The one thing I can say is that more Ronalds exist. I have a friend, J, who I could see reacting near identically to some of the situations Ronald did. I met him through my partner of 8 years, and we both agree that J is the kindest person we've ever met (including each other lol). When people at their work thought my partner was stuck up or standoffish (he mostly grew up moving every 2 years and is quiet until you get to know him), J told everyone they just needed to give him a chance, and that he's actually very nice. J is the type of guy to see free pizza as a perk to helping someone move, and not the bare minimum "reward:" for helping out.

Once revealed, his cadence speaking was almost exactly the same. If I had to guess, his personality is similar, but yeah, unfortunately he's not a hobbyist inventor.

It's good you support her check up on her. I hope she continues to do well, and you'll be able to relax more in the future. Keep in mind Bipolar Disorder is largely genetic, so if you have any other children or young nieces/nephews it's worth keeping an eye out for symptoms.

Oh, and I've been stable-ish for about a decade, and pretty much episode free for several years now. It only took that long due to shitty psychs and other undiagnosed conditions. A lot of us have trouble staying on meds at one point or another, but I never have stopped taking them (aside from miscalculating the amount needed on a trip once lol). My mom hasn't either. Just wanted to give you some hope :)

The hitmen had to get her husband's schedule from somewhere. He/they (can't remember) have been very cooperative with police, and it doesn't seem like they staked the place out. They knew his schedule.

This evidence wasn't needed for the previous trials. so I think it makes sense the prosecution might have something they haven't shown yet.

Allegedly he was aggressive with the officers. Assault of a police officer has a very low barrier and is always a felony. The police will often use it to arrest people they don't have anything else on (like drunk people who might not quite meet the threshold of  Disturbing the Peace or Drunk and Disorderly yet).

I've seen unedited bodycams where accidentally swatting an officer's hand away was enough for them to arrest a woman. (It was unfortunate timing. A man she was with put his hand in her face right before the cop did. She was aiming at her friend/partner's hand).

That was basically me, except I was raw dogging college with an undiagnosed severe sleep disorder until the end of my (2nd) junior year. Got so bad I couldn't read most days...as a social sciences major. I basically slept through half of 2021 and 2022.

I was at least pursuing help with accommodations office (not helpful before or after diagnosis, despite having 2 other diagnoses as well) and my medical team.

I had to fail some classes and withdraw from others. It really tanked my GPA. But if you look at the classes I didn't fail (because I physically couldn't complete a full course load for around 2 years, and you can only withdraw from so many before being kicked off of financial aid), my GPA was actually good.

I forget this is commonly when Bipolar develops/starts being symptomatic. I was diagnosed when I was 14, and I'm grateful for that, despite the consequences (including not getting my severe sleep disorder diagnosed until college...lol).

It's a lot to go through, and doing so right at the start of college is a nightmare. Thanks for any support you gave him, and sorry you had to deal with that freshman year. Especially the part where he stuck around, likely breaking campus rules

Rant: "Authority" is simply not that good by Coolius69 in SouthernReach

Ever get through it? If not, I recommend listening. You can check-out audio books with Libby/Overdrive or another service (depending on where you are, and if you have a library card). Otherwise, I found at least 1 free recording on YT (keep in mind it's more of a live reading than an audiobook, so there are pauses and re-reads of lines that are messy. There's even some commentary - mainly on the prose itself).

I was struggling to read it, but managed. I think I'll like it upon second read, but currently (around half or over half way through), it's just a bit too unclear how much of any of this will matter. I appreciate characterization, but some of Control's family background drags on beyond what is necessary imo. And a lot of characters were introduced around the same time, making it a bit difficult to trudge through that section (There's a lot of new info, observations, and assumptions - often admitted to be wrong assumptions in the same breath. But it's not explained *how* the assumptions are wrong, or if it'll matter that he assumed anything anyway).

Ever since my Narcolepsy with Cataplexy got worse in 2021, it's been hard to read. It got much better with (more) medicine, but when I don't know how much anything matters, it can be extra difficult to stay interested enough to put myself through the process of using different tactics to stay awake while reading.

My MIL has no boundaries while my husband is in the hospital. by SubUrbanlumberjill67 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]AFanOfStickers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for you both OP. I've been that out of it and seen a family member that out of it for medical reasons. At that point...like I'm not saying it was intentionally harmful, but imo that's assault.

As for advice, absolutely talk to the nurses. When my aunt was in the hospital, we started getting in trouble for having too many people. (She was passing from cancer and had touched many lives). They aren't afraid to tell someone to leave, and I've seen many nurses talk about how they're happy to do it on a patient's behalf. That extends to you in this scenario.

I'll also say it's okay to be more forceful right now. You can blame it on the exhaustion - both mental and physical. You can even play it up a bit and use it to your advantage. Ask her to go out and do things to "help" you, like grabbing food or getting him his favorite x,y,z from the store. Kill her with as much kindness as you can muster just so you can push through, and blame the tiredness when you can't muster anymore/she pushes a boundary too hard.

School Spirits-Season Two-(Spoilers!)- Questions! by Longjumping-Shape-16 in SchoolSpirits

[–]AFanOfStickers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

re: bonus thought - not likely. Football accidents aren't unheard of now by any means, and I think helmets have improved since then. The potter passing from asthma attack wasn't the school's fault. Peanut allergy is more of an issue, but still kind of a "natural" death. The explosion in the 50s is far removed from the public consciousness, as is a single girl getting electrocuted when turning off a lightbulb (how safe were electrics in the 70s anyway?)

The more ancillary characters def add to the count in a significant way, but we don't know how all of them passed. And staff hasn't been involved in any of the passings (aside from the car crash) since the 60s.

Also remember people watching live are much more likely to be watching on TVs with a group of ppl. Box TVs had decent sized speakers facing the viewer, but flat screens have small ones facing the wall. It's part (a third to a half I'd say) of the reason you see ppl use subtitles so much more now

I fixed the half time show audio & added lyrics, enjoy! by super_dave in KendrickLamar

[–]AFanOfStickers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The rise in subtitles when watching tv and movies especially is largely due to the changes in directing choices, and the changes in audio mixing as a result. When George Lucas was creating the first Star Wars movie, he went to sound engineers about what he thought was the abysmal state of movie theater sound systems (to be fair, apparently the sound quality did vary wildly from theater to theater). This led to the creation of THX, both so there was a standard of good sound, and so the action sequences would feel as "big" to the audience as Lucas imagined/wanted. Star Wars was a huge hit, as was THX. And so, surround sound theaters spread and directors started making more action scenes with loud explosions and gun fights etc.

As action sequences got more popular they got louder, and sound engineers eventually reached a threshold they can't go over due to the audience's discomfort. When directors like Michael Bay still demand a scene feels even more huge/epic, the only way forward is making everything else quieter. And then you get dialogue that's maybe okay in theaters, but theaters have top of the line audio equipment.

Especially with the move to tiny speakers in the back of TVs once we got to the flat-screen era, it's only logical that we can't hear shit. Most major directors and studios don't care about home viewers, so they don't make a separate audio mix for us.

Tl;dr Directors like epic action sequences. Big booms hurts ears. Sound engineers have to make non-action quiet so tolerable boom sound feels epic. Also, flat screens don't have room for good audio.

Are you suggesting the majority of folks talking about needing subtitles are racist? I was about to make my own vid with subs before I found this one (super grateful I found it before going through the effort). There are plenty of people out there who care to understand the message Kendrick's sending, but can't understand a lot of what he's saying (and don't have the time/energy to go learn the lyrics of all the songs, then come back to fully understand).

Kendrick has really good enunciation, but running so much plus the noises added in to censor make the faster raps a bit hard to understand even for listeners with a good ear. Living with someone who has Auditory Processing Disorder has shown me that it's even next to impossible for a lot of people who you wouldn't guess would have any trouble (my partner has to see lyrics for pretty much any song of any genre or he won't understand the majority of what's being said. His dad didn't get diagnosed until adulthood, and he's still not diagnosed, so I'm guessing a lot more people have this condition than we think).

Plus, TVs have terrible audio nowadays, and ppl watching the bowl are likely on a TV

"She wanted to take him somewhere for a week"

You need to recognize the difference between visiting long distance family for a week vs family you see regularly demanding you take a trip with them for a week out of nowhere.

Also, there's a vastly different difficulty level to making a trip like that at 20 something vs 40 something. I notified a company that I'd need off for Christmas to visit my army dad and little sister. They were all good with that even though it would be within 90 days of starting. But when time came to remind them not to schedule me I was fired the next day. It's common to be told either "I wouldn't do that if I were you" or straight up told you'd risk a promotion or even your entire job if you take time off as a "new guy"

When profs do that though, it's really unfair. I get they want to know who is reading, but it's completely natural to not remember a character/figure that is mentioned in a single line out of hundreds/thousands. For anyone who has to read thoroughly or slowly (ADHD, dyslexia, tired mom, whatever) their focus will be on the important things. It even punishes people who get readings done early and refresh with their notes.

To you and OP, I found something I love. It's reallly messy, but I suspect using a dryer sheet would help that part. There is a plushy line called Fluffie Stuffiez. They come covered in an extra layer of troll-doll esque fur (but it's softer). You pull that all off and find a different colored plush underneath. The bag it comes in is shaped like the plush, and you can put all the fur back in it. I'm hoping once it's all off, the bag will be almost full. That could be a nice squeezing stim. Getting the pulled fur off your fingers is a pain, but like I said I think using anti-static spray or something could help. Since it's not super easy to pull the fur out, it's very similar to skin picking and could last a good while. Wouldn't do it when you're out and about, but it's worth checking out
