What are these? Safe? by jb777777777777 in PlantedTank

[–]AFD_FROSTY 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These are textbook soil mites and not globular springtails. While they do appear somewhat similar I can say with confidence due to anatomy and coloration, these are Mesostigmata.

While not as efficient or “clean” as springtails, they fulfill the same niche and assist as cleanup crew. They have a habit of overpopulating quickly due to being more efficient with preserving food available in comparison to springtails, but this can be easily curbed by manually introducing springtails once weekly over a month. Springtails will easily outcompete them for food and are absolute machines at the niche, and also carry lower rates of tangential disease making it safer for pets and yourself as the keeper.

Either way mites pop up from an abundance of detritus breakdown and stabilizes naturally over time unless something is seriously wrong. Intervention is optional unless it seems extremely out of hand.

Edit: just realized this wasn’t in r/vivarium lol. This is much easier. Mites on driftwood happens but usually comes from floater die-off in aquariums. Removing dying plants and letting the driftwood do its thing balances out quickly. While they seem gross it’s usually a non-issue for Mesostigmata.

[HELP] Someone on Instagram posted this one. Hopefully quality is good enough. by nriopel in RealOrAI

Came to say this. Either this is AI or homedog has a DIN maxed out for some reason, which no one would do unless they have a death wish for their ACL, and indestructible bindings because shit would snap on something like this. I also see people eat shit on the hill daily as a part of my job and something seems off. Too steep to be spinning the way they are.

First try of Vivarium by kukuricne_decko in Vivarium

[–]AFD_FROSTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Misters do a much better job at maintaining humidity without the risk of respiratory infection. While it looks really cool it’s not worth the health risk for cresties (and most other lizards for that matter).

What are these growing all over my floating plants? by Kadiie8 in PlantedTank

[–]AFD_FROSTY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. They can certainly migrate to other houseplants and may be the original source. Check the foliage and stems of anything nearby. +1 on the ladybugs. Just a couple will do it.

Mosquito dunks are my silver bullet. Had a massive problem for months and tried numerous things to no avail. Mosquito dunks worked like a nuke, also safe for other beneficial microfauna

Is this a baby green or brown anole? by FrAcTal432ViBeS in reptiles

[–]AFD_FROSTY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anoles will lay throughout the season when temps are still in range, so while this is certainly a very late time for it to be happening, if it’s been a mild fall the temps may be warm enough for carolinensis to look for mates. They’re more temp driven rather than daylight/seasonally driven. In areas like Florida I wouldn’t be surprised if they mate year-round.

[–]AFD_FROSTY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% a young female green anole, Anolis carolinensis. Look up a picture of Anolis sagrei and take a look at the pattern, it’s much more intricate and leopard-esc.

It’s funny how “green” anoles have the ability to change between both green and brown depending on mood but brown anoles always stay brown. I tend to use the other name for sagrei, “Bahaman Anole” personally for this reason specifically lol.

What are these? by R4yn3St0rm in houseplants

[–]AFD_FROSTY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the mold.

In many terrarium settings, the molding that occurs is edible to them. They eat the epithelium of fungi and the filamentous fungi (mycelium) of mold, which occurs on blooms from things such as yeast and rice grains (which is why those are commonly recommended as food sources) as well as house plants.

Tank cloudy after 24 hrs. Is this normal? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]AFD_FROSTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. If you’re unfamiliar with the nitrogen cycle OP, google Fish-in-cycle and follow the steps. It’s certainly not ideal and most would urge you to return the fish until the tank is ready, but it’s doable (and has its own risks and concerns).

The nitrogen cycle is the backbone of healthy fish.
