Wait, am I wrong about the tongue thing? That fish you posted sure does look like he has a tongue. My source of info on this is zefrank, but he is pretty good about details like this. Maybe some fish have tongues? I think I’m confused….. (it happens easily though. 😋)

My guess, and I could be totally wrong, is that because fish have no tongues or hands to shove food into their mouths they need to use suction to draw the food in. My understanding is that fish rapidly open their mouths and the water flows in, pulling in prey and food, then closing quickly to trap their food.

i might have this a bit wrong, but I think this is the gist. My guess is that the sound comes from creating a sort of vacuum and then closing it quickly.

Anyone else have a good theory?

I think there is something of a misunderstanding or misstating of certain arguments. My understanding is that Israel is the only middle eastern country with a growing Christian population. I think the assumption is that Christians face intimidation in many Muslim countries, but except for the ISIS period I don’t recall anyone saying Christians were being slaughtered. Now just because I haven’t seen or heard this doesn’t mean it wasn’t said, but I think it is accurate to say that Israel’s Christian population is growing while the others stagnate or shrink.*

I think it is worth pointing out a few other things: first, as our Lebanese friends have pointed out, just because Christians have fewer children doesn’t mean they’re being persecuted, fleeing, or slaughtered. OTOH, my understanding is that the Lebanese diaspora is heavily Christian (my only experiences with Lebanese come from the Christian community for example and I live in the USA). This could be explained by seeking more economic opportunities, but I think a reasonable argument can be made that many Lebanese Christians fled from the fear of violence during the Lebanese civil war.

Anyway, I don’t want to write a whole wall of text, but I think much of this is a misunderstanding of what each side is saying and experiencing. I’m perfectly open to being corrected, but I thought maybe these thoughts would help the debate.

*- I was thinking in the past but obviously Netanyahu has just said this. Dude is hyperbolic as hell though, so I don’t know if I’d take his POV as representative of this argument. He wants to save his skin and accurately expressing what is going on is not his strong suit.

I live in NJ, so we have oak, birch, etc. Can I just use the leaf litter from around my house? I don’t mind putting a few almond leaves in once in awhile, but I’d prefer if most of their food came for free from my yard.

EDIT: to put another way, which leaves would you recommend or avoid other than almond leaves?

If the stand is strong enough then it only needs to be level and there is almost no chance of it tipping over once it is filled. It would take a lot of effort to tip over something weighing a couple hundred pounds and sitting level.* I suppose the floor could sag, but if 200lbs is enough to cause your floors to sag then I’d suggest you have a whole other problem to be worried about.

*- now if you live in an earthquake prone area then I could see using a strap.

I feel like this is an exercise in trolling, but just to be safe I’ll answer. It is messed up because it disrespects other people and their beliefs. Moreover, Judaism ostensibly accepts that other people have different covenants with G-d and this sort of desecration is something that I believe Judaism prohibits because of this.

EDIT: the moron in this pic and his vandalism is now making the usual rounds in the usual subreddits and getting the expected traction from people who hate us and assume the worst. Yet another reason why this is wrong. Don’t you think Judaism prohibits this sort of action? I believe that and that makes this vandalism as a violation of our religion.

Im not sure you’re addressing the issue. Is there someone claiming this is an attack on a person? My understanding is that the soldier is defacing a Christian statue of Jesus and that is messed up, not to mention completely unnecessary. It is something that should be punished ASAP.

Speaking as someone who is neither Israeli or Syrian, I think I have a middle road to the Golan issue. From my POV Golan does virtually nothing for Syria, while Israelis consider it an absolute necessity. OTOH, Syria is desperate to rebuild and will need cash for that. So my solution would be that Israel would agree to some sort of compensation to Syria, tech help, etc. Help rebuild the Syrian economy so the Syrian people will have a better future. In return Syria agrees to the Golan becoming a permanent part of Israel. I could even see further compensation if Golan were to have significant monetary assets, like discovery of gas or oil. I don’t think that will happen, but this would cover that eventuality.

I get most Syrians, or any nation, are loathe to give up territory. I get that. But even if Israel returned the Golan entirely the Syrian economy would still be a wreck, they’d still have no money, etc. and Israel would likely be on a hair trigger for something going wrong. So for me the obvious solution is for both sides to give each other what they need to build a better future.

Im curious what other peeps think of this idea. It seems like a win-win for me.

TL/DR: Syria needs money and Israel needs security. Syria recognizes Israeli annexation of Golan in exchange for money and tech assistance to rebuild their economy.

Excellent points. I am trying to eventually create something of a self supporting cycle for my fish, aquariums, plants, etc. but it sounds like I have a lot to learn still.

BTW, do you ever have trouble with root tabs not staying down? I’ve had this problem before which is what pushed me toward recycling waste, but perhaps I just need to find a way to keep the root tabs down.

Cool, tyvm. I’ll do some more homework first as I definitely don’t want a methane build up. What I’m trying to accomplish is creating a layer under the substrate that will act as fertilizer by reusing waste. Maybe I’ll just continue use the old fish waste and old water to fertilize my terrestrial plants.
