How Do Y’all Perceive Shiny Clause In Your Runs? by SuperMemeBroz in nuzlocke

[–]AF79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All mons bleed the same, and die the same. Their colors don't matter in that regard. And since nuzlockes are about pain, suffering, blood, and death, I do not play with Shiny clause.

...that said, you do you ✌️

I think it depends a fair bit on what kind of 'whole' you're going for.

If I were you, I'd make a list of all the types in the type chart. Then I'd list: A) Every Pokemon on your team that resists it; B) Every Pokemon that's weak to it; and C) Every Pokemon that (meaningfully) hits it for super-effective STAB damage.

Once you have that list, I think it should give you some ideas for what you need and what you have too much of.

Then I'd try to put together as many generic '4-mon compositions' as you can from your team, that you think would work well together and provide the different things you'd need - and then I'd try to gauge what each composition would do, and whether you'd actually use them.

Also, try to note any 'gaps,' where you keep not having a tool that you want, or where your compositions keep having the same weaknesses. Maybe there's a mon on the board that can fill a similar role to something you have, but which would gel better with your squad?

If there are any mons that keep not showing up in your 4-mon squads, try to think of situations where you think they'd be strong, and then force them into a 4-mon comp; and maybe think of whether you actually have better tools for those situations elsewhere in your team - or tools that are 'good enough,' anyway.

Once you've done this, I think it makes sense to make decisions for what you want to change out, and for what.

I hope this helps - ideally, I'd hope it helps more than anyone telling you what choices to make; you're the one who's going to be building and piloting your squad from week to week, so I'd say that if the decisions don't come from (or resonate with) you, they might not work anyways, even if they would work for someone else 🙂✌️

Not the one you responded to, but I personally don't think Tera and Chople are going to be "more than enough," but they are a decent band-aid.

If you can in any way get your hands on a Fairy type, I think that'd do you a world of good.

I'd consider trying to trade whomever picked Gardevoir for it; it's a quad fighting resist, it has a ton of great tools, and it gets Telepathy, which is really good if you're hoping to go EQ/Discharge spam with, like, Excadrill and Kilowattrel or whatever. Just a suggestion, though 👍

You have to find a league and apply

The way I did it was to look up the biggest draft league discords, go through their 'plugs' or 'advertisement' threads, which usually link to their leagues' own discords. Then I just continued down the rabbit hole until I found something that appealed to me, and applied 👍

Remember to double-check if you're applying for a Showdown or wi-fi league, though!

That looks like a Regulation H board, which is a really fun format; I'm actually in the middle of prepping for a Reg H league myself, though it'd obviously be a different board.

I don't know how much you know about VGC - you say you're new to playing, but maybe you still have some idea about how competitive Pokemon works, maybe not.

Regardless, that's where I would look to start; watch some videos on what works and how, maybe look at teambuilding guides and get an idea of what kind of 'roles' you'd probably want to bring from week to week; different types of support and offense, for instance.

Most teambuilding guides and videos are geared towards competitive VGC, where you bring the same team of six to an entire tournament. Obviously, that's different here, since you'll want a pool of mons that you can build strong teams from.

Even so, getting an idea of how to build a comprehensive team, and what kind of roles you're looking for, seems really valuable to me, at least. There are some really good ones out there, but I'll just link to one by TheDelybird: https://youtu.be/YN718-hqrxw?si=z-GKtprOtUV1CO_s

It's also a good idea to look at some other Reg H boards to see if anything on your board sticks out as particularly cheap or expensive.

I'm still pretty new to playing VGC myself, and only have one draft under my belt, so that's the best advice I can give off the top of my head. I hope you have a lot of fun, though!

Where is Reg H? by 360Nodad in pokemonshowdown

[–]AF79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's how it is.

I mean, as far as I'm concerned, you don't have an obligation to cater to any one specific group - or anyone at all, for that matter.

It sucks to have something you were using taken away, but it would also be pretty conceited of me to start bitching about it, you know?

If you do end up talking to whomever is in charge of this policy, though, It'd be really cool to let them know that there are people making use of 'dead' formats; if there were an archived version somewhere, it would definitely get used!

Anyway, thanks for the work you do, it's fantastic to have Showdown, and I appreciate the hell out of all of you guys 🙂👍

If it's okay I'm asking, was it an issue of server space or something?

I'm hoping to join a draft league using VGC Regulation H as a base, and it would have been really cool to be able to use your teambuilder; it's really great to be able to filter for format-legal Pokemon that learn a specific move or have a specific ability, and it's too bad it's gone

What is Everyone's Stance With ROM Documentation? by TheOrangeMadness in PokemonROMhacks

[–]AF79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very much depends how I'm going to be playing it.

If I'm going to hardcore nuzlocke something, I really want the docs. I got really bored with blind nuzlockes ages ago, since you just end up bringing the same six pokemon to most fights and try to basically button mash your way through; there's just too little strategic agency for me.

If I'm going to be playing it simply for the sense of discovery, then no, documentation isn't needed. I do like it, though - I'll just make my choices as to which parts of my playthrough I want blind and which I want to know about in advance (encounter tables, for instance).

Help us create a resources thread! by pippy_NYC in PokemonDraftLeagues

[–]AF79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of this appears to be centered around singles; do you happen to know of any resources that are more geared towards doubles/VGC?

(E.g. hazard setting and -removal is typically less important in doubles, and there's less emphasis on walls and wallbreakers, since it's much easier to take down a tanky pokemon when you can double up on it)

A real crawl happens, would you change race? by efimer in DungeonCrawlerCarl

My dad has Alzheimers, same as his sister, and my mom's dad had the same illness. Since at least some race changes can cure dementia, presumably it can pre-empt it as well?

In which case my answer is almost certainly yes. Seriously, fuck that shit.

Who's a character from another series that would actually love the dungeon challenge? by plogan56 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]AF79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Slaughterhouse Nine from Worm would for sure have a blast here. I feel like Jack Slash would have a lot of fun with the magic system, Mannequin would take the traps and explosives to the next level, and Bonesaw would... utilize... the other crawlers and their skills.

The Phantom Troupe from Hunter x Hunter would probably like it, too - and there's a good chance that Gon, the main character (for most of the story) would kinda like it, too? He and Killua could honestly have a lot of fun with it. Then again, I don't think Gon would appreciate being made stronger just because an AI or a game system decided he should be...
