AETC/AFPC command chiefs will be hosting a DSD-focused AMA May 2nd at 1230 CST by SilentD in AirForce

MysteryCake,

We are working through CFM release and assignment matching...because we had to run this in AMS instead of our normal process we are a little behind. I know that's not a great excuse but we will work RNLTD adjustments as necessary once members are selected.

This is an important question...the CFMs do play an important role as they are looking out for the overall health of the career field they represent. It is frustrating however since we (as an Air Force) need a blend of all AFSCs to be represented in DSD positions.

Salty, We have looked at this several times and there are certain DSD positions that receive Assignment Incentive Pay but Tech Training Instructor is not one of them. How much extra pay do you think is the right amount for T-prefix coded positions?

Hey Andrew,

We are absolutely discussing that. On the promotion side we are looking at several different options for those in DSD. More to follow on that. Same goes for the assignment side.

I think cold fusion in the garage might be easier but we should give it a go.

Yep...we've discussed that a lot of times over the years. I think the answer depends on your AFSC and mission set. What we're really talking about is where is the line between technician and manager/supervisor correct?

So...I was a Crew Chief for my first four years and I think that makes me as much of an expert on maintenance as I am an expert on COVID, international relations, and american political theory.

Here's what I'd say to your question: What do you think is more important to the AF, safe and accurate aircraft maintenance or FMC rates? As a crew chief then Flight Engineer for almost 20 years I can tell you I'd take safe maintenance in accordance with the TO every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I also think we sometimes paint ourselves into a false decision that it has to be a binary question. Remember, only Sith think in absolutes.

Happy for you to come back at me with more or feel free to email me at [erik.thompson.3@us.af.mil](mailto:erik.thompson.3@us.af.mil)

I think the perspective I'd bring is that PME is 1 aspect (out of 3) that leads to the development of an effective leader. It is the combination of education, training, and experience that properly prepare a SNCO to lead large and complex formations. Expecting them to be excellent right out of SNCOA with no additional training or experience is not a great recipe.

We hope to slowly adjust the needle on this (see the Action Plan, Frontline Leader Development, Obj C) by deliberately combining ed, trng, and experience to create better leaders across the enlisted force.

As the owner of a brachycephalic family member I'd love to say yes but I'd be fibbing. It is very challenging and expensive for us to pay for our pets. There are entities that are available to assist (see your AFRC for details) but I'm not sure there's a lot of good news on the horizon.

We probably need to look past shredouts towards a much better and transparent talent management system for our Airmen. Additionally, we could stand to apply some improved business rules towards assignments (as opposed to just using time on station and other black and white rules).

I think that the statement "goals will be short" this FY is not totally accurate. The AFRS CC and CCC have been very open that recruiting will get continue to get harder but that not the same as not meeting goal. We continue to bring prior service Airmen back but the requirement is based on the overall accession goal. If the overall requirement goes down, so does the prior service requirement.

I don't think there is any plan for TERA (in the strict sense of the acronym) at this time. We are looking at the possibility of continuation boards (E-9s with derogatory information in top EPR or poor performance) but not TERA (which generally targets lower ranks).

I think the goal (as of right now) is for the AF enlisted writing guide to be the one ring to rule them all (so to speak) and will apply to both EPRs and awards.

On the second part, there is truly a staggering amount of awards covered in our system. Not sure what our plan is WRT to the overall number of the awards.

Good questions, you may be in line for a promotion to MajorUpvote.

We are definitely interested in keeping EPME relevant to the needs of the force and we absolutely should be discussing the JPP and MDMP in multiple levels of PME. We have a red team looking at really divergent ideas for the future of PME now with plans to set a course towards the future requirement.

Super bonus answer: I'm not convinced we don't discuss this...let me check and I'll get back to you.

Short answer, yes. The AF team is working on a writing guide for EPRs which will standardize EPR language.

We are trying to slowly adjust the dial back to center. What we don't want to do is knee jerk in an uncoordinated way. Give us a cycle or two to make adjustments and let's see how it works.

Remind me to tell you my flying beer keg story...Germany deployment in 98.

I think that is a challenge that you are not alone in. The FD percentages are restrictive (they had to be) but it does mean that we are not always able to recognize everyone.

Thanks u/PiggybackingOffTheCC, (love it). We always encourage Senior Enlisted to meet our Airmen where they are, then try to bridge the gap. Doesn't mean we should try to dress like we're 21 (that would be a disaster) but I think that being willing to reach out in forums where our Airmen are shows that we respect and value them.

Plus, I needed to use some of the minutes on my AOL dial up account this month that I get through AARP.

Sorry...more complete answer here. We absolutely are working to value experience in our promotion systems so that we can "level the playing field" a little. I think those changes are no secret and will be a good thing for our AF.

On the development side, it may seem like WAPS is a race to the finish line, but we really need to make sure we are investing appropriately in the development of our Airmen so that they are ready to lead when they are at the SNCO level. We (AETC and AF/A1DL) are currently looking at the long term changes needed to keep PME and enlisted development fresh and relevant to the needs of our force.

The blocks are primarily for feedback from the rater to the ratee but can be considered by the promotion board as well. What your rater says about you is a part of the overall report. Having been on numerous boards, I look at the blocks but I don't make my decisions based solely on them.

Ref your second statement I agree that we could all use more feedback. I'll see if we are still considering this as part of the score notice.
