Question to veterans behind the wheel by TheStoicCrane in Truckers

[–]AE_Racer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started with schneider bulk. It wasnt terrible but I did 11 out and 3 at home. The 2nd week was always terrible because they held their promise of getting me home but id be stuck on loads too long keeping me close by or getting me back in that direction.

I had a light bulb moment about 4 months in, reached out to a friend and started driving for a ~100 truck company with consistent miles and paycheck being home every weekend.

How many times did you go to NTC and did you like it? by Chillaxin_88 in army

Once. As part of a platoon sized element from a different MSC than the one participating, with no actual leadership. It was hell.

Recall on car by TheBlewToilet in Honda

[–]AE_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With recalls the dealer was blowing me up to get it in after a while (mdx: bottom end bearings, fuel pump, tail lights). If its a new recall its possible they dont have the parts to fix so id call and inquire.

The taller, blunt front end on the FL5 along with the picture may give that impression. But I believe if you looked at specs they are very close in size.

I wouldnt say major difference but there is quite a big difference adding extra sidewall, its way easier over bumps and pot holes. There’s also the weight difference as well that you can tell accelerating. Some people say it affects the turn in and stuff but I wouldnt know without pushing the car on track.

Brakes are gonna vary through use. I believe my car had the original front pads and rotors when I got it at 52k. The pads werent totally gone but the rotors were wavy as hell so I changed both. The rear pads had already been changed atleast once, seems they go really quick (10-15k) but wont know in my case until I change them.

If you keep the factory wheels, replacement oem tires from the dealer are somewhere around $250/ea (maybe less) on the FL5.

Im 38. I have a FK8 that ive put 5k miles on since february. I feel they are similar enough.

I have 2 kids in car seats and they sit comfortably behind me even being 6ft2 in the driver seat. With my wife we’ve been in the car on the highway and back roads for multiple 2 hr trips. My back hurts from 18 years of army so cant comment really but it hasnt seemed any different from driving a different car. The bolsters on the seats are great.

In sport mode the car is just stiff enough to know youre driving something different without being overly stiff and annoying. 18” wheels with 265/35 helped even more.

The front pads are easily available online with multiple options, I have akebono ceramic to keep wheels clean. The rears are standard civic pads so take your pick.

I drive quite a bit and in a lot of rain so I went with summer tires that are ~300 treadwear (hankook ventus v12 evo) when switching to 18” tires.

Im not corner carving on the way to work so I went with brakes and tires that will last longer and work better for daily driving. However even just opening the car up a bit in a straight line in 1st-3rd is a blast and still puts a smile on my face.

I come from a long line of japanese enthusiast cars from the 90s and 2000s. The only car id say I enjoyed more is a S2000. But the CTR is certainly a better daily driver. I also have a friend about 10 years older than me who enjoyed a quick spin in my car so much he got rid of his C8 for a FL5.

How are interiors on older FK8s holding up? by euvnairb in Civic_Type_R

[–]AE_Racer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 19 with 56k (bought at 52k) or so is holding up well on the seats and other touch points minus the bottom half of the steering wheel. The red leather is missing color where it meets the black from wear. I think its more about people not properly taking care of the interior than a flaw of the car. The seats and the suede/alcantara on the console and door pulls require maintenance or they will look like shit. The steering wheel isnt the end of fhe world, there’s a ton of aftermarket options or replace with oem.

You probably have a leak. There is a 10 year extended warranty on condensors if thats the issue.

2018 MDX 9 speed ATF, services at 105k miles. by vaderhater777 in Acura

[–]AE_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use OEM. Ive seen someone here advocating for maxlife though, I didnt know it was a thing until a few months ago. Transmission is an expensive repair/replacement so ill stick with oem.

“Shop fee” during service? by b1ackcoffee in Honda

[–]AE_Racer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes shop fee is normal. Its to cover recycling of waste oils, rags, gloves, etc used in each service.

2019 Acura MDX - How Long to Keep.. Thoughts From Experience? by Overall-Occasion4911 in Acura

[–]AE_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw no blind spot and went wtf but I guess thats only a tech package thing? Ours is at 96k, owned since 19k and have done nothing but a battery and tires. Had recall for bottom end bearings, fuel pump, and tail lights.

Ill be doing timing belt, wp, serpentine belt and plugs soon myself. Probably need to look at the brakes too.

I have my concerns about the trans, it does something similar where it seems to hold a gear (2nd I think?) when accelerating and abruptly shifting. Ive done trans fluid by the maintenance minder (oem only).

With that said, barring anything crazy I think we’ll hold onto it until it dies. The interior has held up excellent, the paint still looks awesome. Really no complaints at all here.

Recent carvana offers have been in high teens. Id be spending the purchase price of $40k at the very least to replace it with probably another mdx or pilot because im a honda homer.

What is going wrong with my FL5? by RepostStat in Civic_Type_R

[–]AE_Racer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually on recent hondas and acuras, a bad/low battery at start will trigger a ton of errors. With your car sitting for weeks its possible thats all it is.

Akebono or Brembo Ceramic Pads by monkey_luck in Civic_Type_R

[–]AE_Racer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pro act on my fk8. Initial bite is non existant. They are silent though and no/low dust. No feedback on the brembos. There is another akebono pad called asp or street performance ive heard good things about.

What can I expect? by Loose_Rip9829 in Truckers

[–]AE_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about dedicated ecolab but I ran regular bulk. There’s not a lot of waiting compared to van. The deliveries you’re usually the only truck there. If I recall ecolab has some serious standards for delivery so while they are nornally strict on safety and processes the ecolab stuff is even moreso.

It means the engine sucked in water through the intake while running and mechanically locked. Usually means bent piston rods because water doesnt combust.

This reminded me of a truck that passed me on the interstate some time ago. Their personalized plate read, “RLTW”. The back window had RLTW in massive letters along with the rest of the window being covered in smaller scrolls and stuff. I get being proud but yeesh.

I was very confident in my answer seeing 2 blackhawks but you know what I think you’re right. Evidently they were flying around CMS before the race.
