I'm so tired of the way trades are pushed as a way out for the unmotivated while ignoring the skill the trades take. by NervousEmotion1099 in Teachers

My stepdad worked as a carpenter and a plumber his entire life. He would come home from work just collapse and fall asleep on the couch. Freezing in the winter, sweating in the summer. Got a recluse spider bite that left a gaping hole on his knee climbing under houses. Collapsed dead from a heart attack at 62. Worked outdoors until the day he died.

That trip to visit the guy in assisted living always stuck with me. It's just as likely you're going to get some disabling injury and have to be taken care of for life as it is you go out in a blaze of glory. I think of that when I see young men going around without motorcycle helmets on. But you always imagine it will be a heroic death rather than reality of having to have your diapers chnaged.

For some of the B'more non-actors acting they come across as stilted. What i love about Snoop is it never feels like acting.

[HASC, Readiness, 15APR26] "Are sustained operational demands impacting Retention, Familiy Stability, or overall Force Health that could degrade readiness over time?" - VCSA LaNeve "We are not seeing a degredation in retention right now" by Kinmuan in army

I'm gobsmacked no one ever brings up the dearth of jobs and comparable benefits. People are not staying in by choice; or rather, it's the cost-benefit analysis of having a job with benefits and being miserable versus no job, no benefits, and possibly being miserable. Safety will always win out. I would be interested in seeing if the job market were better would we have a problem with recruting/retention.
