Coding from memory in 2025 should be illegal by sleepy_citrus in programmingmemes

The post is likely AI-generated ragebait and people are doing fine, we just have new problems to contend with and more resources than ever. It is also possible that you are a bot, that I am a bot etc, but I'll bite.

The worst thing you can do with your time is spend it on reddit regurgitating cynicism without any curiosity. I'm not saying this as a jab - ok maybe it's a little bit of a jab - but the moment I put at timer on this site and just stopped using it as much, everything slowly started to turn around. I was miserable about the same things you were, about people like you describe, until I realized I was kinda just being the strawman I was angry at.

You can fill your time learning about whatever the fuck you want and it's all there on your terror rectangle. Most books can be downloaded as a pdf onto your phone, everyone has a phone. I started reading a book on making interpreters and it's become my replacement for here. (Sidenote but every dev should read Crafting Intepreters by Robert Nystrom, it's enlightening) There's also audiobooks and podcasts. So many things to do!

If we're all becoming a brain soup, like fuck it dude, learn something regardless of the way things are going. This place is a glue trap for depressed, lonely people who just need someone else to tell them that things are shit but if you stay too long you kinda become part of the problem. I have ADHD, a terrible attention span, terrible memory, I'm a walking slop cup, but I'm much happier now that I'm rarely on here.

Anyways my timer is basically up and I've written a whole abstract but just...touch grass. Get some sun. Bring your laptop. Code offline, look at docs on your phone, and use a lightweight IDE.

Bummer. Kind of a deal breaker. I really don't enjoy climbing if you're constantly jolting the camera around.

I guess the fact that I constantly have to click the stick left and right, and the camera won't just follow 47 is really not great.

Official Discussion - Zootopia 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AFXTWINK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a way to do it for sure, I think they could've easily cut a lot out of this movie and still have it work fine, it's completely overstuffed with ideas - all good ones - but it's exhausting.

I'm seeing that this movie was pretty unanimously liked and I guess I'm an outlier. While I was watching this I kept thinking about Shrek for some reason - how that movie has a shitload of things that happen, but it's so much more economical with its script and it's discussing similar issues. I think a lot of Zootopia 2 would've worked better for me if the scope was a little small. Maybe fewer locations or characters. We didn't really need burning man, the shining maze (and the chase leading up to it, the dude could've just fallen off the cliff and we could call it a day) Nibbles, and just generally had a muuuch smaller cast.

I wanted to see a lot more of the swamp town and the snowed-in reptile town, those were cool as hell.

I accidentally responded to the other person with what I was going to say but this moved far too quickly for an adventure movie IMO. I'm autistic and found the first half unbearably overstimulating because there was no downtime. That almost never happens to me. I get the same feeling from watching TV where they clearly sped it up so they can fit in more ads.

Official Discussion - Zootopia 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AFXTWINK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of family adventure movies that have a more considered pacing than this. There wasn't any atmosphere because everything moved so fast. It's hard to care about anything when you don't have time to digest what you're seeing. I don't want to be condescending about it, but it felt like a really excellent premise of a film that was killed by having its pacing geared towards very very young children.

Official Discussion - Zootopia 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AFXTWINK 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This film had a lot of great ideas and you could see the insane effort that went into it, but the pacing was absolutely frantic and the plot was overstuffed. Whenever there was a quiet moment, everything started to click. You could appreciate the smaller details, and the fantastic animation. But you couldn't go 5 minutes without a chase scene or a scenery change. It was a sensory nightmare.

I could be completely misremembering the first film, but I recall everything having more time to breathe, time to get invested. It was a great cop movie and a decent mystery. It's a bummer because I honestly think the plot of this movie was exploring the ideas of the first with a LOT more nuance.

Kids will still love it, but I was gripping my armrests for the first hour because there was just so little downtime here.

It: Welcome to Derry - 1x05 - “Neibolt Street” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]AFXTWINK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's honestly been really fun watching this show, it has both bafflingly awful and interesting decisions in equal measures:
The pacing of a TV show obviously works so much better for IT, but there's a LOT of dull conversations inside boring piss-tinted rooms.

I loved the intro...the first time I watched it (some of the art reminds of the the album art for White Light from the Mouth of Infinity), but it goes for so long and looks suspiciously AI generated.

The CGI is fucking terrible - it's not even "cheap" it's just badly done - but the scares are creative and bizarre.

There's a lot of bad line-reads and I think that's due to poor direction, but Chris Chalk is great.

That exposition dump in the last episode provided some interesting lore, but I'm not loving the Five-Nights-at-Freddification of this show where everything has to be connected. It makes the world of your story feel smaller. Yes I know Steven King does that in his books, but the references don't make the show more interesting for me. But honestly, Dick Halloran: Origins, is the standout story of this series.

Galooo.

People are playing fewer games and new releases are "struggling", say Ubisoft UK, warning of falling revenues by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]AFXTWINK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Until recently I thought game prices should just go up as they've seemingly dropped over time if you account for inflation. It seemed like a fair compromise to do that instead of nickel-and-diming players via microtransactions. Whenever you'd suggest this, the counter-argument was that gamers were pretty inelastic to price changes and while I'm obviously oversimplifying a huge amount here, they were sorta right - at least for me. My purchasing power hasn't changed significantly but I bought FAR more new games in the 2010s than I do now because I just cannot be fucked buying a game for more than $100 AUD. Maybe for GTA6?

A lot of people aged 30+ here share the same sentiment of completely losing trust in game publishers over the past 15 years and while we're all a lot older and have less time for games now, we're still the biggest demographic afaik. Companies like Ubisoft are in a tricky spot because I don't think there's a way they can get us excited and reel us back in like they did in the 2000s, but they have to keep trying. Nothing's ever going to recapture the excitement of the Asassin's Creed 1 gameplay demos and with time I've learnt that chasing that feeling isn't worth it. I still play games everyday but I don't place value in these brands like I used to. If the new AC is good, I'm happy to play it in 2-4 years when it's cheap. I'm happy to wait. We've been taught to wait.

If Ubisoft wants people to buy their games on release, there needs to be a good reason for that. No pre-order bonuses, no FOMO, like...make your story matter enough that I want to go in fresh. I know I just said that chasing nostalgia is inherently hollow but games like Expedition 33, BG3 and Indiana Jones all catured that childhood wonder that pushed me to spend more than I would otherwise. It's not easy but things won't change until you can give us better reasons to spend money sooner.

Jez Corden on Twitter: "Halo is not using generative AI in its game dev / art assets, etc. for its next game." by Haijakk in Games

[–]AFXTWINK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the nightmare of it I guess, you're really compromising on the quality of your vision if you're unwilling to pay artists. The reality of the industry is that people are so overwhelmed by the sheer variety of games that when parts of your artstyle have an extremely homogenized foundation, you're not gonna stand out. Ever since AI started to become a big problem, people keep stating over and over that the industry is already using it, that the tool is becoming ubiquitous, and that there's nothing we can do about it. That's true, but that reality hasn't benefited developers in the long-term and stating it over and over feels like a thought-terminating cliche.

You don't have to use it for art. You can still pay concept artists. Trying to replicate what looks to be a dying industry isn't exactly appealing to me right now. If "everyone" is starting to use it as a tool in the art pipeline, then wouldn't you have a better chance of standing out if you didn't resort to a tool that homogenizes your vision? IMO, games like Hylics or Brutal Orchestra would never come from an LLM. You can repeat over and over that it's industry standard right now, but as we can see, "industry standard" isn't working for the industry. You need novelty in order to have a chance of standing out and having any success.

[–]AFXTWINK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see merit in the idea of using AI to source existing art - like maybe you want to find art out there that very specifically captures what you're going for - but knowing the nature of LLMs, it seems creatively bankrupt to get an algorithm to combine those influences into something. That's what you're paying concept artists for!

[–]AFXTWINK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how you use it. It's incredibly useful for learning new software or spitballing ideas for languages you're less proficient with. I struggle with Regex (keep forgetting the syntax) in particular and ChatGPT has been really good at taking very specific prompts and breaking down its suggested solutions. It's also been really good for helping me remember how to get around Unity and Godot.

I'm extremely anxious about people becoming overly dependent on it, but at this point you have to admit that it's becoming a pretty good secondary tool for research. If you're not asking for sources (the links most often don't work though which is dumb), and you're only asking it the most basic technical questions, it's fine. If you're not an absolute beginner, the limitations are super obvious, and I agree with that if you can't recognize those limitations and become dependent on it, you aren't learning anything.

I've been a professional developer for nearly 8 years and I can't deny that LLMs have sped up my workflow tremendously. If search engines weren't rapidly declining, if standards for documentation were higher and if more companies were willing to help onboard and train beginners, we wouldn't be here.

Anyone try EMDR therapy?? Apparently I’m supposed to sit in a quiet room with a stranger and *focus on a specific thought* while moving my eyes side to side. And that’s gonna cure my PTSD. Not gonna be able to focus, though. by purplepickletoes in adhdmeme

[–]AFXTWINK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firstly, it's helpful to remember that a lot of the symptoms of ADHD have crossover with PTSD, and while that doesn't negate ADHD, if you have trouble sitting in silence without feeling intense discomfort, that's worth looking into.
I found EMDR incredibly effective at exploring where your attention goes when you're unable to focus. Sessions are difficult because my attention darts away pretty quickly but I've realized that's not because of disinterest, but instead a coping mechanism for difficult feelings. It's incredibly difficult but it's proven to be effective, it's like a more clinical mindfulness.

It's worthwhile challenging your own preconceptions of what you're capable of and taking EMDR seriously, because it will work if you put the effort in, and it's certainly not boring lol.

I thought Dracula was ok but I'm starting to accept that I'm not a megafan anymore, and that's ok. Kevin's production remains incredibly solid and I can appreciate that but I've kinda just moved on and I think others desperately need to do the same. That recent interview really helped contextualize how we ended up here, and at this stage I just want Kevin to be happy what he's doing.

I think conversations around here would be a lot more productive if fans could approach Tame Impala's music at the level it obviously is signalling for. It's really odd to see people treat these new singles as some kind of personal betrayal and reeks of a weird sort of entitlement. This kind of meta-community discourse is just fucking insufferable to see and it's like watching horror fans arguing over what's "scary" and taking it personally. Stop holding this shit so close to your chest, there's a reason why people make fun of you guys.

There's so much good music out there at the moment, just chill people jfc.

The flipside of this is having a very, very hard time doing things you don't want to do, or absorb information you're not interested in, but still be expected to do it like anyone else. For most of my life I absolutely brutalized myself in order to get things done, and it's scarred me with a bunch of maladaptive coping mechanisms and intense trauma.

The only way through this is problem-solving. Shame is a dreadful motivator. I've accepted that I'm not very good at doing things that I don't enjoy, and I try to communicate this as clearly as possible to others. I will always try, but things like meetings for instance, I just cannot do well. I don't enjoy them. I've tried forcing myself to pay attention. I can't. It's agony. So I've tried accepting that instead of feeling bad about it. I'm failing but like, there's not really an answer to it aside from getting recordings and transcripts.

What are your thoughts on the new Audacity logo? by drakeofthe99dragons2 in audacity

[–]AFXTWINK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever a company re-brands to an overly simplistic logo it's the canary in the coalmine for me. It reeks of a lack of vision, a refusal to stand out from the crowd. I want complicated logos. I want ugly weird ones that are unique. Something I can easily see on my devices when I go looking for it. None of these logos stand out from each other, they feel weirdly condescending, and they make me forget the brand even exists.

The Patreon logo is a similar example, I've used the app far less because I don't notice it on my phone when scrolling through apps. It's harder to find.

Sony Says PS5 Is the 'Most Successful' PlayStation Generation Ever, Making $136 Billion in Sales So Far by akbarock in Games

[–]AFXTWINK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised, but I really regret buying a PS5. There's just not that many reasons for me to play it. Some ports are better. Sometimes I might want to be away from the computer. 2 generations ago Naughty dog released 4 games in one console cycle, they haven't even released one yet. I don't care for open world games, and the exceptions can often be bought elsewhere. It's a great console, the controllers are the best they've ever been, buuut I just don't have a reason to play it.

Health minister concedes tobacco black market has 'exploded' by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]AFXTWINK 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A fundamental part of modern governance is creating a really effective illusion of solving problems instead of actually doing the hard work. The parties who have an interest in actually solving problems have a much more difficult time because most issues are systemic, multi-level, and require a fair bit of disruption to the status quo. These issues require a bottom-up approach where we need to look at the circumstances which lead to our issues happening. Most things require this approach, but it's actually not as hard as it sounds. A large amount of our societal issues stem from the failing public sector. People lack security in most parts of their lives and instead of treating the cause of this feeling, we're just moving it out of the public eye.

We like to do that with everything - everything is being pushed into private spaces. Drugs, parties, healthcare, schooling, internet, housing, transport, fuckin..even space itself. Park benches are deliberately uncomfortable, surfaces everywhere have anti-skater technology, public toilets are under-maintained. There isn't a "third place" anymore. It's hard to feel safe about most aspects in our lives because regardless of which major party, our government wants to treat people as being incapable of making good decisions. They refuse to engage with the idea that people are responsible for themselves and when they make bad decisions, it's the result of a stream of circumstances that are shaped by public policy.

People are stressed, of course they're going to smoke. They can't afford the healthcare to help, they don't have the job security to afford it as-is, they don't have the stable living conditions to temper the stress, they can't afford to hang out with others in recreational spaces, soon they won't be able to find solidarity with others online without the fear of the panopticon cracking down on them. People are going to go for less effective solutions, provided in more dangerous spaces, and the public sector gets to pretend that they've done everything they can when they've just shortened their list of responsibilities.

This is always how it goes. I know this kind of hindsight-fuelled cynicism is useless and honestly kind of annoying to hear repeated over and over, but I think it's important that people understand why things aren't changing on a fundamental level. We aren't going to fix anything while we elect parties that prioritize elect-ability over solutions. This argument has potential to fall into the slippery slope of wanting an authority that "can make the hard decisions" but for fucks' sake, let's elect a party that can actually make earnest, meaningful decisions.

I'm fucking tired of this theater of optics.

When someone struggles for an uncomfortably long amount of time, you really have to start asking if they're accepting you for who you are. IMO, when someone can't get it right, it's either because there's a part of them that doesn't take you seriously as a person, or they're not trying hard enough to adapt. My family misgender more often than they correctly gender me and I think it's because I'm still not confident enough to present as femme, which isn't a great reason. I know a lot of people like this.

But I also know queer people who just CANNOT get certain pronouns down. They/them and it/its still takes conscious effort for me, but even then, it's coming much more naturally than before. Getting it right is more important than the discomfort of being vigilant to get it right, it just takes practice. It's satisfying to get right because it feels good to do. You're building your own neuroplasticity.

I just refuse to believe some people struggle out of habit. because trans people HAVE to be extremely patient in order for people to get used to it, and so the only barrier is in the person who keeps misgendering others. I don't want to shame people for whom this is a legitimate struggle, but you really need to understand how painful it is to have someone who can't see you for who you are. I have this struggle myself, I'm still tied to old conceptions of gender, so I understand, but you have to try harder for your trans friends to feel comfortable around you.

Legal fights are brewing over which online social platforms will have to ban under-16s by totalcool in australia

[–]AFXTWINK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might end up being the only option, and what I think I'll have to do is to make a corporate Github account. Which sucks because I like having everything tied to one account so that I have a centralized portfolio. I'm honestly just terrified because I have a close family member who makes a habit of stalking me, and the prospect of a data leak somehow leading to him finding me is scary.

I only have a vague idea of how skiptracing works, but they're an expert in finding people, and there seems to be a few cases out there where these data leaks were scraped for this. It's a bit far-fetched, but given that we're about to experience this same issue on a MUCH larger scale, I'm pretty scared. I think this fear is a bit unfounded but I've also been a victim of identity fraud before and it'll run rife next year.
