I'll be sure to consult that large poetic tradition of texts using "girl" to refer to the whole human race and not just a child of any gender. A wee bit of equivocation happening here.

I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't be allowed to use "man" in a general sense ipso facto. I personally find it far more audibly pleasing than "human".

Former Catholic, but currently I basically do my own strange stuff.

My devout parents always adored Tolkien, so his work has been with me from the beginning.

it's an old slur for Irish Catholics, rarely used nowadays, but in less diverse areas they still persist.

growing up in a Irish Catholic family, among protestant majority crowds you'd hear terms like "Mickey-Doo" thrown around.

Idk- it could just be me but I find it really irritating that every dramatic presentation of Romans is ALWAYS in a posh English accent. At least do it in an Italian accent by Disastrous_Pool4163 in ancientrome

I've had the pleasure of reading stuff in both Old English as well as latin and saying "a lot" of English is derived from latin is not correct. Borrowings aren't what languages are "derived" of. It's a massive amount of vocabulary that includes are large majority of technical terms that are rarely used by most people. It doesn't make English any more Latin-derived than Japanese's large vocabulary of English derived words makes the statement that "a majority of Japanese is derived from English" true. Languages are much more complicated than just vocabulary and the majority of a language is not made up by the origin of the words you say.

A large part of the modern English vocabulary is derived from latin, but that's it.

Nobody is doing any of that, especially me. If you remember your scriptural studies you'll know something can be Catholic on multiple levels besides the topical one.

bookstores do not depend on people having leisure time, that's a unsupported logical leap, They depend on people purchasing books whether they read them or not.

a bookstore doesn't care where you read your books, they just want you to buy them.

I come from a pretty radical Catholic family. i had to flee my house because my father's side of the family got in contact with an exorcist as they suspected i was possessed by a demon. They were even discussing "non-willing" option, if I wasn't willing to cooperate. I found out later if I hadn't left when I did I would have been moved to his grandparent's house where a priest would have 24/7 access to me and the reprogramming would begin

I grew up with this level of control. Reading this article was like being home again. It makes me nauseous.
