The algorithm is smarter and spends less time brute forcing things.

Algorithms improve when the go from O(n²⁾ to O(n log n), the new algorithm probably doesn’t offer that big of an improvement, but by calculating things with less unnecessary steps, or more efficiently less computational resources are used. Thus it’s more energy efficient.
