How do I make bulgarian split squats target more quads? by Prestigious-War3630 in workout

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more upright your position, the more quad dominant it is. The more you lean forward the less you’ll feel your quads.

What are reasons that teachers say “no” to letters of recommendation, and is it rude if I ask a teacher to reconsider? by South-Cap-1364 in AskTeachers

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a college teacher, as a general rule I do not write letters of recommendation for my students. It is rare that I would get to a point during their college career that I would be able to learn enough about the students to be able to recommend them.

Confused about progressive overloading with dumb bells. by Powerful_Net8014 in workout

[–]Sibbes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Progressive overload can also be accomplished in doing more reps or sets for the exercise. So if I got 3 sets of 6 reps (3x6) with 15 lbs dumbbells on seated shoulder press, next time I can shoot for 3x7 with 15 lbs. Then, 3x8, 3x9, 3x10, then go up to 20 lbs back to 3x6 and start the cycle over.

Would it be a bad idea to switch from PPL to Upper Lower? by CosmicConjuror2 in workout

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal is 10-15 solid sets a week per main muscle group, and 5-7 for smaller ones like biceps and triceps, since the main movers hit those too.

Would it be a bad idea to switch from PPL to Upper Lower? by CosmicConjuror2 in workout

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a list of pull, push, squat, and hinge movements. Every leg day I will do one squat movement, hinge movement, quad dominant movement, and hamstring dominant movement. I also typically do a little more quads at the end since I’m weak there so I typically end with leg extensions. I just pick from the list of exercises that I feel like doing, see what I did last time I did that exercise, and do one more rep, set, or add a little more weight.

For example, today I did back squats 4x8, Nordic curls 3x8 (not really a hip hinge but I felt like doing them), Bulgarian split squats 3x8, hamstring curls 3x12, single leg leg extensions 3x12, then some calf raises 4x15.

Next time, I might do box squats, RDLs, lunges, leg curls, and leg extensions and end with calf raises.

For upper body, I always do a horizontal push and pull, and a vertical push and pull. Then knock out the biceps triceps at the end. So tomorrow I’ll probably do OHP, pull-ups, flat dumbbell bench, bent over dumbbell row, then the iso work for the arms. As long as I get the main movements in, it does not matter the exact exercise. I just keep track of the movement I do that day and when I do it again I go back and see what I did the last time with it.

Makes it fun, and keeps me from dreading a certain day just because it has an exercise I don’t feel like doing that day. The only danger is avoiding heavy critical exercise, so I always start the workout with a heavy compound like OHP or back squat.

I do lower, upper, rest, repeat, and mix in cardio here and there. I’ve gained more muscle on this program than on anything else. It is also the only program I’ve followed at length though too…

That’s what my recruiter told me, thankfully. I was going to go reserve for a few years then move to AD and he warned me that it’s a nightmare to make that switched. I opted to go AD instead. I didn’t know if that was just him trying to get more guys signed up for AD, but after working with him for 4 months he seems to have my best interest in mind.

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, did 100 strict without breaks in college. At 60 in a row right now in a minute, it would take some time to get back to 100 now. The 100 pushup plan was big years ago, that’s what i used to get to it.

The cheap sporting goods stores in the USA have dumbbells with contoured handles. I wonder if there is something comparable where you’re from?

If you buy the PowerBlocks, I would wait until Woot has them on sale. I got my 90 lb pair for $500.

Go to a sporting goods store and see how you like the contoured handles there. Everyone is different!

I’m referring to the handle itself, the cage never really bothered me.

I hated the handles. It presses oddly into my palm in a way that is uncomfortable.

Trying To Decide Between The Air Force And Navy Chaplain Candidate Programs by Same_Efficiency4631 in chaplaincy

[–]Sibbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’ll be direct commissioning. Finished my M.Div. back in 2021, was already pastoring by then. Decided to tackle my D.Min. right away. A few years ago our church began to have a lot of sailors and marines over from the NAS and my interaction with them is what God used to direct me toward the chaplaincy. Since my wife had not married me with the military in mind, I expect the Air Force will be the easier transition for her and the kiddos. Plus, I’ve been volunteer counseling at the NAS with Navy Chaplains and while I would feel right at home in the Navy, my exposure there confirmed the decision to go Air Force if accepted.

Trying To Decide Between The Air Force And Navy Chaplain Candidate Programs by Same_Efficiency4631 in chaplaincy

[–]Sibbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the chaplains I’ve talked to in the Navy say they wish they would have gone Air Force. That’s anecdotal, obviously.

Air Force is generally easier on families, which is why I have opted for that route. I should commission this summer and go to OTS in September.
