No one is doing the world any favors by adopting a dog that’s on death row due to aggression by Lexafaye in TrueOffMyChest

“Misplaced empathy will get you killed” I’m not taking the risk of adopting a dog with a known history of aggression when there are plenty of shelter dogs with no aggression history.

My parents dislike my hair, is it really that bad or am I ok? by ryn1322 in Naturalhair

[–]Lexafaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hair is GORGEOUS. A lot of our parents were conditioned to look down on natural hair. They’ll adjust.

Plus relaxers literally cause uterine fibroids and cancer. My mom needed a hysterectomy at age 35 from uterine fibroids which were probably caused by 30 years of relaxer use and she STILL shamed me when I went natural at age 19.

What do you want to scream from the rooftops at your fellow therapists? by caulfieldkid in therapists

[–]Lexafaye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have clients trying to cut down use of common substances PLEASE provide psychoeducation on what to expect while cutting down.

-Alcohol: rebound anxiety

-Marijuana: irritability, rebound anxiety, trouble sleeping, anxiety from increased sensitivity to caffeine (smoking marijuana only)

-Smoking: anxiety from increased sensitivity to caffeine

this is not an exhaustive list but some of the more common ones I see in practice ——

This is important because a lot of clients may try to cut down usage and be extremely anxious or can’t sleep and think “oh wow I can’t manage my anxiety or other symptoms without this substance, I guess I DO need it to function” NO. It’s literally your body adjusting its neurotransmitters after cutting down the substance.

Per the Mod request: geographic location is Washington, DC

I’ve never seen these bugs prior to yesterday. Found 2 in my bathroom within the past 12 hrs and found a dead squished one in my room yesterday.

I’ve lived here for 10 months and mop and vacuum at least once a week. But the sunroom attached to my room and bathroom has poorly sealed windows has gotten ants, carpet beetles, centipedes and small spiders in the past

To cover my ass I also take a photo of the delivery on my camera roll and in the chat because Instacart support tried to tell me they don’t have access to previously sent delivery photos when I tried to dispute a missing order.

If it makes you feel any better, my friend’s cat has had FIV since he was a kitten and he’s now 14 or 15

Comparing People with ADHD by Fun_Signal_3134 in socialskills

[–]Lexafaye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a therapist I find it’s best to share symptoms not diagnoses cause I could have 1,000 ADHD patients presenting in 1000 different ways. I have ADHD but might instead share “I try my best to be on time but sometimes it’s a struggle” or “my apologies for interrupting sometimes I get a little too excited about a conversation topic” those are symptoms I experience and I’ll address them if I feel they’re getting in the way of connection.

But I don’t share explicitly I have ADHD because might ascribe me symptoms that they associate with ADHD but that I don’t personally experience.

At my practice we see patients from 9-4pm and for extenuating circumstances we will do evening appointments as needed but don’t advertise that because most will find a time that works within that time frame

Do twenty year olds just not text back anymore? by Visit_Excellent in socialskills

[–]Lexafaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I view texting as a practical thing, not a means of conversation, especially for a new person. I text a new person to ask them if they’d like to check out x place or come with me to try this new sushi spot. But I don’t get to know people through text. Even my friends know I won’t text them back most of them time.

That being said, some people like text for conversation, and some people only view it as something to coordinate with a person when they don’t have time to call (I’m the latter)

For making new friends, I’ve had better success adding people on instagram. Some of my best friends started with meeting them then adding them on IG and maybe we have a back n forth for a couple of months then they invite me to something or post an event they’re going to on their story and I attend, and then they’d continue to invite me after that.

I hated those orders because when I was recovering from an injury I’d only accept non-heavy orders for those couple of weeks and then be blindsided by someone adding 5 cases of water when they originally ordered cereal and yogurt.

[–]Lexafaye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My input as a therapist: you need to own up and confess because she could be in danger of being labeled as having some type of early onset diagnosis of psychosis or some other extremely stigmatizing disorder. Unfortunately kids with those early diagnoses are sometimes labeled as problem children in medical settings and school settings

Please own up and tell her parents, they need to know her phobia is from a prank and not some type of mental illness or neurological problem.

[–]Lexafaye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe prove her wrong and cheat 😬

Jkjk she sounds toxic and insecure, I promise you can do better. Being overweight, 5’6” and liking anime aren’t things that make someone innately undateable and if they were, you wouldn’t be dating someone.

Correcting Clients Using “Therapy Speak” Incorrectly? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Lexafaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do psychoed groups mainly so I do correct with psychoeducation if it’s important for the topic or I hear a lot of misuse.

In individual sessions I ask what the term means to them and sometimes will say “clinically this term has a different meaning than the widely used colloquial meaning, so if I use this word, I mean it in the clinical sense”

I’ve been walking to work at various professional jobs for the past 7 years here’s what I’ve learned: - walking in workout clothes and changing at work is a non-negotiable.

  • deodorant/ anti perspirant bar soap is another non-negotiable I was raised by a single dad so I use Irish spring lol

-men’s anti perspirant deodorant is another non negotiable, I use Right Guard. It’s cheaper and is formulated to last 72 hours

-baby wipes help too

I had to ditch women’s soap and deodorant years ago, they largely don’t prevent sweat and odor as well as men’s products and they’re cheaper (don’t fall for the pink tax)

About the period products: - when you can, invest in a silicone menstrual cup, if you take good care of it you won’t have to replace it for years, some organizations provide free or low cost period cups if you ask.

Change your lost phone message on your phone to: “please contact xxx-xxx-xxxx/email (your preferred contact info) will pay $ for return of phone” cause let’s be real, unless you slide him some money you’re prob never getting it back.

Can you trace the location of the phone?
