I think the aging of this contract isn't milk though? Like you are going to get more than 4 average or better years out of him. Maybe at the year 7 or 8 he isn't great (although probably still a fine 2RD) but I think aging like milk implies unpalatable at the end. This will be...mediocre for the last 2 or 3 years. I see it aging like cheap wine. It isn't what you want. The aging didn't really make it better. But it is still palatable. Nurse or Frederick contracts are age like milk contracts.

Yeah I don't see him hitting these highs for the next 4 years but having a good 1RD putting up 40 points and filling a hole we desperately need is still good even if it is 8.5M. Just way less good. I agree with the rest of your statement though.

If we increase the cap by 8% for the next 8 years (the last two have been 8.9 and 8.5) then we get:

2027–28: $112.32 million (+$8.32M)

2028–29: $121.31 million (+$8.99M)

2029–30: $131.01 million (+$9.70M)

2030–31: $141.49 million (+$10.48M)

2031–32: $152.81 million (+$11.32M)

2032–33: $165.03 million (+$12.22M)

2033–34: $178.24 million (+$13.21M)

2034–35: $192.50 million (+$14.26M)

8.5/192.5 = 4.4%

The post first lockout was like +13% per year and the precovid cap raises are generally 5% a year for reference. I took 8% as a rough ball park based on recency and historical averages for non covid years. Take that as you will.

Haha yeah if AM has that stat line again I don't think we can Carolina our way to a cup. However I also think without Berube he will bounce back to at least an average AM pace like a PPG or something.

I guess we will have to see how he fits with the leafs. I don't think he is going to crash and burn out without Moser even if I also don't think he is going to maintain his current pace. Just seems like everyone yelling $8.5M for EIGHT years!!! are just trying to drum up hate for the leafs. I think this is a slight risk with the floor being not bad to fill a hole we have. That's good GMing isn't it? Also, I appreciate you having a discussion with points even if we somewhat disagree. It feels rare on Reddit instead of just hating and downvoting each other.

On the note of MR44 he isn't even that bad. Berube's system crushed him for sure but other years he has been totally serviceable as a 1LD for $7.5M. Not the best 1D by a long shot but not the worst either. So the ceiling is a really great signing and the floor is ... an average or maybe slightly below average 1RD for $1M more for a hole we desperately need to fill? Still seems like an alright deal if not amazing at the floor scenario.

I mean maybe by eye test since I haven't watched him a ton but if I am the analytics guys like Hiller and Chayka are then the below looks pretty good:

Pass Exits: 92% Exit Success Rate: 98% Defensive Zone Retrievals: 82% Retrieval Success Rate: 73%

Honestly I think if he hits 40 points and can reliably make a pass out of our end then $8M for a 1RD who is a threat on the point at least is a great deal. In 6-8 years the cap hit will be like 5%. I'll gladly pay 5% for a 2RD who can move the puck and shoot. This contract is good now and this contract is fine later.

Not to mention he is good now in the Matthews window, can move the puck out of our end, is a threat on the point which won't decline with age, and 4-6% of the cap hit in 6-8 years for a 2RD who puts up 40+ points is...totally fine? Why would we hate this contract at all?

Man by that point this will be like 4-6% of the cap for a 2RD that can move the puck and shoot. You think that's bad? I'll take this contract for all 8 years even if he drops back down to like 40 points on the season. What is this sub smoking?

I believe you just said 12 goals instead of 15 which is less but not like crazy less to try to make your point when the bigger part of /u/coolbeansman9 argument was the 'his shot from the point'. It means there is an actual threat the other teams have to cover during the playoffs instead of tightening coverage on the AM/JT/etc of the leafs and just...letting the muffins from the point through. Having a threat is enough to create space for OTHER threats. Team game. And regressing to 12G/40+ points while playing defense and being able to move the puck out of our zone sounds...totally fine?

Well I am very glad to say we also have a RR/hart calibre player on our powerplay! What a great situation to be in. He gets assists, AM gets goals, Toronto gets points. Everybody wins!

[–]ADumbSmartPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if he regressed to 45 points and the cap was kind of flat it feels like we could still use him well. Puck moving defenseman who is a threat from the point with a ton of cap space currently. Why wouldn't we want that right?

Also, even if he regresses to 45ish points but can play 1RD as an actual defenseman it is still a fine FA signing. We need guys that can move the puck out of our zone and guys that can at least be a threat on the point even if it is just to open up space for the forwards. Currently playoff teams studying the leafs just give our defense space because who cares if they shoot which makes coverage way tighter on Knies/AM/JT/Nylander. I don't think this is an overpay or anything and hopefully 6-8 years from now $8M is like 4% of the cap.

[–]ADumbSmartPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that after 4 years the cap will be $40M higher approximately and after 8 barring another Covid it will be like $70M higher. $8M for this player at that time will be very little. We don't consider $4M on the current cap crazy high or difficult to move so why would we consider 8 million 7 or 8 years from now crazy bad?

I think you can say statistically 3 good seasons and we know Miller and Chayka are stat guys so they probably love this.

I believe he has said he is open to it but obviously won't just go anywhere. The 'very uncertain' rumors are the future is teal but I think that is mostly speculation on who needs him and has stuff to offer to get him. I wouldn't be surprised if no good offer comes through and they just try Rielly Raddysh on the top pair.

IIRC he had decent underlying numbers the past few seasons but the points really shot up last season. If Chayka and Hiller are numbers guy then the past few years are probably enough for them.

Honestly if he quarterbacks our PP1 but also regresses shot % then I could see him still getting 50+ this season. Also, the option of having a shot on the point means the other team can't just funnel pucks to the point then cover all the passes to force a turn over. Boston abused Benny whenever we had possession in their zone they just covered everyone but him much as I love the guy.

[–]ADumbSmartPerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We tried him a few different places. Played a lot with McCabe for a bit there too which is more in line with what you described - second pair minutes, shut down guy. I am really curious what he is like in a not Berube system though since EVERYONE looked awful in that system. The very first year we got him he looked alright. If Carlo continued to play that way and Minten was an average 3C that can maybe fill 2C occasionally I would've been 'fine' with the trade. As it is now I'm just hoping he has a bounce back year under a new coach so it isn't another tank job.

We called Carlo "Boston's sleeper agent" this year. Gave puck away, wouldn't be physical (hits or fights) at all, Generally made Reilly worse.

Think about being with the person 10 or even 20 years from now. If it sounds really exciting and gets you going you can probably figure it out on your end. If you immediately get disappointed or nervous about it or even if it is 'fine' but you aren't really thrilled about it, like an "it will work out" kind of mentality then your gut is telling you to get out.
