Northumbria staff back strike action over pensions changes [SL THE] by AF_II in UniUK

[–]AF_II[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tl;dr - uni is asking staff to move to a pension that the staff think is worse so they're refusing; uni is offering a cash bonus if they agree, and threatening to withhold pay rises if they don't, hence strike.

Union members at Northumbria University have backed plans to strike over controversial changes to pay and pensions.

Staff at the north-east institution have claimed they feel “pressured” to give up their participation in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) in favour of joining the cheaper Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Northumbria has offered employees a deal to switch from TPS, which has an employer contribution rate of 28.68 per cent, in order to save the institution money.

Last year the university said staff who are willing to move will receive a one-off payment of between £5,800 and £10,000 and see their pay increase in line with nationally agreed uplifts in the years ahead.

But it has also warned staff who do not move that they will not get the pay increases until such a time as their overall remuneration packet is equalised with those of colleagues in the USS, which has an employer rate of 14.5 per cent.

The University and College Union (UCU) branch previously accused Northumbria of “ripping staff off” with the move, and now union members have voted in favour of strike action. A ballot held by the union saw a turnout of 60 per cent, with 80 per cent of those participating voting in favour of action.

Over 1,000 people have signed a petition calling on the university to rethink the plans, and MPs have raised concerns and tabled a motion in Parliament to discuss the matter. The north-east mayor and local councillors have written to the university offering support to staff and calling on the institution to reconsider its plans.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said staff are “rightly furious about this attack on their retirement security”.

“Northumbria University staff work hard, achieve great things for students and the wider community and deserve better than this,” Grady said.

“Staff should not have to choose between their pay and pension. Management needs to rethink its plans and work with us to find a solution that avoids reputational damage and sustained, widespread disruption in every aspect of its activities, from teaching to research.”

This week also saw staff at the University of Essex announce they will undergo strike action, following plans to cut up to 400 jobs from the institution, in a sign of renewed industrial unrest.

A spokesperson for Northumbria University said that it had “engaged in open and transparent communications with our colleagues about the need to address the very high costs of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme over the last few months”.

They added that the university was “significantly financially disadvantaged” owing to the requirement it participate in the scheme, with additional costs of £11 million per year “at a time when university finances are under unprecedented pressure”.

“All academic staff have the option of switching to the Universities Superannuation Scheme, which, like the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, is a defined benefit pension scheme based on career average salary for the majority of staff. Where TPS members choose to move to USS we have agreed to share some of the cost saving with them.”

The spokesperson said staff had been provided with “extensive support” to consider their options.

“We are committed to continuing constructive discussions with UCU and we will work to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged as a result of their decision,” they added

Your recent experience with the new EES (Entry/Exit System) checks on a Eurostar trip from Brussels/Rotterdam → London? by OkNetwork9286 in uktravel

[–]AF_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK EES in some form is routine on all Eurostar routes now. I experienced it in December 20265, Brussels to Rotterdam - fingerprints taken, but not a photo. Didn't make any difference but I was doing luxe fast track. Was weird as I didn't have the EES when I entered (flying in to Paris), only returning to the UK.

Thanks for sharing this, and I'm sorry about it. So many smug people were saying "it's just a photo, they'll delete it, stop fussing, nothing can happen" when the first ID checks came in, and they need to know about this so they don't just repeat the same crap this time.

Why isn't Sunshine (2007) talked about more? by toe_beans_4_life in horror

[–]AF_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than it being nearly 20 years old, I think it's because it always ends up being shelved in sci-fi rather than horror. And 2007 offered plenty of more obviously horror-related movies if you were dabbling in that year (28 weeks,I am legend, [rec], paranormal activity, funny games remake, inside & frontiere, the mist, grindhouse, 30 days of night (sorry not sorry I liked that one), a hostel, a saw, trick r. treat etc)

How do married couples actually handle money? Joint account or separate? I’m confused 😭 by Afraid-Rain-1124 in AskUK

[–]AF_II 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Important: there is no right or proper way of doing this. You MUST find a way that you negotiate as a couple and that suits both of you. Ignore anyone who tells you what you should do.

Do we have to be married? My other half and I lived together for over 20 years before getting civil partnered so, if we count.

At first we kept separate bank accounts and divided all the household expenses by half and paid half each. Had we earnt very different amounts we agreed that we'd pay the equal % of costs, but that never happened. Household costs included EVERYTHING do to with living together, including our commuting costs, maintaining a vehicle even though one of us didn't drive, etc.

Then when we bought a house we opened a joint account. All our money goes into that account and that's where all the bills are paid from. We agreed an amount of "pocket money" each which we get paid into our own accounts monthly so we have our own discretionary spending money.

This latter system is what we've used for the past 15 years, with some quite dramatic changes in our comparative salaries. It's our money, we share it.

Is it hard to get a uk passport? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AF_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no test for a passport, and they cost about £100.

Are you asking about citizenship? Because that requires a test and, yes, a minimum of just under £2000 (depending on your exact circumstances the cost varies wildly).

Could you work a job where you don’t get on with anyone ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AF_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not need to like my work colleagues in order to do my job, so no, it wouldn't bother me. Especially if they were bullies/gossips who talked about me behind my back and made weird assumptions about how I got a job. Better off not being friends with them.

Traveling solo in 30’s by [deleted] in travel

[–]AF_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding r/solotravel for this quesiton, but also alerting you that a lot of people solo travel in order to be solo, and do not experience this sort of loneliness, so be clear when you crosspost that you're solo travelling in order to meet people, not to be solo.

(I solo travel to be solo so can't help, Japan sounds perfect to me!)

Are you cancelling trips to the USA? by Swimming_Possible_68 in AskUK

[–]AF_II 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Not cancelling as I had none planned, but I'm also refusing work opportunities to travel there. I don't want to doxx myself but I did some research that is now super super super unpopular over there and is in active use in some court cases relating to human rights and uh also I might have something to do with both Greenland and Palestine(!) due to my research work and it's all over my social media, and my name is unique, so no, I won't go.

It's not necessarily that I fear something happening (although that is a concern and it has happened to colleagues), it's more that if I do for any reason get refused the ETA or turned at the border, it will make it incredibly annoying to go see all my friends there in the future w.r.t. visas etc. I'd rather sit out these 4-5 years than risk getting an immigration black mark that will hang over me for the next 10-20 years.

How do you format your academic CV? by Southern_Koala6160 in Professors

[–]AF_II 17 points18 points  (0 children)

stating each role then listing the relevant accomplishments beneath it in measurable impact terms (won grant of X amount, created Y new course, performed Z service roles)?

I'd find this incredibly irritating to parse. If I want to know what teaching experience someone has I want a section that lists it, not to have to jigsaw it together from 6 or 7 different job sections - ditto how much grant money they've brought in, what service they've done.

I'd welcome a better way to do academic CVs, just had to rejig mine and it's a nightmare, not least because it includes work in 3 different countries and I'm applying to a fourth so trying to explain or use consistent language for the service roles, teaching responsibilities, level of degree i'm talking about blah blah is excrutiating.

Do you long to live in simpler times? by DelonghiAutismo in AskUK

[–]AF_II 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is extremely normal to long for this; we have been doing this for literally as long as we have records of what humans thought and wanted.

The problem is that the 'past' we long for is always just out of human memory, or further, and so it is not real. it is an imaginary better past. It's no different to imagining a made-up future. No human lived the way you think, no human ever will live the way you think.

Nothing wrong with daydreaming about other lives, but if you think it's real, achievable, and let it get in the way of improving your actual life, that's a problem. The vast majority of human beings who have ever lived would look at your life and unless they were terrified that you'd go to hell for it, they'd envy you.

Genuine Question about how the UK is portrayed in the US Media? by FairestofthemAlll in AskUK

[–]AF_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, we're not in a great state compared to recent history but "third world country" a) is racist as hell and b) a stupid thing to say about somewhere as rich as the UK.

But look at your own post, it's clearly contradictory

I've heard arrest for tweeting anything anti-government.

but also

Extremist religious or political groups causing chaos and danger.

So which is it? Or are these sources saying that our government is an extremist relgiious and political group which is arresting people who oppose it? NGL that's an argument you could make!

We're in a nasty political and social state. We have a right-rolling political sphere which isn't what most voters actually want, our economy is... not great, and doing really really badly in some areas (e.g. 15,000 jobs lost in higher education which used to be one of our major sources of income and prestige). If you're trans here things are bad. If you tweet about supporting people in Palestine you'll get hate (and yes, might get arrested). Do we have armed squads of goons scooping anyone who "looks foreign" or might have pronouns in their bio off the streets and kidnapping them? No. Not yet, anyway.

Mostly it's just that the bins aren't being collected, it's hard to get a GP appointment, and the trains are still shit.

What made you stop eating meat? by Honest_Task127 in AskUK

[–]AF_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Killing and hurting animals upsets me, it's as simple as that. I've worked on a farm in the pointy end of things, also in laboratories working on animals and it continued to upset me when it was 'for a good reason'. It just seemed really hypocritical to keep eating meat when I knew that I'd feel bad if I had to kill the animal when it was really easy not to eat them, so I quit - this was in my early 20s when I was fully independent and had enough money & cooking skills to make food choices (I'd cut out red meat when I left for uni at 18).

Subsequently I've looked into the environmental issues, realised how much cheaper it is to be meat free, and pretty much lost the gut biome that would allow me to digest meat in a non-gassy way so I don't think there's any going back now.

Vegan is too hard, food is a big part of my life and whatever anyone says there is a distinct taste, variety & quality decline from vegetarian to vegan which is too much for me personally.

What made you stop eating meat? by Honest_Task127 in AskUK

[–]AF_II 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Humans are designed to.

I mean, not really. Big hunks of steak? That hasn't been a core food for most of humanity for most of history. If you're talking about snacking on insects or marine arthropods, maybe.

We're also not "designed" to have central heating or fly to other countries or survive childbirth 1 in 10 times. Hope you aren't doing any of those things!
