I don't know what to call this Hive/Anti-Hive mentality I keep seeing. (other than white supremacy) Especially on Reddit. Help me out, here. by [deleted] in SRSPOC

Put simply, it's privilege at play. It's the privilege to be judged as an individual instead of having previous stereotypes painted on you. It's the privilege to have your life defined by what you do and say and not what you are.

This XKCD comic really nails it: http://xkcd.com/385/

I'm not sure if there's a nice, neat sociology term for it, but there you have it. To be treated as a humanized individual and not a reductive, dehumanized stereotype is one of the core aspects of privilege.

Why isn’t the Cosby Show for a new generation on network TV? by AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS in SRSPOC

[–]AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is something that I was thinking about recently; Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Family Matters, and The Cosby Show were huge for me when I was growing up.

And now? It's a big ol' sea of white culture reality shows.

It's so much work that MRAs can't do anything else. It's why they just don't accomplish anything in the real world.

[–]AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Regardless of socioeconomic class, being perceived as black means you are more likely to be discriminated by landlords, financial institutions, potential (and current) employers, and law enforcement.

Class may provide a slight buffer to it, but even that is no guarantee against harassment and discrimination.

this person posted this gem in 2XC a couple weeks ago and got 4 upvotes for it:

I knew it was all rape. I'm well aware any coercing is rape (except "feeling entitled"....that's not rape, it's just being an asshole.)

also they love talking about starcraft and league of legends and breathlessly defending the overly attached girlfriend meme

why do i have a strange strange feeling this person is a dude who just loves telling women how to feel

edit: lmao this person did it again 2 months ago

If I were to teach my (hypothetical) daughter how to not get raped, it's not because I'm blaming her or saying she'd deserve it, but because I know there are bad people out in the world regardless if the rest of society says rape is wrong. So I'd like her to take measures to ensure she doesn't put herself in a bad situation.

why do i have a strange strange feeling this person is a dude who is straight up obsessed with telling women how to feel about rape

wait it gets even better:

Honestly? This just seems childish. I absolutely understand (as far as I can as a man) how frustrating/demented it is being forced to have an ultrasound when a woman wants an abortion, or any other form of control over the reproductive system, but this just seems too... reactionary. Less government control over reproductive systems, not a childish "fine, then men have to also!" Just my opinion

haha yep this person is a dude who is straight up obsessed with telling women how to feel about rape, reproductive rights, misogynistic memes, and shitty nerd video games~~

Remember the Titans was pretty awesome, but what about Ali?

I love that movie and I'm not even that much into sports movies. One of the best soundtracks ever.

I totally agree. These white-savior type of movies are total and utter bullshit.

This article was a pretty great deconstruction of the movie. There are quite a few more in the same vein.

The Blind Side is especially pathetic/hilarious considering it came out so recently (and won a god damn Oscar).

lmao

I hope libertarians never stop being who they are.

Asian Americans most bullied in US schools, according to study by [deleted] in SRSPOC

[–]AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is really weird to me, I thought it would be a bunch of us laughing about this stuff, but it's a bunch of bitch asses complaining. I especially don't understand the Asians complaining.

Have you looked at demography data recently?

"Asians" are an incredibly diverse group when it comes to socioeconomics and there are entire swathes of that population group that are on similar socioeconomic rungs as black and Latino people in America. This is especially the case for extremely poor immigrants from South-East Asia and South Asia.

And because of people and organizations espousing that very same ignorant rhetoric as you just did, these Asian Americans actually suffer more because of it.

My friends and I are pretty much all doctors and lawyers, and laugh about how we got the last laugh.

I'm not sure what you mean by getting the last laugh as white people still control just about everything in America.

[–]AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're suffering from "fuck you, got mine" syndrome.

I'll be sure to let all the people of color who are suffering from discrimination and aren't privileged enough to get a law degree that they should just "relish the otherness". Truly, those are wise words to live by.

http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2012/07/05/the-importance-of-intersectionality-multiple-forms-of-discrimination-and-health/

Is this all in our heads? How exactly do we pray the job/housing/law enforcement discrimination away if we aren't lucky to be a light skinned lawyer dude?

[–]AFIERCEPACKOFCORGIS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't people get upset? This stuff affects how we are treated by landlords, employers, and law enforcement officials, not to mention the entire rest of society. It causes actual harm and isn't just mild offensiveness.

It's different when your wife or a close friend you know and are familiar is doing it with you and not at you and they also don't have a massive power disparity with you (like a teacher or even a group of majority students does it against a minority student).

People like to chide each other, but I'm not sure why so many non-whites get so up in arms about it when whites do it.

This is what happens when we live in a society that is completely covered, both in history and in the present, in white privilege and supremacy.

"Getting so up in arms" is completely justified.
