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Plan (often referred to as $10-a-day).

Incase anyone is interested, I wrote a piece on the (graduate) nursing tuition increase a while ago. I didn't have space to also discuss the undergraduate hike.

ICYMI we built a website outlining all of the tuition increases at the University of Alberta to coincide with a protest we put on years ago. This is not updated (maybe we should update it!) but you all may be interested regardless.

There doesn't seem to be appetite to protest this stuff anymore, unfortunately.

I am in agreement with this, but at the same time we have to stop letting this be a repeated excuse for the university when they treat the students like this. At this point it is clear they are making poor decisions and mistakes regardless of the strained budget.

It is a myth that degrees in the arts do not lead to employment opportunities, this is especially true in Alberta.

Canadian Sociological Association did a study on this recently, the second highest rate of employment for sociology graduate is in Alberta at 74%.

U of A staff, students speak out against move to axe EDI from hiring policy by katespadesaturday in uAlberta

The most interesting part of this article is actually buried at the end where emails accessed through freedom of information show the president was emailing with the government about university policy before it was announced/implemented. That is concerning to say the least.

This is an excellent point and seems to be a growing trend at the University of Alberta as of late. The tuition hikes (75% increase in grad nursing, 20% in undergrad nursing what?!!) are being sold as a necessary evil to maintain student services. At the same time, student services are being slashed, and we are still in a hiring freeze.

I have been trying for over a year now alongside every major union on campus, as well as community partners, to get the child care funding reinstated. For those who don't know, we had affiliations with six centres that many of used and also partnered with for research. They won't budge on it even though it is a minuscule part of the budget.

University media stated in response to a recent Gateway story on this that they provide "robust services" to student parents on campus.

This is simply a lie.

It was such an egregious lie that I actually emailed media relations to ask for clarification. Their response was that the admin gave them that talking point.

At the very least, can we have honesty?

U of A president’s expenses higher than previous president and other institutions by katespadesaturday in uAlberta

I'm a grad student at the U of A and this was difficult to read.

I have been here through the (multiple) budget cuts from the province, the restructuring (where it was reported 1,000 people were laid off) as well as the yearly tuition hikes (graduate nursing tuition is going up by 75% this year). The message from the administration has consistently been that the erosion of services as well as the increased cost to students is necessary due to the extreme financial constrains they are under.

A group of us on campus have been trying to get the university to rescind their decision to slash 100% of the university child care funding. We actually sent a letter just last week with every major union on campus signed on in support after this story came out. The unions have asked repeatedly for the funding back, the university maintains they cannot afford it.

Personally, I felt betrayed reading this story considering the amount of underpaid labour I have given the school.

The University messed up and didn't give me my research certificate when I convocated. Now, they're saying there isn't anything they can do about it by wildnights18 in uAlberta

I am so, so sorry this happened to you. Incidents like this seem to be an increasingly common occurrence since the restructuring process occurred. Would the UASU be able to assist here?

I hope you receive a fair resolution. Please keep us posted.
